OK, at first glance it may seem like an unfair fight, but for portraits and landscapes, which would be better?

D300 is loads quicker, resolution is better (12MP)

S5 wins hands down on colour and dynamic range (6MP)

I've got both, the S5 produces much "nicer" images, but it's the slowest camera I've ever owned :bang:

i was going to get an S5 instead of my D300.

but as i bought the D300 the D80 is the back up.

S5 great camera, starting to think maybe i should have got one of them.

Is the S5 slower than the D200? I use a D200 at the moment, but don't find it particularly slow in any respect, and they are basically the same camera apart from the sensor.... in which respect is the S5 slow?

Yes, much, much slower, the files it produces are huge, they take ages to write to the card, withe the DR turned up you're looking at just over 1 (that's ONE) fps...

Hell yes. SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWER! :D

You will soon get used to it mate. It is a MUCH better camera than the D200.

Gary.

By the way, you are in dundee. Wan't to meet up and you can have an extended play with it? :D

Gary.

I've got 2 S5's and love em for people pics! Colour is fantastic. Yes you wouldn't want to shoot Formula 1 with it but its not ment for that.

Gary... yeah, that would be good - going back to work next week, so need to get a few things sorted out over the next couple of weeks, but will give you a shout and maybe meet up in Fife somewhere at the weekend sometime soon? Haven't been to any of the harbour villages for a long, long time if you fancy that some Sat/Sun?

I could MURDER a chippie at Anstruther? :D ! Weekend sucks as I have plans, perhaps sometime next week?

now thats a plan! chippie there and an s5 = cracking time for all.

s5 is helluva slow but for what it does it's worth it.

I never meant this weekend anyway, mate - after I get settled and sorted at work - maybe in 2-3 weeks would be good for me...

Post a link to it then... I like browsing other people's pics, it makes me realise how **** I am myself... :D

Yeah but Gary. How slow is the S5 compared to the Mamiya?

I'd love a S5, but got a D200 as I'm impatient. Would not mind getting one aswell though :D

I have both the S5 and the D200 (great combination btw...)

I LOVE the S5 to bits, but as Gary has said, it is really &*%@*^&*( slow, chucking out 24mb RAW files, and the time for it to process the extra sensor data requires... a lot of patience, the resolution is limited, and even with no DR and in JPEG, 3fps still seems to be a snail's pace when you can go pewpewpewpewpewpewpewpew with the D200 at 5fps...

S5 over a D300, maybe not... S5 and a D200, for about the same total price as a D300 (second hand), definitely!

Second hand S5's don't actually appear to come very cheaply, but I'd probably rather have two bodies (D200, which I love, and S5) rather than the one D300, which it would need to be due to finances... the only downside I can see to this is that neither of them is much use at higher ISO, but bumping up the ISO from 100 is something I very rarely do anyway.

Is the menu structure the same as the D200?

The menu system is completely alien, I mean COMPLETELY alien to Nikon users. 100% different. It is simple to be fair, just different.

Gary.

You'd drive yourself daft trying to jump from a D200 to an S5 on a shoot. It depends really on what you shoot mostly, if you don't need the high iso or the 51 point af, then keep the D200 and buy an S5 too. If you want a shot of the S5 and the D300 side by side let me know..

Thanks - some nice shots in there.

Probably shouldn't have looked as I just want one now... speed is not of the essence for me... or so my wife keeps telling me! :D

Forgot to ask.... what's the file extension on the raw files (if not NEF), and are they well enough supported?
