Fuji x100

This weekend, I got up early and stuck a 10-stop filter onto my X100...

Nice shot Will. The X-Series really does produce amazing quality images but AF was a tad annoying. That aside, one of the nicest cameras I've ever owned.

If you will be using RAW, then get the fastest card you can. I have a Sandisk Extreme pro class 10, 95 mbs card.
I did some tests when I bought mine. On continuous drive mode, you can store 8 raws or 10 jpegs in a burst. It will take about the same time to write these images to the card and clear the buffer. ( about 10 -12 seconds) A 30 mbs card will take about 25 seconds to write the same amount of raw files.
Cant help with the case or hood though, I use mine naked.:whistling:
Allan

Cheers Allan, I will probably be using RAW depending on good I find the JPG output, I found a Sandisk Extreme 45mbs card for a good price so I thought I would try that as there is quite a price jump to the 95mbs one - reading around a number of people didn't see too much difference between the two but perhaps with continuous drive it may

Birthday coming up, want to treat myself. I already have a D700 and need a portable option so thinking of the X100, main reasons are large sensor and fast prime lens along with compactness. Any real competitor at the £500 mark combined with a 35mm or longer prime I should also look at?

Only thing I can think of is a NX1000 and 30mm.

Anybody received an X100 that was not as new from the refurb store? And did you ring them before placing an order to make sure they checked it before shipping?

I had a replacement as my first had SAB. I then requested an x100 with a newr serial number, which they delivered (at the second attempt..)

Regarding peoples request for case, i am using the black rapid snapr, fits fine with a hood and the side pockets fit filters in the original box.

Thanks Phil, ordered so will see. Did yours arrive with SAB? As supposedly they "check" them thoroughly before sending out.

Didn't take long to decide on a refurb then, I was the same really and couldn't find much else to compare that looked and handled as well as the X100.

Hope it arrives in great condition like my one

Lol yeah, had to order before 2pm for delivery tomorrow :)

Thanks, me to or it goes back.

Got mine today :-) Forgot I didn't have any SDHC cards though so quite frustrating having just internal memory and 6 pics max.

Is it just me or is this pricing crazy?!

£69 http://www.jessops.com/online.store...reme-pro-95mb-s-8gb-sdhc-card-82909/show.html

£16.30 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007PYBR7Y/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Here's my first ever shot/snap, jpeg, a bit of lightroom PP and cropped about a third. Really looking forward to doing RAW.

Like you I have D700.
I also wanted a lightweight walkabout. I've got the X100. Didn't check any other cameras. Lusted after one for ages. It doesn't disappoint in any way.
Happy to live with its little quirks. I'm sure it's improved my picture taking. Very liberating only having one focal length.

Great to hear, I've had an assortment of CSC cameras and while the quality was good I prefer larger sensors with fast primes, rx100 is a want but can't justify that price. I'm sure it'll be fine, I had a 5dc and loved that even with the poor af.

The sab developed after about a month. I had a replacement in my hands within a week so no real issue. Been perfect since.

Had a quick peek at work, first thoughts, nicely made, arrived in excellent condition, very light tripod mark at the bottom but its a 22 serial so Q2 2012. Not sure its worth sending back only for them to send me a 12-13 serial. Never had a chance to check FW version, OVF and EVF are nice, AF is slow compared to my D700 but I knew that before purchasing.

Will take some snaps at F2 tonight, hopefully its sharp, needs to be for my shallow dof use. So far pretty pleased.

Crazy prices indeed. How Jessops can justify that price beats me. I actually got the same card from Amazon a few months ago for £14.99
Twist, I'll be interested to see how you find F2 shots. Fuji themsves say its not sharp at that setting ( !) and my f2 images have been softer than I would expect. I guess if ultimate sharpness is not your goal at F2 you will be fine

Use a fast sd card, disable preview, use quick start mode, and also have a play with manual focus - you can then focus using the exposure lock button, mimicking back button focus of the d700. set the raw button to iso, and the function button to ND.

Thats all i can think of off the top of my head!

Allan my pic above is f2. I reserve judgement on how sharp wide open is for a while though.

If its as sharp as this at F2 Ill be happy.... if not, not so happy and may send it back as I rarely shoot over F2.8 with a FF. Thanks Allan and Phil.

Those images certainly are good, I think you will start to notice the softness if you use it for closer work, but even with the slight softness, I am very happy with mine at all apertures.

First thing I notice is AF is slooooooowwwwww/inaccurate in dimmer light (even with overhead lights on), the 5D was faster and quite a bit more accurate. Images have a nice quality to them though, I think I need to test more and change a few settings.

Any tips to get the best from it, settings I should try? edit... can live with the IQ and look/feel as that is superb but the AF lets this lovely camera down.

In low light situations use AF-C and try adjusting the focus box.
Ensure you are running the latest firmware too.
For normal shooting I use AF-S

It's a great camera but has its quirks

Jessops are known for their apparent over pricing. I'm all for supporting local businesses but the difference in price between Amazon and themselves is laughable.

I wouldn't class them as a local business, it's a national chain with Internet presence. They seem to cater more for inexperienced photographers who want to buy accessories at any cost. But, sometimes they do have good deals and I will use them then. There is a local Independant camera shop near to me and even their prices are better than Jessops on a lot of things.

I find Jessops cameras well priced and they always have the latest cameras from day 1. Sure the accessories are expensive but they have to be able to afford to keep stores open so we can go have a play with all the latest gear.

We took Eleri to see the illuminations at Blackpool last week. There was a beautiful sunset, which added to the warm colours in the shot. I really like the rusults from the x100 into/across the sun.....I just have to get my keeper rate up when Im trying to shoot her in action!

I'm struggling with my recent X100 purchase and I'm not sure if it's me or whether there's a fault :)

I thought I would start off in P mode (and auto ISO) and go from there - in bright conditions at the coast on Saturday I was finding most shots it was setting it to 1/4000 at F16

Some of the shots did look a little dark and some way too dark - several times I tried choosing a more suitable setting (well in my view :) based on my SLR experience) and they looked well overexposed

I also tried the different metering but similar problems

Photos indoors seemed to expose ok and also night shots seemed fine

Reading some of the SAB reports I'm wondering if that's what my camera is suffering from

So any thoughts and are there some specific things you would suggest I try...

Cheers all

1/4000 at F16 sounds way off, how could it need to be that with presumably ISO at a low number. What ISO was the camera selecting?

Did you have 400 DR selected as that can increase ISO?

Maybe try putting it in aperture priority and taking pictures of the same scene at every f stop from 2 upwards and see whether they become increasingly overexposed?

It sounds like you had a high iso selected - even though the camera is in auto iso, it will not go below the iso you have selected.

To test SAB, select f16 and look at the aperture opening closing. More details here:-

Thanks for the tips and ideas will have a look at the photos later to see what ISO was set - the couple I looked at yesterday I think were ISO200

I'll try and get out to try a few more test shots with different apertures to see what differences that makes

While walking the dog i decided to try the high speed sync with my on board flash.
This is f4 @ 1/4000th, talk about eat the sun.

and without flash, aperture priority f4 @1/20th. great resistance to flare though..

Hi Trevorbray.. When you say on board flash, do you refer to the built in flash? I haven't experimented with high shutter flash sync yet. Got any tips on that?

I've noticed after a week of having my x100 that there is a significant "after shot" delay in EVF mode between taking shots. As in the time from pressing and releasing the shutter button and being able to do so again. The screen goes black.

It's much faster in OVF. Anyone know is that normal or is there something I'm doing to cause it? It's enough time to mean I miss shots.
