Thanks guys, no I haven't done a reset yet, because deadlines are upon me. I will later, when I have my features sent. Christmas and New Year cause untold grief in the schedules.
It isn't a hobby - I am a professional photographer. That doesn't make me a genius at working fancy settings (or this utmost of simplest one!). I take photographs for magazine features (have done for the last 32 years, full time). This year I have taken a step or two back. A Nikon shooter all those years, the D4s was heavier and bulkier. I only tried the Fuji because of the rave reviews, marketing hype and in an effort to reduce the volume and weight of my kit. That is why it is all new to me and I don't retain information like I used to be able to (don't laugh, it will come to all of you in time).
The focus distance scale DOES NOT move when the ring is turned - and yes, I have flicked the switch on the front, because that is exactly the same as the Nikon system that I am used to. The difference is, on the Nikon you can have A/M set and it will autofocus like normal provided you DON'T turn the focus ring. Turn the focus ring and you take over from autofocus, the lens just kicks in to manually tweak the focus. You have to be careful not to drop the shutter though, otherwise it immediately jumps into auto again and mucks up your manual focus. You DON'T have to take it out of gear to do this, like the Fuji. My XT2 is NOT coming out of gear. That is all it is.
If you leave the Fuji in Autofocus, half press the shutter to get a lock, you can then manually adjust the focus with the ring and take the shot while the shutter is still half pressed, and then full press to take the shot with the newly adjusted focus.

Just to add - you need to set 'AF+MF' to ON in the AF menu for this to be true.
As per my previous post, there are no 'gears' to come out of with mirrorless lenses as they're all focus by wire. The focus ring will turn continuously either way so the only way you know it is focusing is to look at the image on screen or through the viewfinder.
This is how my Panasonic and Sony mirrorless cameras work so I assume that the Fuji is the same if you can't get a focus lock... If you can't get a lock you have to switch to manual focus or if you want to you can do it another way, if you can't get a focus lock you can focus on something else and get a lock and then move back to your original subject and fine tune with manual. I do this sometimes but not all that often.
Metaphoric ones. By that I meant it won't stop auto and go into manual. I don't think there are physical gears in the Nikon lenses either.
Factory Reset, My X-T1 threw a similar wobbler once, factory reset cleared it and it's been fine ever since.
