ISO 400, 1/50s @ f/4 is bright for a gig. Most of the ones I shoot at I'm looking at around 2 stops less light than that and f/4 would be out of the question.
I agree, but it's still pretty darned good for the 24-105 f4 IS, which is the point I was trying to make and a good example of what the lens can achieve. In an ideal world the 16-35 / 24-70 / 70-200 f2.8 trifecta is a winner but as it's the OP's 1st L lens, the 24-105 will, in my opinion, be the better 1st buy. I think that's why Canon invented it.
If low light isn't so much of a problem then the 24-105 is a great all rounder and even all weather lens. But in (real) low light f/4 is way off the mark, although ISO25600 on the 5DmkII might change that
They would both be very happy on those cameras, plus of course you could be using one while your wife uses the other to save d.i.v.o.r.c.e proceedings!!!
