hi

i am going to jessops today to look at buying tings for my
400d,

i am after a new lens to replace the 18-55, what ones should i look at.

and also the battery grip.

any advice on looking for a good lens over anot so good one?

anything else worth looking at????

thanks

M

Jessops are indeed dear, but offer the best opportunity to actually try things out on the high street. So stay in there for a good while, try out lots of lenses and accessories, and then disappear off home to buy them online, or second hand from here

My advice would be, dont go to jessops.

i'd agree with that ,personally i've found that whilst a few of jessops staff are knowledgable a lot of them dont have a clue

is there any alternative shops in your neck of the woods??

By my reconing that means you should have paid £123 from onestop ( based on import duty and VAT )

Not such a big saving then when you consider the warenty issues etc.

I don't have a problem with things being more than onestop in Jessops, they have to make some money. But most things are much more than other UK sellers. And that's before you add into the equation the generally unhelpful staff.

400duser - Which Jessops are you going to? maybe we could suggest alternative shops in the same area?

There is no import duty or VAT from onestop.
If your package is unlucky enough to be checked by customs and gets import duty or tax slapped on onestop will refund you the money...
Although, Ive never heard of anyone who thats happened to

All our prices include FREE delivery and are "VAT free" guaranteed, meaning the prices you see here are all you have to pay. NO hidden charges. Any VAT incurred will be reimbursed.

i am in newbury, i do not want to buy from them as some one else said i am going just to try it all out.

i like badminton photography so a wide aperture would be nice but also i want a lens which will stay with me if i upgrade my body.

as for thins like battery grips i am unsure how do i test it, just see if i like how it feels.

Yes but illegally imported goods priced against legally sold goods isn't exactly fair is it?

But be warned that a warranty claim may well require a receipt that shows the vat has been paid.

Badminton photography = indoor sports = a lens that's fast and reasonably long?

Battery grips make a big difference to how that smaller Canon's feel and balance. Plug one in and see.

Its not illegal in the slightest :)
Many places that import goods offer to pay the VAT as part of the price

If the import duty/VAT is paid then it's not illegal, but as you state this is rarely the case and so the items are illegally imported ;)

can we go back to the thread please!!

also would f2.8 be fast enough

If the item is sent with the intention that customs will slap VAT on it and they dont it doesnt mean the vendor acted illegaly. If onestop were doing anything strictly illegal they would have been shut down a loooong time ago.
Im sure other places where you can get good prices also rely on customs not doing their job properly.............

so would that be quick enough indoors, as my sigma 70-300mm f4-56 is too slow. it com sout with about 1/60 at f4

it comes out with a shutter speed of about 1/60

It might be, depends on the light. I have taken some portraits indoors at f2.8 today using my macro lens and in AV mode the camera wanted to shoot at about 1/60 sec (the light was quite bad). A bit slower than i wanted but still ok
2.8 will be about twice as fast as the lens you have now

I replaced the 18-55mm kit lens with the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 Macro which is a great all round lens and very sharp if you get a good one - in case you are unaware - Sigma's seem to vary in quality so you need to check it out before you buy if possible. (or order online from a company with a good returns policy)

Expect to pay between £220 - £260 for a new one.

i know that is my problem i have 1/60 at f5 but need about 1/250.

would the f2.8 be able to get that shutter speed

ok many thanks dan, would the ISO of 200 produce noise

I am also in the same boat looking to up grade, i do landscape and waterfalls/canals etc and have a budget of £300 , the 3 lenses that im looking at are sigma 10-20 sigma 17-70 or sigma 24-60 the last one is reduced at W/E TO £199 THE 10-20 is on at Amazon through next tag at £288 inc postage . I belive all 3 are good 1&3 being ex dg hope this helps and if anyone would like to comment on the 3 ive mentioned id be greatful
yours gwh

thanks, i am partly intrested in the 17-70,

how does it compare to the 18-50

OK - my two-penneth.

I dont hink you should trade up on the 18-55 just because it is the expected upgrade. Its a perfectly useable lens and you'll be upgrading build quality, not image quality.

So, for your badminton lens:

You've clearly been out and about at games with your current set up so you know where to stand, how close you can get and what focal length you need. So, have you considered a fast prime? you'll need something upward of 70mm for telephoto and that should be sufficient on a 1.6 crop.

The following are current prices form WEX so bear in mind you'll find cheaper with some research - all Canon EF:

1. 85mm 1.8 £259
2. 100mm 2 £299
3. 135mm 2.8 £285

also note there is a 50mm 1.4 for £223 and a 50mm 1.8 for £69 but these are likely too short for you.

anything between 1.2 and 2.8 should be fine for indoor sport. If you have a kidney or grandmother to sell then the 70-200 2.8 IS is perfect for your needs

With the 400d you'll have useable shots with ISO south of 400

thanks, but as you say they are a bit too much money. First of all i am lalowed to stand on the side of the courts in my club as the photographer so a 50 mm is actually enough. So the main reason is one the aperature but i also like the idea of having a better quailty lens. If the image quality will be know better than i am not sure????

any other ideas

thanks

Mark

2.8 is twice as fast as 5.6. Therefore you will get about 1/100.
You need to up the ISO to get 1/250

Er no, it's 4 times as fast - f2.8 is 2 stops faster than f5.6

so if you're after a fast courtside lens why not the EF 50mm 1.8 for under £70? you'll have to nail your focus from that distance with such a narrow ap tho!

will focus be a problem than, with the f1.8

Ahh i didnt know that, thanx
Is aperture an exponential scale?

Yes, each stop down halves the previous amount of light so you need to double the exposure time so:

f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16, f22

each have a stop between them and the shutter speeds might read something like:

1/800, 1/400, 1/200, 1/100, 1/50, 1/25, 1/12, 1/6
