Personally I can recommend either Formby Point (which is free anyway, except for the car parking), or Fountains Abbey, which is gorgeous (although it's useful if the weather is nice).

Enjoy free entry to hundreds of National Trust places to visit on Saturday 9 September 2006 and help make history.
The doors to many of our houses, gardens and other much-loved properties around England, Wales and Northern Ireland are opening for free on 9 September to celebrate Heritage Open Days, as part of the History Matters pass it on campaign.
Whether you decide to return to a favourite National Trust haunt or choose to discover something new, we want you to have a great day out.
In doing so you'll add your support to History Matters pass it on, which is calling on people to show the importance of history in their everyday lives. And with your help, we hope to break visitor records for one day.
