For those who would use a phone whilst driving

Very clever, won't stop them though :(

I agree, but it's usually not just themselves they kill.

WPP/Ogilvy & Mather, got a bit of stick over allegations of plagiarism for that campaign.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/jun/27/volkswagen-ad-in-plagiarism-row

Guardian said:
A road safety campaign for Volkswagen China that turned into a global viral hit is facing legal action for allegedly ripping off a five-year old ad campaign.

Volkswagen’s agency, WPP-owned Ogilvy & Mather, posted a video on YouTube called Eyes on the Road that aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving.

The ad, which has been viewed 25m times, shows “unsuspecting movie-goers” in Hong Kong watching a clip of a car travelling down the road as if they are in the driver’s seat.

The audience receives a mobile-phone call and while they are distracted, the car crashes – the ad ends with a message about the dangers of phone use and driving.

Karen Corrigan, founder of ad agency Happiness Brussels, says that the campaign breaches the intellectual property of its own ad from 2009.

Correct - there is such a small chance of being caught. That is the problem. In car mobile phone jammer would work, but it would kill passengers phones too and require licensing.

im sure somebody could develop an app that would detect movement say above 10mph and automatically put a phone into plane mode or similar until motion had stopped for more than 30 seconds or so

i think it would be a great app and would take the temptation away if somebody did call or text you whilst driving
i know not everybody would use an app like this but i think there would be enough to make it viable

Not much use if youre running at 12 mph away from a rapist

Or falling off a cliff and you need the fire brigade with a stretched blanket at the bottom ASAP.

And if you're a passenger?

And if you're a passenger?

i'm talking about an app that you install as an option not something built into every phone

if your a passenger disable the app and re enable it if your going to drive
simples :)

@SickAsAParrot
i'm sure emergency calls could be built in to bypass the app emergency calls are legal to make while driving anyway if it is unsafe or unpractical to stop

i'm sure more holes could be found but at the moment i know of nothing bar putting your phone into plane mode before you start and exiting plane mode at the end of the journey that disables a phone while driving and for those who do not want the disturbance or the temptation an app that did this automatically wouldn't be a bad idea

NEXT......

it looks like apple are already looking into it

http://www.theguardian.com/technolo...ck-out-patent-could-end-texting-while-driving

something for android

http://www.textecution.com/

not quite what i'm proposing but similar

Anyone who is going to enable an app on their phone to prevent them using it whilst driving, is already going to not use it whilst driving by choice, don't you think?
The knobjockeys that carry on regardless simply wouldn't get the app.

there's always one

just for you lets say 15mph :)
I think if a woman were being chased by a rapist she might just make 16mph, and if you think of changing it to 20mph think about the woman being hassled by some mad motorist while doing 60mph in the dead of night on a deserted motorway

So how will the App decide whats safe or not, i suppose you could have another app which will take a photo of your stab wounds, 1 stab is OK, 2 stabs and you can call the emergency services, oh hang on, youve been stabbed twice already so the coroner might be the right call to make.

thats already covered with emergency calls at any speed the speed would be irrelevant

well yes and no
yes most people who are willing to use an app like this would ignore their phone anyway but wouldn't it be better if the phone didn't receive the call in the first place so there is no distraction at all or put the call into a missed calls list ?

Nope, what if the incoming call is an emergency call telling you your nearest and dearest has just been taken into Hospital with life threatening injuries, im pretty sure you would want to know

what the call is about doesn't matter in the eyes of the law it would be still ilegal

but of course hands free exist if you do want to take calls while driving

i'm sure you'l find mor what if's

Not really Mark, because again, those most likely to consider the App will be those who already simply do not answer their phone, or put it on silent when they drive.

How would you know an call is an emergency call till you answer it,by that logic anybody caught using an mobile while driving will just turn around and say sorry thought it was an emergency call

Doh, thats the point, you would not know as the app has disabled your phone

I just had an email back from Apple about this and they said and i quote

"Thanks for your enquiry Mr Coyle but we just thought that if anyone is stupid enough to pay £650 for a phone which only costs us £11.50 to produce we thought we could fob them off the the Apple Crap App and only charge them £29.99 a month for the priveledge of installing it then turning it off"

or you could just use hands free.....;)

Suppose there could be a regulation that all new cars sold in the UK would have to have Bluetooth as standard instead of an option. The last 3 cars I have had have all had Bluetooth and I would not buy a car without it now.

But the real anti's are against that too, (Hands free)
So I guess that would infringe on their human rights in some way or another

If it's an emergency, then someone on a motorway isn't going to be able to do anything about it. Better phoning the Emergency services.

As for the rest of your line on that subject, there used to be a line in a book called roadcraft, "Nothing is so urgent as to justify an accident", nothing much more to say on that, except everyone lived quite happily without a mobile phone bolted to them for many 1000's of years. You wont die or dissolve and the world won't end simply because you can't use it/text someone/look at faceache for a couple of hours. If you can't deal with that, either stop at the services, or get therapy.

The exemption on using mobiles is an emergency that the driver has themselves, and there is no other means of communicating that.

As for not much chance of being caught? This made me laugh.

So your daughter has just been stabbed in a vicious attack and your wife is trying to call you so you can get to the hospital bed to see your daughter one last time before she dies, not an emergency????, get real or get a family and think again.

We dealt with such situation before the mobile phones.
