Flickr Explore

I think once you've had picture high in explore it must be harder to get others in.

Oh I dunno, I currently am at number 3 with another shot.

Only reason I say it is because since I've had the two in the top ten I've had pictures with more comments and likes that haven't didn't get in explore if that makes sense....Before they were getting in with say 10 comments and 10 likes but now I'll get say 15 likes and 15 comments but they won't get in...

It's a mystery to me. Mine seem to come in batches. A few will go in, then nothing for a couple of months.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the importance of an 'explore' on flickr?

(not trying to take away anything from the OP of course)

Well, these past few days I've taken 18 orders for canvas prints from it. Maybe that is the answer?

The game of selling canvas prints maybe, which sounds like a good game.

Would love to know what the "game" is.

Plugging photos across numerous sites, commenting on other peoples photos to get them to comment on your photos etc to boost the 'flickr' rating.

Your 'My most viewed photo on Flickr yesterday......... ' thread is a great example of trying to play the game. Create a massive thread, post tonnes of your images in it = increase flickr exposure and boost flickr explore rating.

I am not having a go at you personally, but the explore page of Flickr bugs me as it is an ego booster for people who like to collect internet points IMO

Your assuming that a thread on this site drives traffic to Flickr. In my experience that happens rarely and in very small number (more than 5 referrals from here would be a lot). Maybe it does for other users, but not for me.
I can only speak for myself, I only comment on photos I like, I only place photos on 2 fora now (including this one). I've never even considered playing a "game" and the thread you refer to certainly wasn't designed to be part of some conspiracy.

Well I've had 14 in flickr explore, I don't play the flickr game simply because I don't have time, I'll have a look through my contacts photo's from time to time and comment on the odd one...I post in groups that fit the image and geotag and tag my images, I add links on my twitter account and my personal facebook but that's about it  I don't really get the whole mentality of those that are desperate for views and comments :(

Their mentality/character would generally be attention seeking and insecure.
Maybe they are on Flickr while they wait for their acting career to take off.

Or maybe photographs are for sharing? What't the point in taking them if no one is going to see them? It is nice knowing that people have seen them and maybe even appreciate them.

   that's made me smile, the really sad thing are the people that use software algorithms and the like to auto favorite or auto comment

When I first signed up to flickr it was primarily to allow easy showcasing of images on TP.
Since then I have made aquaintences/contacts.

I don't comment on all there work but I do peruse it through "recent activity".

If I get any comments or favourites I'm happy, though personally It wouldn't bother me if I didnt. I still use it primarily as a means of sharing images.

As for explore, don't know how it works, don't know if I have ever been in it, not really fussed if I are or arent :D

That's almost exactly what flickr was/is for me, I've actually made a couple of really good friends through it though

Uploaded a pic of a short eared owl early today 270 views so far today, 72 favourites. What's this explore all about?

Does it mean its a good pic?
In who's opinion?

No you're not. I think it's a load of [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] too. :-)

I have just looked and yes that SEO has been added to explore, and checking further you've had a total of 25 explores on your account...

Explore is said to be the 500 most popular images on flickr in a 24 hour period measured from a number of different peramitors that change over time, as far as I'm aware there is no one that actually sit's and judges the photo's it's all done via and algorithm, and no one outside of flickr knows exactly how it works...

There should be a TPF SPAM charge..

10 bob for every mention of "I've been explored"" and at least £10 for every post in that other abomination of a thread "my most popular today"

wait....make it a hundred, business choices (yeah right) attract business rates...:p

It will generally mean it is a good pic in a democratic algorithm kind of way.

It is going to have been liked (viewed, favourite, commented on) by a good number of people. Some will slip through the net by being in active groups but that is very much the exception.

You may not like all the photos that get explored but the point is that a whole load of people did.

Perhaps they should have some mods in there to filter out the dross.

This is the exact reason why I have no problem none of my images have ever made explore in the 5 or so years Ive been on flickr!!

It's akin to the popular page on Instagram. Unless its a cat, a teenage girl in little clothing but heavy eye makeup or a black and white picture of something unrecognisable, then its not going to be there..

Its completely irrelevant and doesn't actually mean anything. (No offence to those that do get "explored")

Bah come on guys.

What's the point of Flickr? And explore? It's exactly the same reason why some people enter competitions, print our images and hang them on the walls. It's even the whole bloody reason we take photos in the first place.

It's for the fun. It's because we enjoy it.

Sharing photos on Flickr is enjoyable, getting comments back and getting "explored" are all part of the harmless enjoyment of photography.

It doesn't have to "mean anything". And its not "pointless" either. Stop being so serious. :)

This.

I don't really see it as much different from people posting pictures on here....People take pictures and want there pictures to be seen by other people surely. Yes, it's not much more than a little ego rub but why not. Like I said earlier in the thread from the back of having some photos explored I had some added to Getty, will soon have some published in a mag and also had someone else contact me about selling some of my images. I only do this as a hobby but if I do manage to sell a few images to pay for some more stuff it will be off the back of explore, and by reading this thread I'm certainly not the only one.

Because posting a photo on here takes a fraction of the amount of time it does on flickr to add a photo to 40 different groups. ;)

Not really sure what question you're answering here but it doesn't take that long to add them to groups (not that that helps to get you into explore anyway). My point was why would anyone put pictures on here or Flickr if it's not for people to view them and get a little pat on the back? You can't tell me everyone puts pictures on here for "critique" only.
