i'd rather you didn't accuse me of being a troll. I just find it bizzare that you stated a reason not to buy an apple product was because of their choice not to include an application that allows illegal file sharing.

link to jobs crazy letter about why not to support flash by all means, or their previous stance on refusing flash to be sued to create apps, but bitorrent? really?

I have no dilemma - if I could get my 15" MBP modded now I would go for it without a doubt. And I don't even like Macs that much (I'm a Windows man at heart - the only thing about my Mac I prefer over my Windows 7 machine is the time it takes to go in and out of sleep - perfect for travelling - and even then I suspect on the right hardware that may be possible on Windows 7).

you can get it modded. Just send it to the guys who make the modbooks, they'll mod it for you.

Mac OSX was never designed to be used as a touch interface though so I don't know why people would want to do it.

It actually works very well, as does windows. I am actually selling/swapping two 15" touch screen monitors (see sig). I like touch screens :)

I would find it so much easier having a macbook modified and having 8 times the space of the largest iPad, being able to run the FULL version of lightroom with tethering straight to the hard drive etc etc.

but surely you can't use any mouse hovering? isn't everything a press?

how example do you scroll down a webpage, does it support multi-touch gestures so that you can two finger scroll for example?

To drag you tap and move. Can't remember the others but it is just like using a Wacom tablet.

They don't do the Macbook Pro - the info on their website says they are looking at an early 2011 launch for it.

It's also a bit of a pain that it can't be done in the UK - I imagine it will be pricey for the shipping when it can be done.


On the hovering issue - using a wacom pen, you can hover by having it just above the tablet (about an inch or so) - I imagine it will be the same with the modbook screen. Not sure on the gesture support (if not, I'd imagine they'd be working on it) but to have Lightroom and Photoshop on a Modbook I'd happily sacrifice the gestures!
 
I have a wacom but I was upstairs on my MBP. The wacom is so intuitive I couldn't remember but here goes now...

The wacom detects the pointer as you move over the display and only registers a tap when you touch it.

It has a button on the pen which you can program so press the lower part for right click and upper part for double click. (or program it for other things)

In the corner are 4 buttons and a small pad. The pad works as a scroll and the three buttons can be programmed too.

It is very intuitive hence forgetting how to use it till I was sat on the Mac Pro.

A Macbook with a 13" touch screen instead of the keyboard and lid, built by Apple and with multi touch would be wonderful but there isn't one and given the choice this would be my mobile weapon of choice. I don't need much power as I have a 17" macbook pro monster soon to be replaced by the latest i7 17" macbook pro monster. This is for simple stuff like showing my portfolio and web browsing. I would probably install a usb dongle internally for phone access :)
 
Joe, I've been pondering dropping my mac for an ipad. Most of the time it's only used for web surfing - I'd say 99% of it's use. However the other 1% is photo editing, exposure, contrast, noise reduction, and black and white conversion. I was a little disappointed to find no lite version of lightroom or even aperture so it looks like a no go ;(

No doubt the ipad will continue to grow as 99% of people only use computers for web surfing and writing emails - and it's almost perfect for that!

I find the camera on my 3GS pretty good tbh, also my brothers 3G isn't bad either. I've certainly got some lovely photos from it

interesting. I don't think i'd ever drop my mac for the iPad. I do too much stuff on it, even web browsing stuff that requires more freedom, like having two screens open at once etc. the iPad is just for browsing and injesting media. I create a lot of media that would be a challeneg at least on my iPad.

Yes you touch it with a pen. I prefer that rather than ugly greasy finger prints all over the screen :shrug:

Hardly a rival to the iPad then at all. It's a completely different concept altogether

What happens if you dont have an iMac to hand when out with camera?

yes the camera connection kit is expensive (for what it is) but its a brilliant piece of kit IMO, works a dream, pictures can then be reviewed on a big screen, not a 3" screen on camera, you can then look at ways of improving your shooting to I guess by using one on site so to speak

its all down to personal opinion the ipad and what use you get out of it, I think they are great, they are limited slightly but there is nothing we can do about that is there? Apple have cleverly IMO done what they have done with iPad so they can bring out a "better" version later, they can also add accessories as they please at extra cost, clever marketing yet, annoying for us yes :lol:

I never considered it to be a rival to the iPad just another device that would do the things that I want and for me MORE than the iPad.

why did you tell me that mac osx works quite well on the modbook when I said it was never designed for a touch device. Or did I misunderstand? did you just mean it works on touch devices and then talking about the modbook separately from this?

You seem to be considering touch devices as touch with your fingers! - I would include touch with a stylus or fingers.

I have two 15" touchscreens that ARE finger devices it works well with those too.

I'm not sure what you are confused about.

The modbook is another device. It is a stylus touch device. It, to me, is what I would have liked the iPad to have been but it was not. Both these devices do what I want. The modbook would be better as it does extra things but it costs about twice as much

there are pen enabled devices then there are touch enabled devices. If the modbook is a pen device then it is not touch. Lets be serious here.

Just because you are interacting with the screen doesn't make it touch. Touch is about, well, touching. A stylus touch device - thats like saying my imac is a mouse touch device, since i touch the mouse.

I touch the screen with the stylus. I don't interact with the screen with the stylus!

I am not getting into an arguement with you about the modbook not being touch screen, it is, just not with YOUR definition of touch. A lot of touch screens allow BOTH fingers or stylus what are they toucheractive.

you can't call a pen enabled device a touch device. its nothing to do with my definition of touch. Touch devices are ones you press with your finger, if you can show me one penenabled (just pen, not pen and finger) device thats marketted as a "touch device" then i'll concede i'm wrong.

You have to give it to Apple though, make it compact, make it smooth and shiny looking, make it sleek, give it some rounded corners and it will sale :)

In would seem that most of the industry agrees with me, it has also been reviewed in Mac User where it was referred to as a touchscreen too.

stop being so precious, i'm not trolling. i honestly dont think a device can be called a touch device if it uses a pen, thats called a pen enabled device.

you're telling me that if you ordered a phone that claimed it was touch enabled you'd expect to get a pen with it.

even mark said it wasn't touch enabled when i asked. the ipod touch isn't called the ipod finger touch. touch these days says finger to people, i cant be the only one who thinks this surely? if i am then i'll just have to agree to disagree and i'll move on

You are calling it a pen enabled device, Axiotron and numerous other technology companies, reviews etc call it a touch screen.

I am NOT saying that all devices that are touch screen have to have a pen so your phone example is ridiculous. I have a phone that is touch screen supplied by work and it works with either a stylus OR fingers.

This whole argument is pointless I was simply saying that the iPad and Modbook are both tablet devices with touch screens but that the Modbook would be better for me than the iPad. I would have preferred Apple to have created this device themselves as it would no doubt have been virtually as slim as the iPad and probably useable with fingers or stylus.

well, maybe it is pointless it is just a big eye opener to me to hear someone say a device that ONLY works with a pen is a touch device. because the devices that work with stylus and touch like those phones, the stylus mimics the finger press it doesn't have technology in it itself.

it might be because i work for a touch based interactive whitebaord company and the competition is pen, they never call themselves touch, only pen enabled. also my wacom built sympodium product says penabled on it, its not labelled as a touch device.

i think touch, i think finger, i think pen, then i think ... well pen. perhaps im the only one who thinks this, in which case i should broaden my definition
 
Also I didn't invent the term penabled, or pen enabled, it comes from wacom :thumbs:

Would it help if I said that as a total non-technical person these days, I would consider anything that has a screen that can touched, as opposed to a keyboard, as a touch device, regardless of what you have to actually touch it with. :shrug:

I think it's probably the ultimate compliment to Apple that their products have gotten to the stage where they are so refined that the only criticism people seem to be able to come up with is that their products are beautiful.

A classic exercise in "I have no real criticisms but I'm going to give it a shot" debating.

This kind of comment would be valid if the iPad hadn't received universal acclaim from every single major technology reviewer. Clearly, it is not just a pretty piece of plastic. Similarly, this criticism would work for any of Apple's other products if they didn't have shining reviews. Unfortunately, the only one I can think of right now is the original Apple TV, and lo and behold, it didn't sell very well.

Consider the "anything Apple make will sell" myth debunked.
 
I am sure that all the non apple devices that were just around the corner on launch and going to be bigger and better are taking over.......Oh wait.

Apple supply a need with the ipad. I am thinking on selling my macbook to get one. I have an imac, but the rest of my stuff is just what I am doing now, web, email, all that stuff.

It is a case of iPad is going to be the future, maybe other versions which allow more stuff for the people who want to hack, play and write code stuff (which to 90% of the population is useless)

How many people use a netbook to edit photos? Want flash, buy something that does flash. Want the freedom of being able to do whatever you want, buy a netbook or mac book, or laptop if it is an issue.

Why did the iphone top customer satisfaction surveys?
Why do Macs constantly score at the top of consumer surveys?
Why is the iPad selling more than the DVD player?

Simple, they see a gap in the market, they fill it, they fill it well, they make it a closed system, which to most will be a good thing. Very few mainstream applications are not available on the iPad in some form.

If you don't like the iPad, don't buy it, but don't bemoan what it can or cannot do. It does what it is meant to do and it does it better than any other.

As for all the apple bashing and upgrade, and latest thing, how many have bought an 85mm 1.2 or the latest lens just because people have said it was the best. Based on a blog photo, or what someone else has said. You are all as guilty of falling for marketing of the major camera brands as people are of the Apple upgrade lot.

Capacitive = heat sensitive (iPhone etc) Resistive = pressure, hence stylus (nasty LG cookie for instance! ;))

I don't know, but I know it is easily possible using Picasa 3 for one, and probably a bunch of other programs, many of them free. That is the crucial part in the iPads design, not easily enabling programs or apps, out of Apples control.

It is not a case of wanting Flash, or buying something that does Flash, it is more like going to a webpage and seeing a blank screen. There are one or two websites that use Flash. And ironically some Photographer's websites. ;) :eek: Again, there is no Flash because they can't make money from it.

Nobody said they didn't, though which iPhone from that statement. ;) Some iPhone 4 users had problems when it was released, needing an additional case to solve the problem. Even an Apple diehard must concede they made a mistake there. :shrug:

And I think that the iPad outselling the DVD at the same point in its life cycle is a bit misleading. The DVD player was probably twice or more the price, was a two trick pony (it could play music CD as well) and relied on there being DVD media to play on it. Add to the fact that consumers were less tech aware, and had less disposable income, and it's easy to how the sales differences are misleading.
