Good choices?

Yes
At present, I don't actually 'own' a camera and lens, I use the office equipment at weekends when I can. This consists of a Canon 30d and a Canon 70-200 L f4 lens.
I'm looking into maybe buying some equipment of my own and think I've narrowed down what I want, but would appreciate feedback about my choices.
I mainly shoot football matches and was thinking about a Canon 7d as regards the lens I'm a little unsure. I think a Canon 70-200 L 2.8 (non IS) would be a good choice. But is it worth considering a 70-300 lens? The only thing that possibly puts me off is that the 70-200 I currently use isn't too bad in terms of handling and weight, and I'm guessing that the 70-300 would be more unwieldy.

The 70-300L is around 50% heavier. But you'll almost certainly find the extra 100mm of focal length will be appreciated.

Stick with the 7D for a body. It's a fantastic camera.

For the lens, I'd say have a serious look at the Canon EF 70-300 F4-5.6. It's obviously not gonna be a 70-300, more 112-480, but the IS on the lens is fantastic, the autofocus is brilliant and it's just a generally brilliant combination.

The 70-200 F/2.8 is a really heavy lens and IMO, any telephoto lens is kinda silly without IS.

I have to say I really find this repeated mantra about how heavy the 2.8 is, rather overstated. It's not a light weight lens I'll agree, but unless you have a particular physical issue to deal with, I can't believe any adult is going to struggle with it. I couldn't afford the IS version of the 2.8 when I bought mine, but its done me a favour as it saved me cash and I've never been in a situation where I wished it was a stabilised lens.

a 70-200 2.8 is a great lens, and its light, id not say its heavy, maybe for a child ;) and well, IS isnt needed really, i have my IS taped off all the time, never use it

:plusone: The extra stop will be great for lower light days and it will also give you better separation with the narrower DOF. The only thing that makes the 2.8 heavy is the IS unit, if you are shooting sport, the S/S will be sufficient to overcome any camera shake especially being able to shoot one stop faster(2.8)

try using a 400 2.8 for a day, that makes you feel as if the 70-200 is a feather,
seriously though i dont think ive ever know anyone be disappointed with a 70-200 is and no is mki or mkii

Great advice everyone, thanks for everything so far. Don't want to sound daft but is the S/S Tugster mentioned shutter speed?
