Fuji X-E1/X-E2/X-E2S/X-E3 Owners Thread

Would the 1 and 2 fall on their arse if I tried to shoot boxing with it?

I'd love to see the results of that. I find myself increasingly drawn to the idea of an XE2.

Success with low light action? That could be a clincher.

Well that's just it. I can't be doing with manual focus, don't think I have the patience or skill set to be focusing manually at ringside.

I have (stupidly??) agreed to help a mate out shoot some boxing which is not my thing at all and is probably the only thing stopping me swapping over as I'm unsure if one would cope with regards to focus tracking and whether the evf would be ok?

Any help appreciated!

Dont let some boxing event stop you from buying a camera which is going to be with you for a couple of years or so. The boxing ring should be well lit?? On your other XE-2 thread there were several high iso shoots, I included one at iso 5000. Your as bad as me faffing around looking at different cameras, particularly Fuji and Olympus. I think I have made my decision, Fuji XT1, but I'm not too sure:D

My x100s high iso performance makes my Nikon D7000 look silly.

It's the auto focus that has me hesitating. I need convincing it's good enough for me. Having said that, split screen manual focusing is terrific.

I'm guessing the XE2 has that?

It's not the high iso I have an issue with as like you say, the posted images were superb. It's more the focusing and tracking at ringside...

ideally I would have the cash to buy one and see for myself but I haven't. :D

How many boxing matches are you covering? Can't you change afterwards? I'd be very surprised if an X-E1 could keep up with a D7000 AF wise.

With reference high ISO, remember the Fuji at ISO 1600 is really about ISO 1000 ;) So you'd need to compare a shot from a Fuji at around ISO 2500 with a D7000's ISO 1600 to see how the noise compares. Interestingly. the X-E1 actually looks a bit cleaner at 3200 than the Nikon at 1600 to my eyes http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x-e1/20

Why is the iso different? Do they just like playing with peoples head?? Lol. I still think that they're better too.

I have 7 paid gigs up to yet and a couple of tag a longs.

I think you've just helped me no end, mf-g! Thanks. :)

Would be interested to see how the boxing pictures go. For me the AF is the biggest problem with my X-E1 as it's main use is for family pics and it's fine for static pictures but once there's any movement it struggles.

I knew this before purchasing but it probably is slightly worse than expected. It was dreadful prior to loading up the latest firmware!

Saying all that - I'm keeping it at the moment until I decide which way to go! It's a lovely camera to use otherwise.

Received this grip/L bracket for my X-E1 today, first impressions are very well made and no rough edges that I can feel

Fits the camera fine, pictured below with the portrait angle part removed, came supplied with the required allen keys

Bought on Ebay from a Chinese company, no problems at all and good comms too, really can't complain for 27 quid incl postage and delivery time was approx three weeks.

Took about 2 weeks for my lens to arrive, although took a day longer than it should thanks to the numpties at city link not following instructions.

I've been following this thread since the start and the posted images look great especially those at high iso..I'm gonna ask a question that probably only I can answer but here goes anyway..would you exchange Nikon D5100 for XE-1?

Hi Robin, Yes without a doubt.

hi there,
I guess you need to look at your reason for wanting to change,
is there something your 5100 doesn't do ? or is it more a case of gas? (which is still a fair reason!) id say the best reason for this change is size and weight of the overall package. your Nikon with good glass at the front is very capable of quality images.

Yes Nik, size and weight would be the main reason, especially as I have a slight disability, what do you mean by gas?

gas is-gear acquisition syndrome (basically wanting new toys!). another one to look at if you don't need to change lens is the Fuji x100 its fantastic quality. Your reasons for changing make sense, but try one 1st if you can they are different in use to a dslr.

Nik..you're right, there is an element of wanting a new 'toy'..this is what is holding me back, am I really that unsatisfied with the D5100!!

there's nothing wrong with wanting a new toy, that's part of having a hobby. The Fuji x-series are a joy to use if they are your thing, I love the whole concept.

Thanks George..well you seem pretty sure, why would that be?

Robin

Hi Robin, First of all I use Nikon FF gear extensively for a lot of my professional duties and have done so for many years so in no way am I against Nikon equipment I am only comparing the two cameras you have quoted.
I have not been the owner of a D5100 but a member of our staff had one and at the time I had an X-E1 which he has since bought from me to replace his D5100 and I have upgraded to an X-T1, (I'm also lucky enough to have an X100s and an X-20).

During this time I had tried the D5100 both outside and in the studio with pro grade glass attached and the end results were very good indeed as you would expect from Nikon, but shot for shot they were no better than the X-E1.

The focussing on the D5100 was slightly faster than the X-E1 even with the very latest firmware update for both body & lenses.
The battery life is better on the D5100.
The Nikon flash system is better (Fuji are lacking in this department but apparantly there are things coming out soon from other manufacturers).
There's probably one or two other things about the D5100 that could be thought of as better than the X-E1 depending on personal taste.

The X-E1 has more Micro detail in the images than the D5100.
The X-E1 appeared to have more dynamic range in the images at comparable ISO settings.
The X-E1 had less noise and the images were sharper at comparable ISO settings, although it has been said that the Fuji ISO settings appear to be a little inflated but I have not noticed this.
The X-E1 is smaller and lighter to carry, and is quieter to use than the D5100.
The Fuji lenses are optically every bit as good and in some cases better than comparable lenses from Nikon. I can't compare them with other manufactures lenses as I've never used them.

For me the X-E1 plus points outweigh the D5100 plus points.
But please note this is only my opinion and obviously other peoples opinion may differ. We are all entitled to our own opinion.

Hope this helps.,

George.

Hey guys, anyone had the chance to compare the XE-1 and XM-1? Is the image quality actually any different at all? Also, does anyone use the 18mm f2?

I owned an XM-1 for a while but just couldnt get on with it, the lack of viewfinder and generally cheap build quality really annoyed me. Also the wheel on the back just feel weird to use and I didnt like the general design.
Ive since realised the XE-1 has came down in price quite significantly and im now looking at an XE-1 with an 18mm f2 or something similar, I bought an E-M5 but just cant get used to the handling of it compared to Fuji with the manual controls for shutter speed and aperture on the body/lens.

I currently own the D5100, D700 and XE-2.

Whilst image quality wise the XE-2 is every bit as good as the D5100, Im not sure personally Id want to swap the XE-2 for the D5100.

For me both a very different cameras and are better at certain things than others. The D5100 is my go to camera with the 35mm f/1.8 when Im doing photo shoots of kids in their homes, because its light, and pretty compact. Its also not very intimidating compared to the D700. The fuji, I don't think would fare to well in the same situation with the 35mm f/1.4 as it just can't focus fast enough for quick little kids.

Of course if you aren't shooting fast moving things, then there is no reason why the Fuji can't be on equal with the D5100.

The Fuji excels in being a fully portable, compact "thinking" camera. By that I mean it needs you to slow down a bit and take your time over shots. Its perfect for me when I go out walking, as I can take my little vitruvian tripod and get some great landscapes without having to cart half a photography store around with me, and each shot can be carefully set up and taken. In my experience with the fuji so far, its not as good on the fly as the D5100 is. Everything just takes that little bit longer to do, like changing the focus point,or ISO or actually focusing.

Tom.. would you agree with the points that George raised in his comparison?

Robin

Ill be honest, Im not into pixel peeping and seeing if one camera has more micro detail than another. I just use them and if they look good with the photos Ive taken, then Im happy. The X-E2 does appear to be slightly better at higher ISO's, but I haven't compared them side to side. It certainly is lighter and quieter, but the D5100 isn't exactly heavy or noisy.
