Been wondering this for a while and just tonight it came to mind again.

I am an avid Moto GP fan and watch every race etc etc, love to see the photographers at the end of the race when the riders park the bikes up in the 123 spots trying to get the money shot and trying to guess what lens they have on the camera.
so two questions really

1. why do they use a what looks like a 70-200 lens when they are only a matter of feet from the riders?

2. when you see them they are shooting away and the flash is going off shot after shot after shot, now when I have my flash on the camera (Jessops 360) I take a shot and have to wait till t charges again so I can take another shot.
How does theres go off so quickly???

Thanks

I suggest 70-200 for its versatility really. If they have two bodies, one will have the large tele and the other the 20-200.
They are only using the flash for fill so it won't be much of a charge time at all

Whilst I can see what your saying about the lens would 70mm not be too long if they are only a matter of feet away??

So the flash will just be on a low setting??

The flash maybe attached to an external battery as well. I have the Calumet PowerBlock 900 and it recycles a 580ex2 in a second. at 1/2 power its almost instant. You can guess the rest.

Regards...

I thought it might be something like that, I know the flashes I have being jessops whilst fine for what I need them for are no where near the quality or the best for what a pro would use.

Thanks for that

Does this powerblock produce a stronger flash? Im thinking about upgrading my current flashes to something a bit stronger.

External battery packs simply reduce the recycle time. To increase power output, you would need a larger capacitors, which can't be modified.

It means a new, and better specified speedlight I'm afraid

And it's worth mentioning that Speedlites that melt, are not covered by their warranty.
