For those who doubted the success of the iPad

Well a product that cost $499 as a start price would certainly have a greater chance of toppling something that cost $1000+ at it's launch.....

Still doesnt make it any good though....

It's still expensive for a photo frame.

Did anyone seriously doubt it would sell?

If we're honest, apple could paint a piece of dog crap shiny white and there would still be plenty of people that would buy it....

 Nice one!!

2 weeks after the latest product hit the market, Apple have now brought the iPoo out in white!

not really, they've had plenty of things they brought out fail. The original AppleTV was one of them. Hardly made them lots of money.

There just happens to be a direct correlation with stuff they bring out fitting exactly what the majority of the market wants and the number of items they sell.

The original iTv wasn't actually a failure but didn't sell as well as apple would want. I wasn't going to buy an iPad but when I get my vat refund it is one of the items on my shopping list in order to show pictures to clients and show various portfolio images etc. Not sure which memory size to go with yet.

I don't have one yet but actually having spent time using one (I suspect a lot of the people above haven't) I am actually planning to get an iPad. I ditched my netbook as being cumbersome and frankly rubbish for day to day sofa browsing etc (because you wouldn't want to work day to day on a netbook or a ipad) and have no need for a laptop at present as my desktop is used for the heavier stuff, so the ipad's form factor and functionality seem to suit me personally.

I think that's called good product marketing..... :)

I will only buy this 'dog crap shiny white' if it supports flash.

I think the iPad is a marvellous bit of kit.... I personally don't have one, but know a few people who do, and I've had a play on theirs and its just so lush.

IMO all apple products are great, before you get down to the spec they look and feel like beautifully crafted bits of kit too. But then you get to the spec and interface and it only gets better!! :D

Just my tupence worth ;)

I had a shot of the iPad the other day in john Lewis and its just not my cup of tea.

I like to be able to modify my computers and I think thats why I have and like my Windows pc, Windows netbook and android phone.

Ah see, i'd choose Apple Mac over Windows PC anyday of the week! :exit:

you can't polish a turd steve, good product marketing will only go so far. The product has to be solid itself to become the 4th biggest selling electronic category.

The iPad that is, not tablets in general. The iPad is set to become the 4th biggest electronic product category.

I think they'll sell loads of them really briefly, mostly to people who have a macbook and an iphone (I'll be keeping my better half well away from them)

It has sold better than I thought it would but it still does not interest me. It's this sort of thing that keeps me away from Apple stuff.

How briefly we talking here? first year? first 2 years?

So you predict them to sell a ton and then fizzle out?

I don't think they'll fizzle out as I think they'll stay popular but I do think their sales will drop off and then become a fixed percentage of iPhone/Macbook sales, I don't see so many people having one as a stand alone solution.

interesting, you avoid them because they reject an app that allows illegal file sharing?

so you are pro illegal file sharing then?

Bit-Torrent isn't illegal, nor is sharing a huge amount of files, linux iso's, game demos, I could go on and on. Yet Apple enjoy blocking anything they don't like, until they stop it- I won't be buying an apple product :)

Joe, I think you missed my point. They did excellent research and came up with a product that users wanted, with an interface that works & is friendly. It was never going to be a turd in the first place. They then told the world how good it was.

Product marketing starts at the design stage, not just when it's available over the counter. They just did what Apple always seem to do, make great products that sell.

Why would you want to download those onto an ipad anyway? Seems an odd thing to do.

I never said it was illegal. I said it allows illegal file sharing

there are lots of things they block I don;t agree with, but bittorent is probably the worst example you could use. The percentage of people who use bittorent only for legal activities has to so small it is ridiculous

I bought an iPad on launch day & still find it very frustrating in what it won't do :bang:

Not what it can't do, it's what Apple have decided that they won't allow. I spent close to 30 years designing high tech electronics and know that this box of tricks could do so much more

It's like Ford bringing out a Car that can only shop at Tesco's, run on Shell Petrol and insists on all passengers wearing matching clothes ;)

now this is where the niche thing comes in, clearly the ipad isn't the product for you, you probably shouldn't have bought it.

For the most of us, thie things it doesn't do are the things we couldn't care less about. We want it for just the things it CAN do, thats where market positioning comes in

I don't think that matters- end of the day, apple has made that choice for me- I don't like it. I want choose- even if I wasn't going to use bit-torrent on an ipad, I might want something else.

Things is I hear this a lot about apple products. People wanting the right to choose and blah blah blah, don't they go on about it. You have the right to choose - you can choose whether you want to buy it or not. Why go on about it so much?

I hate panasonic because they restricted my choice to have a toaster combined with my TV, grrrrrrr, I'm going to boycott all panasonic products now because they won't give me tv and toast at the same time!

Think your being a little silly there. When I buy hardware I want to install whatever program I want to help me do the tasks I want to complete. I do have an ipod touch, and its great for listening to music, which is all I do on it. I would like an ipad, but I would want to run firefox/chrome, I would want flash (even if its slow/crashes or whatever Steve Jobs says). I would want to install skype, etc etc. Hence why I don't think its the device for me. Couple of my friends bought them, thought they were amazing for the first 2-4 weeks, now realise they can't do what they want with them and are now disappointed.
