Focus on Spending!

what version is it and would you recommend it, i was going to get a new tripod at focus and first looked at the calumets but would like to hear about the giottos ones.

I got the MTL9251b tripod and the MH7001-652 Ball head.

The reason why I got was because of how light it is, it will take up to 5kg which is enough for me. Its still in the box, so not used it but I tried one out at the show and was impressed enough to get it.

Just a 4Gb Sandisc Extreme III SDHC and a Lowepro wrap for my point and shoot for me today. However, have my eye on a lovely NEC monitor which I'll likely order tomorrow.

D3 was £2100 - good price or not?...

There were a mass of people waling out with Epson A3 printers - think it was a 4XXX series or something; £449. Popular choice - outside having a fag i must have seen half a dozen people bringing them out in a 10-minute spell. Lots of people with Lowepro bags too (Jacobs had that handy bag stall near the main entrance) and loads of Giottos tripod boxes being carried underarm...

I WANT AN X!

Somebody shoot me,

G.

I nearly PM'd you yesterday, but thought it might be a breach of the rules sending an unsolicited message in that way.

Minty-ish...just over 3000 actuations. Small scuff on the base where it was put down on a wall. Other than that no marks or blemishes.

I'd very much like to keep it as it's just beautiful...and opening those 16-bit RAW files is just pure sex. Just zoom in...and zoom in...and keep right on zooming-in...lol
Crispy.
But I don't need it for my work - I'm going with D3 and D3s.

There was one refurbed D3 for 2100 that I saw, most were 2.5k new as Joe said, the D3xs were going for not that much less than online prices I think the cheapest I saw was £4689 or something, defo no new ones around for less than that, I know as I was looking ;)

New video light, 8GB card, ball joint for a flash and £600 in sample albums.

Can't complain after my recent spending spree and the best bits of the day were nearly being trodden on by Mark Cleghorn and MarkyP passing his L with the MPA. :)

Well my plans to go today were put off now so I'll be wandering up tomorrow.

I fancy a couple of the talks. Anyone go to any, Speedlite flash talk?

Well, having just read through the above thread, I am totally disgusted. The thread title says it all, spend, spend, spend. I am sure the kit you all have is fit for purpose. Pure greed, thats all it is. Congratulations to Ladybird who only spent £12.

Seriously though, I wish I could have gone, this is the second year I have missed it as I am on a climbing holiday in Spain, trouble is the weather is crap, next year it will be planned better. Mind you I have the internet and just bought a hilight from Flashinthepan!!

Perhaps the money you have all saved could be given to charity! :)

I had a fantastic day - spend over 4 hours with Martin Oliver who is superb and gave me much to think about. I also looked at every album supplier and Queensberry are so far ahead of everyone else it confirmed my decision to supply only their albums now. Also had a good chat with Damien Lovegrove and looking forward to going on one of his urban workshops in the autumn. Really nice man.

Kit bought - £0
Investment in me and my business - £450

Spent the best part of £200 on Fotospeed paper  , and extortionate amout on a foot long sub and bag of crisps .
Was ever so sorely tempted with a 70-200 vr ii after playing with one on the Nikon stand, D3s was tempting as well..... oh so much to buy and so little to buy it with..

The Fotospeed stand was awesome. I spen bloody ages talking to one woman who was giving me all sorts of advice on printing and toning and because they didn't have the paper I wanted, the toning sample packs or the lith printing starter kit I got an amazing deal on a bigger box of paper and a bigger box of toning chemicals.

I even saved £350 on a Tamron 28-75. By not buying it. Result.

Can anyone remember the name of the stand selling all the "strobist"type accessories? They had some super clamps for £15 and bulldog clips with spigots for about £10. My mate is going tomorrow and I want him to pick me some up.

Well I had a Bargain got a Canon 9000 II for only £229

That's a cracking price, was that a brand new one? I might go there again tomorrow to pick one up at this price.

Went there on Sunday, only had my sensor cleaned. Was tempted to get a Sigma DP1s, as Sigma told me they had just sold 1000 to Jacobs, but the guys at Jacobs would not have a bargain with me :nono:

The Flash Centre had quite a good one last year

That's Adam Duckworth on The Flash Centre stand, 11.30 and 13.30

Went today, spent on the following:

Portrait Pro 9
Mark Cleghorn Lighting DVD
B-Grip

And my fav buy:

Tigers, A celebration of life, by Andy Rouse, and best of all got it signed by Andy as well :D

Must say could have spent loads more, but glad I didn't. Also had a Chat with Gary about Lencarta Light :D

I had the last one at that price the girl that came with me was going to have one when she here the price. The reason for the price was its classed as a 'B' gread all that means is it has gone out and been returned to Canon who then rub it past all the checks tape the same box up all 12 mth warranty as new.

the best thing by a mile was andy rouse photos on a seperate nikon stand

no tricks just quality, composed and interesting wildlife photos to a very high standard.

i bought a 50p old nikon strap from the disabled photographers and a subscription to BJP.

had a look at nikons 24mm 1.4 same price as a d700.the 70-200 vr2 [i like the size and balance] and the 200-400 andy rouse uses i couldnt lift it!

This may have been said already.. though may not have been common knowledge already...

Jacobs had their stands paid for by canon and nikon, hence the two in very close proximity. So they dropped prices below buy in price on certain items... the canon 580 ex II was 299 from then, other stores saying they can't even buy it in for that. Hmm. That was the best price on that my mate could find today. However. Cameraworld were £10 cheaper on nikon sb900 at 289 and nikon 50 1.4 at 289 (snap). So not all items were reduced by Jacobs because of their deal with nikon and canon but certain ones, ooh like the 5d mk II and d700 around 1589/1699 ish.. sorry not sure the exact price.

Spotted some decent straps for £5, optech and a couple chunky but comfy looking video camera ones, the same stand as hoodman and the books.. :S

I personally only bought: Extension tubes, umbrella bracket thingy, some leaves for an old spicers album a couple want me to do for them, and a banana milkshake :D

We did exactly the same on Monday  Martin's talks were definitely very interesting and well worth the investment of time and money! Lots of common sense things, maybe, but some real gems in there imo! :p

Went back and did the show today - although I didn't actually buy anything apart from coffee and sarnies! Unbelievable really! :D

Yeah I went along to the talk again today. Good stuff. Also went along to the Phase One stand for the talk with Drew Gardner and Adrian Weinbrecht.

The only thing I bought was a CB Mini-RC. Nice compact bracket also was a bit cheaper than the online prices I saw (good old iPhone's  )

Had a good chat with the guys at the Nikon (about lenses etc), Canon (looking for a new printer. The guy who I spoke was such a nice chap and very helpful) and finally the man behind The Orbis (James Madelin).

Looks like over the next couple of weeks my card might get a bit of use :lol: new printer, an Orbis and maybe a new lenssss.

DAM YOU FOCUS!!

Too many bodies in tat little space for my liking. Plus, the audio of Andy speaking outside the stand (to accompany the little wall-mounted screens) was gash. A dedicated seminar hall would be a better bet but ultimately, that wouldn't be good for getting people looking at kit....

Bought Sony Alpha a850 with Sal 27-75mm full frame and grip for £1999.99 at Camera world, New sealed stock and couldnt be touched by anyone. Warehouse Express were £383 more expensive. Went over to Sony stand and got some great tips off Sony Advocates.

1st time there and little busy and cramped. But got my dream Camera just gota pay for it now.

Im sure it was Viewfinder Photography, they had a lot of bargainous things there.

Ohh dear, lots more than I should have done.
5D MkII £1500
Lowepro Magnum 400 AW £141

i just opened my lowepro goody bag which i thought was just brochures

quality pen and lens cloth, keyring and luggage tag :)

Bought myself an Ilford 'antistaticum' cloth for £6 and the landscape special issue of photography monthly ;)

I had a great day there - the lighting tutorials were particularly useful. The one near the main entrance at around 4:30ish was the best - I can't remember what the guy's name was, but his methods were good.

Paid £8.50 for 'Cajun chicken' and chips with a bottle of water :(

The D3X was £4599 on Jacobs and I also heard that it was going at Cameraworld at £4k, but that was on the way back home when one of my friends told me in the car!

I went to buy the D3X so am tempted to go back up today.

Regards

Chris

ps I ought to clarify I heard there was a deal at £4k but could not find out where. Will be phoning Cameraworld at 09:00

Straycat, oh yeah, saw that bit - great shots - just a bit disappointed the Nikon seminar was cramped. Rouse isn't as beardy as I thought he'd be....

Went on Monday and spent just £6 on a blower brush.
I thought Camera World had a great deal for anyone just starting in photography and wanting an entry level Dslr. They had the D3000 with 18-55 lens for £299,it was fifty quid more at Jacobs.
