Yes
of the terrorism act for taking photographs of Sellafield.
Breaking news now on Sky.

I think we will see a lot more of this in the coming weeks and months whether guilty or innocent.

Website just says 5 men. No mention of photography.

On Sky News it says four men arrested for taking photographs.
Breaking news ticker at the bottom of the screen.

BBC say four men arrested for "filming" and they are Bangladeshi. (not that it should matter).

They have been held over night, I think if they were hobbyist togs, the police would have reviewed the footage and let them go. There is obviously something more, and whether they are guilty of a crime or not will be revealed in time.

AFP) – 1 hour ago

LONDON — Police said on Tuesday they had arrested five men under anti-terrorism legislation close to the Sellafied nuclear plant.

The men were stopped in a vehicle by officers near the nuclear site in West Cumbria at around 4:30 pm (1530 GMT) on Monday.

"Police officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary conducted a stop check on a vehicle close to the Sellafield site in West Cumbria," said the statement from Cumbria Police.

"As a result, police officers from Cumbria Constabulary arrested five men from London, all aged in their 20s, under section 41 of the Terrorism Act."

The men are being moved to Manchester, where a police counter-terrorism unit will take over the investigation, added the statement.

Britain is on high alert after US special forces killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in a raid in Pakistan late Sunday, sparking fears of revenge attacks.

There was no immediate suggestion that the arrests were linked to any specific plot.

Sellafield is the biggest nuclear site in Europe and most of the plutonium in Britain is stored there.

Not a word about photography...

Civil Nuclear? I wasn't aware of them

BBC now say 5men and

"The BBC's Fiona Trott said the men were thought to have been filming and were all Bangladeshi."

c'mon... hardly the best idea to be filming there. I more than get the whole right to photograph, etcetc, but...hello.... common sense?

I must say I agree

Absolutely - Especially after the events of the last few days with Bin Laden - Everyone in "authority" will be taking extra care for fear of reprisals

Not seen anything saying how close they were....there is a lot of coastline and no doubt wildlife in that area. Amazing how clickly we turn from "OMG They arrested a tog, how dare they" to "How silly of them to be taking photos somewhere near something slightly dangerous".

I predict a big rise in photographer arrests again now.

I'm a muslim and as a togger i get my fair share of dodgy looks.

but wtf are you thinking going to a nuclear site days after OBL gets killed?! I do hope its stupidity rather than anything else.

IMHO if they were inocent togs they would have been released within an hour or two and the only way we'd have known about this would have been if they had gone to the press.

The fact that they are still in cells and the police have released details tells me there may be more to this than a group of friends from London out taking a few photos close to a nuclear power plant.

Think you've hit the nail on the head there fella!!!

I'm a white male in my 30s and I get dirty looks if/when I walk past a kids playground on my way home from a walk where I've been taking pictures and because of this "attitude" towards me and my hobby I only take pictures in a park if my nieces/nephew are around so if I'm challenged I have a perfectly good reason to be using my camera.

As it stands at the moment I wouldn't like to stand outside Buckinham Palace and take photos

If these guys were innocently wandering around taking photos then they were being extremely thoughtless.

In an ideal World we'd all be able to go about our lawful business without question, unfortunately the World's far from ideal!

+1.

Police aren't stupid (though especially with yesterday, they will be on alert) - they won't be arresting the press photographers and news crews who are traipsing there right now to file pieces on this story...

and hey, with the press running scaremongering rubbish like this, can you blame the cops tasked with nuclear safety being a bit on edge today:

i dont think the police would release them that quick either. they'd keep them as long as possible to make sure this doesnt come back to them and bites them in the ass.

they'll be locked up for a few days with the camera confiscated no doubt if they're innocent - if not then its a different game

the bengali community isnt known for its extremist links so i doubt it'll be anything

In view of recent events it shows a serious lack of common sense to go traipsing around Sellafield with a camera!

The police will not release them until interviews/checks etc have been completed but it certainly won't be for days as some have suggested, unless there is something more to this than we know.

Someone suggested this will be more prevalent for the next few weeks but I disagree. If you apply some intelligence it will make no difference at all.

They have an operating radius of 5 miles around nuclear installations.

The thing to do, i believe, is understand that things at the moment are "ramped up" and avoid actions that might cause you to come under the microscope.

I think everyone understands this but are Police going to be less understanding around the likes of major London landmarks, night shots of chemical plants etc.?

I hope the police use some common sense and don't over react, photographers could be a great asset to them, the very fact they are wandering around looking for shots tends to make them more observant than most.

Yep they are all fully armed and are responsible for policing all the uk's nuclear establishments. They are a constabulary in their own right.

That's the part that instantly stood out to me as well.

That's a rather worrying development if they've been up to something dodgy!

well, they've now raided 4 houses in connection with this incident, so I think it's probably fairly safe to assume that they weren't just some art students.

Just saw a report about it on the news, definetly not just a group of photographers.

Arrested for being asian in possession of a camera, no doubt.

Four white guys with cameras in the tube lines near Russell Square on Easter monday was obviously less interesting to the press.

And call me cynical, but I doubt the Sellefield five will be bailed as quickly as the Russell Square four.

Contrary to the conspiracy theorists, they usually act on information and it's often right...

BBC says - The arrests are not thought to have been intelligence-led.

It serves them right for wandering around the countryside whilst not being white.

I'd be interested to know if the Russell Square Four travelled the thick end of 300 miles to take shots of the tube.

The nationality of these guys at Sellafield is not relevant - stupidity is - no matter what your race or skin colour!:cuckoo:

So just a few hours after the leader of Al Quaeda is killed 5 Asian men drive all the way from London to photograph a nuclear installation and get arrested?

This seems to me to be the kind of thing the police should be doing in order to keep us all safe.

Somehow I doubt if in this instance they were arrested for being photographers - and let's face it even if they are proven to be totally innocent they are definitely extraordinarily stupid!
