Flickr and comments

The photographer has posted it into a lot of groups that 'encourage' people to leave comments i.e. post 1 award 5, or in most cases encourage people to simply press ctrl+v to award some badge of honour or something

Personally I think its a very unexciting image. So you are not along in wondering why all the 'awards'. Its probably people thinking in a pretentious arty kind of way that there is some kind of deeper meaning to it all. I simply see it as a rusty chair and a rusty bridge and think its boring!

All those groups make me want to stab little kittens in the eye. Theyre all that's wrong with flickr.

You have to remember that Flickr comments tend to be "back slappy" rather than C&C and anything that isn't a compliment can (and often will) be removed by the photographer concerned. Essentially a lot of Fickrzens see the site and group badges as a way to bolster their own self image.

Yeh one of the issues with Flickr. Post to loads of groups and it will get bombarded with comments / awards regardless.

Personally I avoid these groups and post to groups I choose ignoring invites to various awards groups. I rely on a good set of contacts giving me honest crit instead.

Have to agree. I love flickr as a hosting site and the community feel is a good thing, but the comments thing tends to become meaningless when groups insist on"post one, comment on five". People are just commenting for the sake of it and I have never seen a negative comment.

I can see why you're scratching your head over this photos popularity, as iGiDK says, the more groups you post a photo on the more attention it gathers and seeing as most of those groups seem to be for the purpose of mutual back slapping it also gets alot of pre programmed replies.

Lovely light, nice low viewpoint, but I just find myself wondering what the bridge has to do with it, and what purpose it serves. Certainly not a shot deserving of OTT superlatives.

I think the shadow breaking the chair is a spiritual realization of the demonic urges within society. The bridge clearly signifies the route of our souls through from conception through the mundane mediocrity of life to the unknown beyond. The rust is upon the chair shows how fragile and temporary even the most sturdy of materials can be when left to fair against the power of nature with its most brutal governance.

Sorry what I meant to say is, it’s a dull chair and the shadow makes it even worse.

I always feel a tad uncomfortable about picking on others work when theyre not around to speak for themselves.
That said, I don't understand the excitement about that image either!

Personally, I have'nt found Flickr to be 'back slappy'.
I have had some of my images invited to a few groups, and from posting there, they've been invited to others ... and I think this is how the mass comments on drivel seems to come in.
To post in some groups, you then have to 'award' other pics in the group with a comment (group badge).
I always look through the group and find images I like, but its more than obvious that some people are just too damn lazy, or could'nt give a damn, so give 'awards' to anything thats on the first page of the group.
Bit like poohing and running ... unfortunately ... that's the nature of Flickr!

:lol::lol:

Give it an award anyway ;)

Im sure when i was learning photography one of the first rules i was taught was not to get your shadow in the photo unless you mean it to be there!!

I think the photo is a bit naff to be honest.

I have never seen a negative comment.

I've had enough :) I generally delete those stupid awards. Pointless crap. So I've been awarded a star or a flower or a baby holding a camera? That means exactly what? Say something nice and honest about my work and I'll appreciate it, but don't reward me with an anim gif.

I wasn't aware that you could delete comments, so maybe that's why I haven't seen any negative ones. Having said that, I don't spend that much time looking anyway. Those little gifs are becoming more and more abstract though, and they're a bit like kiddies' club badges if you ask me.

I leave negative comments unless they're a personal attack. I'll argue my point and leave it there for others to judge.

The shadow is wrong, and I think the composition is all wrong.
The spangly flashing awards do my head in. I think I have a couple some where in amongst all my photos, but I can not find them to delete them easily.

Tell you what. How about an experiment? Leave a negative comment in the form of constructive critique and see if the comment is still there tomorrow. :D

They wont last till tomorrow.

I put what I had in my above post about the shadow and compo and the comment is now gone, along with a couple of others pointing out the shadow.

I'm guessing people join these pointless groups to try and get into Explore as well, as that seems to be the true badge of honour on Flickr.

I agree with what somebody said above, I've just built up a nice concise group of 'contacts' (most of whom I know anyway, either in real life or on forums) and then tend to only comment on their photos.

I wa allowing for the authour not to see the comments for a while, obviously this one spends a lot of time on flickr. ;)

Hmm! shows how much attention I pay ... what exactly is Explore?

Might sound rude but I dont even open the request for contacts, if its a name I dont recognise, dont really see the point.

I must be getting slightly more observant - the first thing I noticed was a dirty great shadow on it

All those groups make me want to stab little kittens in the eye. Theyre all that's wrong with flickr.

Put the kitten down and move away from it :)

Explore is a collection of the top 500 photos per day. The algoryhm means that its not a fixed top 500. It changes minute by minute based on a variety of things like views, comments, faves, groups submitted to. People think its based on how popular an image is so they try and get comments.

Cheers Pete!

Me neither - and I apologise to anyone here who's left a request, it's just that my current level of time and involvement with Flickr is as far as I want to go with it.

Interesting dat, cheers!

I've had three in there apparently. I know what 2 of them, no idea on the third and can't seem to find any link that would tell me.

I'd disagree with this. It depends on what groups you submit your images too. I avoid all groups that award images because firstly it's just spam and secondly seeing all those awful glittery images makes me want to puke. Images that do have all that crap posted to them tend not to make it into Explore.

I want to go into why it's pants but as he/she isn't on here to defend it then I'll restrain! :p

that was my feeling also ;)

Indeed, I restrained from commenting on the image itself for the same reason. Of course we're assuming the photographer isn't a member on here! :naughty:

I like it......I have always wondered and so have other photographers on the types and style that get so many comments. Don't get me wrong, there are some very good photos posted and deserve recognition. I have had lots of constructive criticism from fellow photographers.

Oh and the shadow in the photo......I think I am the only one in the string of comments left on the flickr site to notice it.

I think we should have a flickr group called "Proper Constructive Criticism Only - Minimum 50 word response".

And a little logo of "This is poop, you should delete it. Sorry."

It'd certainly reduce the number of images I have.
