I'm gutted to say that following a sudden trauma - Fingal (my Springer) was put to sleep this evening.

He a was a bundle of love for the whole family right up to the end and never really did become an old dog as such.

He slipped away as I held him and (as ever) he never took his eyes off me.

It's only been a couple of hours and it's probably the longest Fingal and Skye have been apart.

Run free my wee man - I know you're in good company

Bah!

That brought tears to my eyes. I lost my springer when I was 18 and not a day goes by I don't think of him. I was there when he died also.

Hope maybe my Scamp now has another friend to keep him company.

Big hug to you phil. Keep ahold.

Phil my heart goes out to you for your sad loss. Have been in the same position myself so have some idea of what you're going through.

Im a huge fan of Springers, my present one Harvey is my sixth, all the others passed away over the years, each time I said " that's it, no more" its heart-breaking when they go, my heart goes out to you.

Thanks so much folks.

Still so fresh so I'm a bit all over the place but it never gets any easier does it.

Skye (who is a bit older than Fingal) is wondering where he is but Breagh (the young dog) doesn't seem any the wiser.

I'll bring Fingal home in the morning and bury him in the garden and probably let Skye see him so he knows he's here.

Thanks again.

Sorry to hear about this, must be hard to deal with. :(

May Fingal take a place in your heart,
to remain with you,
but it's a time to start
to let him free

He'll always have a special place with you
so please accept that he loved you
When it came right to the end
you were the greatest, kindest friend.

I'm not very good at this kind of thing, but I want you to know how I feel.

Sorry for your loss.

aw sorry to hear that...

Springers are wappy at the best of times, but incredible working dogs...

All I can offer is whatever caused him to be put down, has made his suffering less... YOU have done the best thing for Fingal. No suffering.

Anyone who's lost a dog knows how deep the pain goes, really sorry for your loss m8.

Sorry to hear about your loss Phil. :(

Just seen this over on Dogsey, so sorry Phil, its well documented what i feel about springers, sleep tight Fingal

Sleep well wee fella ,Iam dreading losing mine

Phil I'm so sorry to hear about lovely Fingal...having a little cry for you now......
We have an 11 year old German Shepherd and my blood turns to ice water if I even contemplate her time.....

Thanks for the kind words folks.

I'd hoped to feel a bit less upset this morning but I just miss him more.

Brought him home now and I'm just waiting for a gap in the rain so I can go and bury him.

Losing a dog - been there 3 times. It's a living hell. Best wishes, Phil.

I think this quote sums up dog ownership;

A dog has no use for fancy cars or big homes or designer clothes. Status symbol means nothing to him. A waterlogged stick will do just fine. A dog judges others not by their color or creed or class but by who they are inside. A dog doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his. It was really quite simple, and yet we humans, so much wiser and more sophisticated, have always had trouble figuring out what really counts and what does not.

Its from Marley and Me - We had it printed and its in our kitchen above the dog beds

My three year old is curled at my feet as I type this message. She too is never far from my me.
It bloody hurts, and I wish you, and your remaining dog, all the best.

Phil I know exactly how you are feeling, I lost mine last week same age, bless them

My thoughts are with you and yours

I got a lovely hand written card from my vet today with some forget-me-not seeds to plant in his memory, how lovely is that

Heartbreaking for you mate
My old lab's legs went and she was suffering bad with arthritis
Eventually took her to the vet and she went peacefully in my arms, that was a few years ago now, and I'm still feeling tears in my eyes now thinking about it
Non dog lovers dont get it, but she was my other bairn, best pal and family protector all roled into one
All the best

Really really feel for you Phil, been there twice. :(

Always remember that you and your family gave him lots of love and a fantastic life - exactly as it should be.

My thoughts are with you.

Thanks folks - much appreciated.

I let Skye and Breagh (my other 2 dogs) have a look at Fingal this afternoon. They gave him a little sniff but didn't show much interest. Breagh has just been bibbling about today as normal and I'm pleased to say that Skye (who has just had a lovely big dinner) seems his normal self. I worry about Skye (as well as both being deaf) they've never been apart for a single day since 1999. So far he's good.

Fingal is now in a nice spot in the garden and I'm feeling much better about it all now it's done.

Not a nice feeling but at least you where there at the end. RIP Fingal.

 Hope it gets easier, having him buried in the garden means you can still keep an eye on him :)

Sorry to hear of your loss, Phil.

Dogs are not pets, they are family, so their loss really hurts.

Sorry for your loss mate, as it's been said, they are a member of the family not pets.

I miss my pup if he's away for a night, it's weird not having him around the house.

I had to leave mine at the vet for a while yesterday. Coming back to an empty house brought back some very bad memories.
A house is never so empty as when suddenly there is no dog.

It is a very sad time when you lose your pet, I find it helps when you remember the fun times you had together. I had a lovely Basset Hound when I was thirteen, and I had her till I was twenty two. As she got old she had a lot of ailments, and could no longer walk.

It was a very heart breaking time when I left the vets with just her lead, it took me a very long time to come to terms I would not see her again. But as I said I found it helps when you remember the fun times. I often look through old photos of her playing in the park.

Sorry for your loss Phil. I'v been there twice in the past and now have a nineteen month old. A house isn't a home without a dog..

sorry to hear that.... he looked like a lovely old mutt.

when my childhood dog died (1994-2008), i was really upset too.

that little friend waiting by the door for me though all the major events in my life, first everything really.... first girlfriends, first job, first child. they do mean a lot to us and never judge us.
