Radio 5 live has just announced that the Welsh manager Garry Speed has died.

unbelievable. Found hung at his home this morning. Tragic news.

very sad.I watched him too on TV yesterday.

Damn! A tragedy for Wales and football and more so his family, very sad :(

So sad, a legend at Leeds

Reading the footy boards he's fondly remembered at a lot of other clubs as well, genuinely very well liked and respected everywhere

RIP

I'm a Leeds season ticket holder. Elland Road will be a sad place next Saturday.

I am lucky enough to have met the guy and pass a ball about with him on the pitch when mascot in 1993.

RIP Gary

One of my heros in the early 90s. Speed and mcallister were the best midfield partnership by a mile.

Undeniably tragic and a very sad day indeed. A huge loss to the world of football.

RIP Gary Speed.

RIP Gary

Couldn't believe what I was hearing this morning. He was one of those players who was respected by fans of all teams. I watched the very moving scenes prior to kick off at The Liberty, the spontaneous applause during the minute's "silence" brought a lump to my throat. How hard must that have been for Shay Given.

RIP Gary, a life way too short but you gave so much with it.

Such terrible and shocking news. I always thought of him as such a true professional who gave his all. I hope his family are supported during their loss and given time to grieve and not pressured by the sports press.

RIP

Just read that quite a few people yesterday spoke to him and say he sounded happy

It really is very strange. One of the many people on 5 live was saying that yesterday he was chatting about things he was going to do with the national team, about when he was playing golf next week and then he hangs himself. Either somthing very bad happened to him last night or he was very good at hiding his personal side.

As has been said though he was respected by fans of every team and liked by just about everyone.

Hopefully this will raise some much needed attention about depression. Too many people assume if you have a good job, car, wife, kids it means you can't have anything to be unhappy about, the harsh truth is depression does not work like that.

It doesn't respect your achievements in life, it doesn't care how many kids you have it can strike at any time and when it does everything else is thrown out of perspective, it is a crippling illness! Stan Collymore posted a blog about this very subject on friday night.

I just hope this will raise awareness as there is still too much ignorance about the causes of depression, how people cope and the severe effect it can have on people.

R.I.P Gary Speed, a footballer i always enjoyed watching growing up and he looked to have a promising career as a manager.

Has it been announced that he was suffering from depression?

Was a very difficult game this afternoon being there.

We had a lot of fans coming up to the wireroom before KO asking if we had any news, lots of very subdued people around the ground, and we had no idea about whether it was common knowledge throughout the stadium.

You could clearly see all the welsh players (Ash Williams, Jo Allen, Neil Taylor and James Collins) looked very rattled and Shay Given was a state. I don't think any of the people there would have minded if they'd postponed the game entirely.

It was hugely moving being at the ground today, and understandably the football was definitely second-placed to the news.

Difficult day all round...having met Garry numerous times, and found him to be one of the nicest gentlemen in football, I'm absolutely gutted this evening.

Just saw motd2 where the crowd interrupted the minutes silence with applause. Good on them, it must have felt more apt in the stadium.

Right, I've cleaned the thread. Can we please stick to the reason it was started and resist the urge to speculate and spread rumours

Thank you

RIP Gary, one of football's nice guys.

A tragic and surprising loss for so many. Hopefully family and friends understand why he did what he did a little more than has reached the press. I can only imagine how horrible it must be for that to happen out of the blue :(

Devastating for the family. Who knows the reason. People will speculate, but we may never know. A friend of mine, who showed no signs of depression hung himself the morning of a planned family trip.

Absolutely, I was talking about this partnership this afternoon.

Never heard of him, but am sure he will be missed. It's never easy when something like this happens, let's hope either way it gets sorted quickly

This is a sensitive subject, but lets keep it civil please gents.

Kipax, give it a rest, I've just had Purpleclouds PMing me to give me a talking to - I'll leave it at that.

Mods, apologies. R.I.P. Garry Speed.
