Yes
We are planning a city break to Paris (we being me and my wife, plus 14 year old daughter) in the next few weeks.
It's been many years since I last went so can anyone suggest a friendly place to stay - requirements are cheap, quiet, comfy beds and close to a metro station.
Another priority is at least one proper eatery within a few minutes walk - the sort of place that is full of locals, that cooks food I've never heard of and smells wonderful, and run by friendly people who can cope with our lack of French..

Many thanks for any suggestions - even if you can't help with both, knowing a few good places to eat, districts to stay etc would all be appreciated !

Youth hostel?
The one we stayed at was basic but very cheap, and two minutes from the metro.
Auberge Internationale.

Chartier is worth a visit as a famous budget restaurant - paper tablecloths that they write the bill on.Great experience and not always easy to get a seat as it is in great demand.

France has a number of chains of budget hotels that are clean, comfy with no frills. Would one of these suit you?

From memory Ibis, Ibis Budget, f1 and Premiere Classe are a few to check. There are more. Obviously the better the location the more you'll pay

Are you going at the w/e? Lots of Parisians work there in the week and then AirBnB their flats at the w/e.

As long as you are OK climbing 8 flights of stairs there are some awesome bargains. Last time I went we stayed right near Place de L'Etoile.

Many thanks for the replies.

A youth Hostel. Now that's a thought - not sure I qualify as a youth despite my appearance...!
As for Chartier, that sounds brilliant, just the sort of place

They would be great, many thanks for reminding me about them.

Looks like we'll be going Sunday 11th, coming back 13th or 14th so a weekend AirBnB may be out, but thanks for the suggestion.

Loads of independent little hotels dotted all round Paris. Typically around 140 euro a night. Small and pokey, often a little dated but generally clean. I expect a fair bit nicer than a hostel at least.
As for easing, you can't turn a corner without finding somewhere to eat, so many options!

Been a few years since we went but we stayed in an Ibis about 1km away from the river and Louvre. Didn't bother with the metro - we walked everywhere or took a fly boat. Found food pretty expensive on the whole but very tasty (although they didn't seem to understand the concept of vegetarianism...)

Marmotel Etoile on the Avenue de la Grand Armee

Whilst it is in the 17th District it is very close to the Arc de Triomphe and the Argentine Metro Station is right outside.

Loads of Cafes and Restaurants and easy to get around.

It is basic 2* but clean..

If you do choose there, book a room that does not overlook the front. Traffic in Paris is incessant.

Have used it many times, not the cheapest but very central. It is on Trip Advisor.

I'm 60 :)
Youth hostels are for all ages. Typically about 15 euros a night.
We had a room for four of us. Most of our days were spent out so the room was for sleeping.
Comfortable but basic. They have communal kitchen areas for having coffee or you can cook if you want to, TV lounge and so on.
We had breakfast at one of the many cafes.

The simple green salad is the vegetarian option - but they always serve it with meat or fish:whistle:

I have always found Campanille, Etap, 1er Classe to be OK. If I remember correctly, the F1 hotels do not have loo/shower in the room.

Or with an anchovy garnish.

look on Air Bnb just make sure you get a place that is a superhost

Only stayed in 2 F1 motels some years ago ams, as you say, no facilities en suite, just a communal facility on each floor.

I stayed at the HotelTerminus Orleans last year when I was over there, clean modern hotel, small rooms - but metro station right outside and a short walk from Montparnasse for a wealth of options. It was priced pretty well when I stayed last April

Ha - that actually did make me laugh !!!

We did AirBnB last year for the 4 of us (all adult) and after climbing the tiniest staircase ever while carrying our luggage up 7 floors we discovered there was in fact a lift !!! It could only carry 2 persons or 1 & a suitcase, but it did save me from a certain heart-attack :D

But yes - AirBnB was great & cheap for us too

Depends what you consider cheap? Cheap for Capital City may not always be on a par with more rural locations.

Last time I stayed was in an Ibis - broken furniture, holes kicked in the door and drunks fighting in the corridor at 3am. It's a chain I'd generally avoid, but Formula 1 should be economical & OK.

We stayed in a small flat, cheaper than a hotel, only had one bedroom, but a bed settee in the living area.

Hotel: La Cour du 5ème - Chambre d'hôtes

The owner brings breakfast to the room, she lives next door, very charming, close to metro, if you book direct with her you’ll get cheaper than we paid through an agent.

House boat wouldn’t be a bad idea at the minute
Yep it looks like they are having a bit of water and rat problems at the moment

Just had a look on Airbnb for the dates you mentioned. There is loads available at reasonable prices.

I have friends who are there at the minute and some of the RER is flooded along with many underpasses. I don't know if you are flexible on dates but it might be worth hanging on a bit. If not make sure the metro or RER nearest to where you choose is operational.
