First attempt Football

Shooting football isnt as easy as it looks on the tele is it? For a first attempt it was great. I liked the little b-roll bits you added in.

Constructive feedback and its only my opinion, take from it what you will.
The framing did seem a bit tight and it was hard to figure out where they were on the pitch, but that might have been a very distracting background not helping. Perhaps shoot a bit wider and crop in post. I tend to shoot in 4K then edit and render for 1080 so i can crop in a fair bit and 98% of people watching it will be on their phone so no one will notice the slight drop in quality.
Shooting wider helps in that the camera isnt moving all over the place, and from a team point its good for the coach to play it back to the team with questions like "why were you there", "you should have moved into this space" he would need a wider view to see that.
If someone is in a goal scoring position you need to see the goal in the same shot, on one of the goals you missed the ball going in the net, an easy mistake to make i think the temptation is to zoom in on the action as we would when photographing, getting the mindset to zoom out to get the full picture takes a bit of doing after years of photography.

What microphone did you use? It seems to have picked up a lot of additional background noise plus wind noise.
The scenes from up on the banking gave the best view, i would have shot it all from there providing your lens can reach the other end, a high viewpoint looks more normal to the average football viewer as every game is filmed from a high viewpoint.

I normally shoot at 50fps only so i can do a 50% speed slow motion replay of any goals, everyone expects a goal replay.

As football events had had so much TV time in the last 60yrs they all follow a set standard and all filmed the same way, its been fully honed and anything thats filmed a bit different just doesnt look right to the casual viewer.
Thats all i really saw that i would think about changing, hope that helps.

If you ever get into filming wildlife you'll find that after plenty of practise trying to follow a football wildlife becomes so much easier as they dont change direction as much as a ball does.

I think thats from my photo experience.. I know nobody wants to troll thruhg lots of action pics so i learnt to break it up here and there :)

All great appreciated :)

Using a cam corder where 4k only allows 25 fps .. I usually do video other stuff at 4k or 2.7k on gopro so I can crop in :) The last part of video stood above the goal was 4k and I didnt think as smooth ?

yeagh its working the zoom at the same time as moving... need more practice :)

Built in.. I am going to look into that thanks :)

I was hoping for some good goal celes running towards me :)

yeagh I was in slo mo on the camcorder so got the good rates hence the bits of slow i did but all had to be shot in 1080. need a camcorder with 4k 50fps :)

They had a remote camera one of those film my match on a pole.. so that will give the coaches what they need for the gameplay.. I just wanted to do a shorter version from diff angles... I learnt a lot and of course learning... a bit pleased for my first footy video.. cant get back until 8th sep for another thoug

cheers for comments :)

BTW I used monopod for ease of movement and getting out of way if needed.. I kept IS on and it seemed OK .. I ma a bit wary of using a tripod and tuning IS off.. should i stick to what works ? :)

If that works for you yes, i guess different pitches will have different viewpoints so chuck the tripod in the car incase you go somewhere where you can get a great vantage point and film it all from 1 place. I'm always worried about getting too close, it only needs one misstimed kick or deflection and the balls heading at speed towards your camera giving you no time to react. The outcome of a football traveling at 20-40mph hitting the camera isnt going to end well.

If you also have a gopro and security isnt a problem i would try and stick it behind (or in) the goal your team is attacking for an extra viewpoint. If you can control it remotely even better as you'll only film when there is goalmouth action.

I have to agree with Scott about wind noise. I think I may have mentioned it before and the sound which is a bit high pitched in the video, not your fault. built in microphones are a pain. I too had the same issue and bought the microphone for it " Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone" . I personally would not recommend it, too much trouble with a dead cat on it which you need anyway to cut the wind noise.
The other issue I had was that damn flappy cover over the hot shoe kept banging against the microphone which picked this up . there is only one answer and that is to remove that flap which isn't a good idea in case you want to put it back.
In my opinion you would be better using a different microphone and the microphone port instead.

as to which microphone?
I find that the small microphones suffer from producing a "tinny" sound when compared to a larger one.

top my Azden SMX-30 v ( I highly recommend duel function stereo/directional) the v version is the more than theSMX-30

bottom left Sennheiser MKE-400 (directional only)

Bottom right Panasonic VW-VMS10 (stereo)
Also had Boya stereo

Yes the smaller ones are kinda ok until you here the difference in sound reproduction.
when you consider getting the smaller two types they will cost nearly the same as the Azden and have to carry both and decide on site which to use and taking up camera bag space
As your ax53 is about the same size as my Panasonic this is what the Azden looks like in position with a dead cat on.

I respect Scotts judgment but I think it is only base on one microphone and not the best by far.

of course it is up to you but with many years of experience (14) and owning several different camera mounted microphones I can only say which I find is the best.

Note smaller microphone have fixed audio leads and if damaged the microphone on useless . The Azden has removable ones so need not be on top of camera, The Azden is powered either from the camcorder battery or 2xAA batteries so you have the option of which to used. Better not to drain the camcorder battery in my opinion
yes the Azden is more expensive agreed but well worth it
