Ladies and Gents, this is probably the first post of many on here. Been searching the forums and there is some great advice (and plentiful).

I am just about to venture into the world of DSLR, moving from a Panasonic bridge cam where I learnt to use the manual functions of the camera.

I have my eye on a 40D at the moment, Canon being a preference over Nikon. I like the idea of having a great FPS rate & buffer as I'd like to take some motorsport shots with it, but also use it for Landscapes and portraits.

I have found a 40D with the 17-85mm IS USM lens at £759. Does this sound like a good deal?

I have been advised that I'd be better off buying a body and a different lens, e.g a Sigma 17-70 or a Tamron 17-50mm. I have an idea about the lenses I would like to complement these (something around 10-20mm wide, a 35 or 50 prime and a 100-300 tele) but at the moment they will be something I will have to look to getting in the future due to finances.

Thoughts/advice?

Welcome, excellent choice of camera if you ask me

Well, you won't be needing the high FPS of the 40d for motorsport, but you will be needing a longer lens, something like a 70-300mm although it will depend on what type of motorsport you'll be shooting.

I got my 40D for £410 mint second hand, and you could easily get a Nice Zoom Lens for £250 so thats £660. I would go second hand all the way.

Excellent choice of body, it's a brilliant camera, and the high FPS does come in handy in certain motorsport situations, i.e crashes, spins, sliding cars etc. As has been said above, you will be needing a much longer lens for motorsport photography, at least 300mm at the long end.

i was going to say that i bought my 50d for £699 body only (Brand new), and the 17-85 could be found on ebay or somewhere similar for cheaps..

that package for the 40d seems a bit on the expensive side..

But the 40d is an excellent camera, and it'll be a GREAT start to DSLRs.

Why wouldn't he need high FPS for motorsport ,not quite correct advice IMO

I'll keep an eye out on the SH market to see if theres anything which comes up. I guess Landscapes are my main thing, and then doing some reportage stuff at events etc. I'd love a FF but they are way above my price limit at the moment so will probably look to get the 40D and then add a 10-22mm lens to the kit lens for landscape stuff

the 40D is a great body and the kit lens is better than people give it credit for, although for motor sport you will want more length.

well camera pricebuster curremntly showing £799 so i suppose not a bad price

i got exactly the same kit from Canon outlet on ebay £600 so worth a look i think

What benefits am I getting over a 450D? Will the 40D provide a better shot or is it just the FPS which is higher? I cant find a new 40D cheaper than £749 with the kit lens while I can get a 450D about £250 cheaper.. Could come in handy for other lenses and a flash

Rob,

There is a big difference in size and some of the controls, image quality will be much the same, I would suggest that you try to hold both cameras to find which feels the most comfortable for you as we are all different.

40d brought from t4 cameras other week £559.99 new delivered:thumbs: oh and great service and help

One of the major differences I've found when I upgraded my 450D to a 40D was the difference in the quality of cropped photos.

Even with 10mp less the 40D wins in this dept.
The feature to see over exposed areas of a photo on the rear lcd and the areas of the photo where the auto focus locked onto and the much better auto focus system are great features.
Don't get me wrong, for anyone on a tight budget the 450D is a good entry point and for those who can affored to pay more, the 40D is a no brainer.

I think he was trying to say that he wouldn't need it because the lens wasn't long enough for motor sport!

Why dont you take your bridge to a local camera shop and see what deal they can do you for a trade in?

My local shop had a 40D and 18-55 lens (i think) for £600 second hand (mint condition) with a 1 year warranty!

Knock some money off that for a trade in and you have a cracking deal.

I've been offered a number of items by someone who is selling up his kit. Some of the prices are really attractive but its blowing my budget out of the water! Trouble is, I dont know whether or not just to bite the bullet and spend ridiculously and miss the opportunity or to just stick to some kind of budget.

One of the lenses offered is a 24-105mm F/4L. Would this be suitable as a walkaround lens? Also offered is the 10-22mm Canon lens so that would cover the UWA. He's also selling a lovely 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L lens but I really cant stretch that far.

sell your granny:bonk::thumbs:

Ashes to Ashes i'm afraid.

Can I sell yours?

Any useful advice on the 24-105 as a walkaround or is it a bit too long on a crop body?

Same problem with mine too ;)

i don't see it being that much of an issue with the 24-105, being an L it will retain it's value so you can sell it if you hate it.
In fact those lenses all have good reputations, which prompted my relative selling comment:thumbs:

24-105mm would be perfect walkaround. For those times when you need wider there is an excellent Tokina 12-24mm (or Canon 10-22mm). They are proper wide.

40D is great camera, but it can't quite do this (I mean focus well on moving objects):
