Focussing XT-2

Apologies for the quality - only have ipad on me any the moment, but...

In Manual Focus mode, If you hit button A (AF-L) does the camera Focus at all?
When you rotate the focus dial, does the indicate shown at B move at all - it’s more evident the more you turn the ring to the right.
Is the indicator at C showing MF?

I’ve also included my AF/MF menu settings, those marked with a yellow cross are the ones greyed out. How does this compare to yours? Specifically which additional ones are greyed out?

No idea how to solve this particular problem and I am a Fuji user, would agree that a factory reset should be the first step.
In the long term maybe you should consider using something simpler or return to your previous system

You got very worked up trying and failing a relatively simple to perform firmware upgrade, something Fuji are quite prolific at issuing.
This snag has obviously got you quite anxious too, must be sucking the fun right out of your hobby.

What happens next time something goes awry, more grief and hours spent reading the manual, googling and coming on here trying to find a solution.

As others have mentioned, a factory reset will be the simplest and fastest way to determine if there is an actual issue with the camera.

It should then only take a few minutes to re customise your settings. IMO the lastest fuji menu system is the simplest and most intuitive of all.

Hope you get it resolved soon.

Have you a dealer close to you who you could take the camera to? Much easier someone showing you how to do it (assuming there isn’t a fault) than trying to describe it. Alternatively a forum member nearby who is willing to help? I’m in Settle, North Yorkshire if that’s any use.

Thanks guys, no I haven't done a reset yet, because deadlines are upon me. I will later, when I have my features sent. Christmas and New Year cause untold grief in the schedules.

It isn't a hobby - I am a professional photographer. That doesn't make me a genius at working fancy settings (or this utmost of simplest one!). I take photographs for magazine features (have done for the last 32 years, full time). This year I have taken a step or two back. A Nikon shooter all those years, the D4s was heavier and bulkier. I only tried the Fuji because of the rave reviews, marketing hype and in an effort to reduce the volume and weight of my kit. That is why it is all new to me and I don't retain information like I used to be able to (don't laugh, it will come to all of you in time).

The focus distance scale DOES NOT move when the ring is turned - and yes, I have flicked the switch on the front, because that is exactly the same as the Nikon system that I am used to. The difference is, on the Nikon you can have A/M set and it will autofocus like normal provided you DON'T turn the focus ring. Turn the focus ring and you take over from autofocus, the lens just kicks in to manually tweak the focus. You have to be careful not to drop the shutter though, otherwise it immediately jumps into auto again and mucks up your manual focus. You DON'T have to take it out of gear to do this, like the Fuji. My XT2 is NOT coming out of gear. That is all it is.

If you leave the Fuji in Autofocus, half press the shutter to get a lock, you can then manually adjust the focus with the ring and take the shot while the shutter is still half pressed, and then full press to take the shot with the newly adjusted focus.

Just to add - you need to set 'AF+MF' to ON in the AF menu for this to be true.

As per my previous post, there are no 'gears' to come out of with mirrorless lenses as they're all focus by wire. The focus ring will turn continuously either way so the only way you know it is focusing is to look at the image on screen or through the viewfinder.

I do not have an XT2 but have the XE2.. I thought it might be something to do with having Face/ Eye detection set. but it is not. When you switch to manual focus it instantly cancels the Eye/ face detection.
I can not find any setting that over rides the manual switch.
I suggest that if a full factory reset does not solve the problem then you camera has a fault. which your guarantee will cover.
The fuji repair centre is excellent and has a very quick turn round, but as you have only had it a short while your dealer might exchange it.

This is how my Panasonic and Sony mirrorless cameras work so I assume that the Fuji is the same if you can't get a focus lock... If you can't get a lock you have to switch to manual focus or if you want to you can do it another way, if you can't get a focus lock you can focus on something else and get a lock and then move back to your original subject and fine tune with manual. I do this sometimes but not all that often.

I think this might be the tricky blighter....I will have to go through and check, but I think the Fuji guy got me to put it in the'correct' setting yesterday - I can't remember. We did so much my brain was totally frazzled by the end of it.

Metaphoric ones. By that I meant it won't stop auto and go into manual. I don't think there are physical gears in the Nikon lenses either.

But there isn't much else to get a moon distance 'lock' on to get it with and with the clouds scudding past, they were mucking up the lock and it wasn't fixing on ANYTHING, just constant hunting. Otherwise I would have.

Factory Reset, My X-T1 threw a similar wobbler once, factory reset cleared it and it's been fine ever since.

I get you, although there are actual real gears in your Nikon lenses that the focus ring is directly connected to. As a result, you need to switch the lens to Manual focus with a physical switch to disengage the focus motor. In the case of your Fuji, the focusing ring is just an analogue dial that will turn continuously either way and control the actual focus via the camera’s software (hence, “focus by wire”).

I bought a Fuji X100S from the refurb store a couple of years back which had a similar problem. It was stuck on continuous auto focus, wouldn’t go into manual or AF-S, I returned it and got a working copy. Sounds like a faulty selector switch to me.

Not sure if I fully understand your issue but have you tried customising controls temporarily?

Could you set up AE-L to focus and take focus away from the shutter button, so basically back button focus. Then every time you half press the shutter, it won’t re-focus?

I may be well off point here though. Just an idea.
