I was wondering if someone could give me some recommendations on free photo editing software please. I'm not great with computers so something that's nice & easy to use would be great

If you have a canon dslr Thay come with free canon DPP photo editing softwear. Or you can downoad it from canons website.

You could give Picasa a try, you also have Gimp, Fotor, and Serif do a free package.lots of others depending on what system you use.

:plus1: for Picasa.

Basic stuff, but quick & easy to use. Works fine as a `library` too.

FastStone image viewer has some basic tools and will load and convert raw files.

Thanks & will have a look at all what has been suggested. My Sony DSC-H400 only does jpeg files & being new to photography it's such a big learning curve for me

Picasa if you want simple Gimp if you are happy to get to grips with a few more menus and tools.

Are you using windows or OSX?

For windows Irfanview is simple, fast, effective and can even batch process. DigiKam is more flexible, capable of sophisticated image development, rather than just a basic tweak and also has cataloguing tools to keep track of images. GIMP is like photoshop in many ways, though less sophisticated and clunkier.

For OSX/Mac, Fotor has already been mentioned, and it's like a cut-down version of Irfanview. GIMP will also run on the Mac.

Also try if your using Windows vista or lower, Windows picture it 10, there is a 9 but it's got less on the menu, all told it's a easy program to use, just takes a bit of finding it though on the net.

GIMP for a free and almost full PS substitute. Personally I never got used to the interface (many years ago now) and just used PS... I haven't looked back.

Rosie Hardy used to use GIMP but I'm not sure if she still does.

I've come back to using Google's Picasa again recent for quick edits - not perfect but does a good job of the basics. Photoshop/Lightroom for anything serious (but this isn't free)

With Photoshop - £9 a month isn't going to break the bank for a really amazing piece of software...
I'm afraid it will break the bank. £9 is food for a day.

At about £1 per use, it doesn't exactly fit in a list of free editing programs. ☺

Blimey £9 a day on food that's extravagant!
I have that for the month with change left over...
So yes £9 will indeed break the bank.

No other way to save for the 1dx MK11 :-)

I'd plus 1 on lightzone - its not quite as good as darktable, but DT isnt available for wondows (I have it on a linux box, and LZ on the windows laptop) - on another thread T mentioned a malware alert on download for LZ but this may be due to over zealous AV software as security certificate errors are commonon free software (certainly my copy downloaded without a problem)

well there is that 'free' old version of photoshop still kicking around out there - its fine for beginners in terms of functions. I tried GIMP never got on with it.

I'm still running W7 so it probably isnt going to work for me...

Might be worth a try, I had the earlier version running on Win 7 before upgrading (or is that down grading:thinking: ). I doubt you will have any problems.

Wish i had £9 a day to spend on food :LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:

BTW, everything is free if you know where to look. ;)

No there isn't. If you read the licence it's a download for previous owners who've lost their media.

Mixture of Picasso and gimp will do everything you need for free, with tutorials for both all over yputube

hence the 'free' part of my post. i didnt put a link in so if people looked into it, they'd see that on most posts online that talk about and offer a link to it.

Photodirector 5 was pretty good, though raw development wasn't quite up to lightroom standards. PD6 should be even better, and well worth the cost of entry.

The windows version of Darktable will be available for download soon, i'll pop a link up when it is.

As promised, the place to get DT is www.partha.com I have started a new thread in the software section with the same link, so others not watching this thread may find it.

Sadly £9 a month is a lot for me as i'm sadly unable to work due to a couple of health problems (hate not being able to do my trade as a mechanic) so have very little income which is why I asked about free software.
Thanks to everyone for their input

But you don't need to spend that sort of money anyway. There are plenty of other programs. Some cheaper, some free, where you can get the same results, or better. Which is what this thread is all about.
