In just 2 weeks fuel duty will rise again, bringing the total tax paid at the pumps to 71 pence in every pound - despite Prime Minister Gordon Brown promising not to raise fuel duty.

Fuel duty is set to rise by roughly 2 pence per litre on April 1st meaning that 66 pence of the average litre of fuel goes directly to the Treasury.

Fuel tax goes into a central government tax pot. It's not necessarily allocated back out to motoring, so fuel tax can be spent on anything – the NHS, housing, pensions or even banking bailouts.

At the height of soaring pump prices Brown made a promise during Prime Minister's Questions on July 16th 2008 not to raise fuel duty for a year.

He stated: "In recognition of the problem people face with petrol, we are freezing duty on petrol for the full year."

Brown broke this promise in December 2008 when he added 2 pence per litre to fuel duty to offset the reduction of VAT to 15% - a move which angered UK hauliers who are able to claim fuel VAT back, but not fuel duty.

He is set to break the promise for a second time on April 1st when fuel duty on unleaded and diesel will rise 1.84 pence per litre. Including the additional 15% VAT on top this will make the rise at the pumps around 2 pence per litre.

The Treasury have said that the only time further changes to fuel duty can take place are at the next Budget – which has been postponed from March until April 22nd, after the duty rise comes in.

A Labour politician doing the opposite of what he said, I don't believe it (not that any politicians don't lie)

Next we'll have a leader that we didn't vote in.... hang on a minute :bonk:

They might even go so far as to arrest opposition members, wait they've done that too :bang:

I'm surprised no-one has assasinated Gordon Brown yet...Maybe its because they know he wont be around any more after the next election anyway..... :D

What a suprise, the government is short of cash and they decide to go after either the motorists the drinkers or the smokers.
We end up paying for poor decisions by the treasury - ****es me off!

(Oh, and you don't vote ina leader, you vote in a party)

Check, check and check.

Well, I'm off to drown my sorrows after driving to the shop to buy some smokes.......Damn!

It's typical of this stupid government.

They keep raising fuel duty to discourage us from buying 4X4s and larger cars, then they want us the tax paying public to bale out Land Rover and Jaguar when we stop buying their cars.

So what they want you to do is buy a Jaguar car but just don't use it. :bang:

So sooner the dumb ****** that is Gordon Brown is out of power the better.

Oh yes you don't vote for a Prime Minister you vote for a party, but what when the party don't even elect the leader. NOBODY has ever elected Gordon Brown to power.

Local garage owner told me a couple of months ago that the latest duty increase was planned.

A lot of these gov. ministers don't have a driving licence including Brown and Alistair Eyebrows.
Same with that whinging little runt Livingstone. Couldn't pass his test so he became anti car.

These threads are getting mind numbingly boring.

Funny you should say that because I just added whiteflyer to my ignore list lol.

You don't drive...why even read posts on the subject, let alone comment on them?

Of course Motoring threads are boring to you, just as are your tedious and ill-informed comments slating motorists are boring to the rest of us...

I remind you once more - that TP was founded by a bunch of motorists - we like owning cars, driving cars and talking about cars...you don't...fine...

So stay out of threads that don't interest you and please refrain from posting your tiresome views in them.

I drive, but don't have a car anymore. I used to have a mini and took part in many many mini/MINI rallies. I LOVE driving. Absolutely. But just because I love driving doesn't mean to say that I don't agree with fuel duty increases.

If you've seen my other threads you'll see that I'm even planning on driving across EUROPE.

I was a moderator on various car forums too, including one for car modifiers. I was at the first ever Hot Import Nights show in Britain. I drove 8 hours to get there, and 8 hours back.

So that's no talk or photos from G20, no mention of the price rise of camera stuff due to the falling value of the pound, nothing about the police stopping you from taking a photo. Then there is the thread on driving penalty points and the David Jason apology thread and the government snooping topic.

Need I go on, politics effects EVERY part of our lives and if we don't debate it we will end up living a far far worse society run by a very small minority.

One of the biggest problems with the UK is that the population don't discuss or get involved in political debate enough.

:suspect:

but fuel duty really grips my ****

It's all the fault of politicians....

:exit:

:D

Hmm, politicians

In the old days the workers voted Labour because the labour party was for the workers.
The Tory's where the party for the well to do as me old mum used to say.

The Liberals where well meaning ,but absolutely middle class Wally's (with very good intentions though) that would never get in power.

Then the Labour party discovered that they would not get into power without going to the right a bit more in it's policy's.

Trouble was they went so far right they became Tory two ,the Maggie worshippers.

Then the Tory's thought ,hey thats not on, we will play them at their game and started to preach more left wing.

Now the bloody lot are so mixed up and so confused they tell us little fibs,:eek:
No ,I hear you cry ,we elected them to stand for what we believe in.

Well , they are all on the gravy train and not honest people..no, I hear you cry communist tw't at me ,but brother ,come the revolution I'm going to.....................................................................................................................................Bloody Australia , where they don't give a sh#t for anything .....................exept a few tinnys and the barbie.......:D:D

LOOOOOOOONG rant over........:bonk:

Don't be so sure about Oz. I wouldn't bloody move there.

I'm off to Cyprus to join the small army of ex-pats already there when I can afford it

Well, you can live on Beans-on-Cheese-on-Toast indefinitely, whereas only petroleum distillates make your car go Vrooo-oooom...

There's not much point moaning about fuel duty. The government decides how much tax it needs to get out of us and it will get that amount regardless.

It doesn't matter if the tax is on fuel, Mars bars, left handed screwdrivers or framed pictures of goats. They will get the tax one way or another.

To me, it makes sense to put it on something which causes pollution.

Steve.

im talking like driving your kids 200 yards round the corner to school

Yep don't they just infuriate you, i made the mistake of going out the other day when the kids were finishing school, it's virtually impossible to drive down the rd because all the lazy ****ing parents can't be bothered to walk there kids a 3rd of a mile, and park and double park there cars outside the school, and just to think when i was at school i walked nearly 3 miles

Indeed very true, and the most depressing thing is we can't do jack **** about it, as all governments are the same

The sooner we lose our reliance on oil the better. I do fancy the Model S.

Anyone else getting 5% off their fuel?

strange thing is that no matter what the price is ..... people still find the money to pay it and im not meaning for those essential journeys to work......... im talking like driving your kids 200 yards round the corner to school

I see this argument all the time, and while it's annoying that there are loads of cars around schools at in/out time - how do you know they all live close to the school?

Because i see a lot of them in my local shop, so the chances are they are very local, and i even know some of them as they are my neighbours.
