Hello All
Apologies if this is not in the correct section - mods please move if this is the case.

I have just started photography and have a problem that has me stumped.
I have a Canon 40D with a 430EXII flash - I am in a relativley dim room I set the camera at AV and choose an aperture for example f3.5, and the flash is set to ETTL, ISO 800.
The problem is that when I take the picture, the flash fires however the shutter speed is slow at about 1/2 second.

Why is this? I would have thought that the ETTL would have set the correct shutter speed and I would not have this long delay.

I am damn sure I am at fault here, so could anyone enlighten me and tell me that I am complete idiot and set me right ?? :)

Cheers
Wallis

HI Flash
If I remember correctly this was what the camera automatically choose it to be. I have ISO for the time being set to auto.

It's because you're in Av mode and the camera is using the flash for fill and not as the main light source. If you switch to M mode you'll have full control over the ratio of ambient light and flash.

on my canon 350d go into camera parameters (custom settings option 3 )and set the flash sync speed its either auto or 200 i have set to 200 and this never let me down you must also have your flash set correctly

Many thanks guys - your advice was much appreciated. I will try all three suggestions and see which suits me best:)

I'm sure I'll be back with some more questions as I try each method.
Thanks again
Cheers
