Recently I was unlucky enough to hear all 2 minutes and 43 seconds of I'm A Believer by Neil Diamond. It sounded absolute pants compared to The Monkees 1966 version which has stood the test of time. I thought to myself, This is to music what Fifty Shades of Porn is to literature. (Good music to me would be Sail On by Electric Mary. Stuff like that.)

But it turns out The Monkees' I'm A Believer is a version of the song written by Diamond and first released by him the following year. So I'd jumped to the wrong conclusion and assumed his version was a rubbish cover of The Monkee's original. (Give it a listen. It's dire by comparison.) The Monkees didn't play any instruments on the single produced by Jeff Barry which sold over a million copies before it was even released. It went to number 1 on Christmas Day and stayed there until February.

Anyway, do you have a favourite cover version you think beats the original? Maybe it sometimes depends which version we hear first.

Although I was in my teens when I first heard Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower, it was a couple of years before heard the original ... Jimi's is tons better

Have we not done this one recently?
I think that those who regularly contribute to the music threads, simply put the same tunes up regardless of the subject :D

I prefer Gun's version of "Word Up" to Cameo's (presumed) original. Ditto with Metallica's The Ecstasy of Gold. Maybe Metallica's Whiskey in the Jar, too

I prefer this version of the thread, rather than the older one :coat:

Aretha doing a cover of Dusty Springfields 'Son of a Preacher Man'. It's arguable which is the better version as they are both great.

Does a different version from the original artist count? If so, heres a ska version of Israelites by Desmond Dekker.

And heres a cover of a 1920's song (Just a Gigolo) that is outstanding! You may recognise the voice if not the name.

And for some comedy value, Vladimir Putin singing Blueberry Hill

And to cleanse your ears after that, here's the Fats version:-

Whitesnake - Ain't No Love in The Heart of The City

That remains me of this. I'm sure I've posted it before, but it is outstanding.

Carlos Santana's version of Black Magic Woman - here it is with both him and Peter Green:

Rosalee

I never ever want to hear a cover version of Brown Eyed Girl... or the original... or ever play it.

Steve.

Somebody I used to know...

2Cellos - Thunderstruck
Blue Man Group - Baba O'Reilly

How come, Steve? Personally, it would have suited me fine if Van had been given away to the circus as an infant, but I'm guessing that's not your reason. :)

Johnny Cash cover of NIN Hurt

30 Seconds to Mars cover of Kanye Wests Stronger

And for Farmers daughter up beat version
And one more true to dusty

1. I hate it.
2. People are always requesting it.

There isn't enough money in the world to make me play it (but you can test that theory if you like!).

Steve.

Gary Numan, On Broadway.
Hell yeah I agree there but if I remember correctly wasn't this only released on Living Ornaments?

However, imho this is a total disgrace, it's ONLY a song Numan could sing ffs!

Last night as I went to make a cuppa my house mate was watching the voice, I was horrified to hear some girl totally ruin a cover version of Foo Fighters - The best of you.
I'm the complete opposite and generally don't like cover versions of songs but there is the odd exception, this version of 'keep rocking in the world by Simple Minds' version totally blows Neil Youngs version out of the water.

Somebody I used to know...

Wow! That really is an awesome cover version, they remind me of 'band in a van' who also do some great covers as well.

Having said I am not generally a fan of cover versions I am going end up contradicting myself because I now keep remember a few good ones.

I'm not generally fan of this band but I think it's another that is better than the original, not that I will take anything away from The Who.

Venus by Bananarama, definitely better than the original.

I quite like this guy.......possibly not everyone's cup of tea........
