I dont think its that obvious in real life, it only looks bad in the photo, I've seen one of these before, but it was red eye.
One eyes retina reflected red in the photo, the other didn't suggesting there was a problem with one retina.
Seen something like this before, but i think it was a photo of a dog! And as someone said already, in real life you would not notice a subtle change like that, but the flash would amplify an issue on a close up shot.
We only discovered one of our dogs had a cataract because of a photograph. One eye appeared normal the other very milky/cloudy. Cost a fortune at the vets but she's worth it.
Shame the young girl in the article had to lose an eye, but it could have been much worse.
