FILM Photographer of the year

Mads, that was my philosophy last year, see my Critique thread in Photos from Film for examples... and I rather suspect my January entry is the same!

Should film have its own ranking system and scoring? If we have another round with a high amount of entries, and no filmy makes it into the points that would mean there would be no points for the film section of the round...

I'm a bit disappointed, but with myself really. I entered a shot that really wasn't up to the job, must try harder from now on. The judges comments were correct and I think that I just didn't really look at the image properly before entering it.

I ummed and aaaahed about this last year... I think the basis is that a good photo is a good photo is a good photo, regardless of medium. Whether or not you or I or anyone agree with that, of course, is another matter entirely.

That did happen last year, and certainly made me think. But I think if we had an all-separate film section, we might not get quite the upward pressure that comes from fighting in the same pool as everyone else. We just have to make more stunning images!

Have January's entries been judged? If so, where do we go to be disappointed... I mean to see the results?

Steve.

I didn't want to have a separate section but to have film fighting evenly with digital throughout the year. If a film entry can't make it into any judges top 16 then it will not get any points but the film entries are ranked against the total points so this month they only had to get into the top 32. If film had a completely separate section then it could be argued that maybe film users shouldn't get to fight for the holiday. As film users you get the chance of TWO top prizes so really think about it and get the best shots you can. Steve did very well last year and submitted some cracking shots.

I agree, if "we're" not up to competing with the diji boys and girls I'm not sure that's the fault of the medium or camera. I for one would probably not have got a better shot on my dslr, just more to pick from I expect.

For my part the comment is fair, between misreading the theme/style and not having a chance to reshoot and not having any better ideas any way...

Same here. I tried to make something fit the theme - which it didn't very well!

are the judges aware of what is film and digital, they could probably tell from the look i guess, but do they just get the image given to them rather than the added info.

I've got a feeling they aren't made aware, so each image is judged on its own merit rather than "thats good for a filmie"... of course, it wouldn't be the first time I've been proven wrong.

Congrats to Nguss for winning the film round this month.

Have to agree with Darren that film should and CAN compete with digital. There are some disadvantages using film, but I think we have some advantages too in things like film choice...the beautiful colours of Velvia, gritty reality of black and white grainy film. These things just don't look as good if faked in photoshop.

Hope we can maintain 10 film entrants a month for the competition. The awesome prize of a Leica M2 (still can't believe the film prize is better than the overall prize :)) should be enough to keep us interested. Would be great to have as many film users enter as possible. We know the quality of work that we see on the F&C section.

How would the film section be judged if every month, only digital entries scored points?

EDIT:
Congrats to Nguss for winning the film round this month.

Hold on... I'm missing something. It's even more complicated than I thought!

EDIT No, 2: Actually, it might be really simple!

Although I've let myself down with my first entry this year I am at least one step ahead of last year and have received some feedback. Things can only get better, hopefully.

Congratulations to nguss and the other film participants that scored last month, some cracking shots.

Nguss got 33 points from judges, making him 11th in the overall competition. But as he was the highest place film entrant, he is top of the film only section. Essexash got 19 judge points, placing him 18th in the overall competition. As only the top 16 in the overall competition get those places converted into points then he gets none in the main competition. But as he was second highest of film entrants, he comes second in the film only section. VirtualAdept and DaleLoynes also get points in the film section (but none in the overall), as they got some judge points, but not enough to get into the top 16 overall.

The rest of us get nil points in the film section as we got nil points from the judges. Has to be this way, otherwise we would have all been joint 5th and got equal points for being last but in reality no way of ranking us as none of us got judge points. Otherwise I could just enter a blank photo each month and still get film points as there is likely to always be less than 16 of us entering

i didnt think the film pics would count for both anyway. Is it possible then for someone to win both POTY and FPOTY 2014 titles. I never was good with numbers so it all just seems a bit odd.

Yes, it's perfectly possible... if one of us is good enough! And let's not forget how close @Steve came to winning the overall competition last year..

I am so impressed by the work put in to the highest scoring images in most months. Miles away from my "point the camera at interesting stuff" normal approach. I'm going to have to work harder at thinking around the image, and planning. I'm beginning to think more about reh background and corners etc, so maybe I am learning something!

And congrats to @Nguss too...

Thanks all, I was surprised that I came out as highly as I did. Nothing at all for February at the moment however, so I will have to take a look at the weather tomorrow but it is not looking too promising. First time I have entered into this sort of thing, but the critique was really helpful and hopefully there will be a lot of film entrants this year considering the superb quality in the show us your film shots thread.

^^^ Well done mate, it as a lovely shot. Mine for Feb's is taken and entered all ready but I'm having second thoughts now, can we change our entry?

Nope; in the first month Darren gave some dispensation for folk who'd made some submission errors to resubmit, but AFAICR the rules say once entered, that's it! I usually don't enter until close to the end of the month, in case anything better appears, or I re-think. It IS useful to see the previous month's feedback before entering, I think.

Oh well, its not a bad shot, in fact I rather like it, I'm just not sure whether it fits the theme as well as it might.

well its Winter Landscape not Snowy Landscape so fingers crossed the judges will remember that. I know my entry hasnt a flake of snow in it and judging by the weather for the time of year here would be unlikey to have one.

I was hoping to get a shot today for the next theme, only to find brighton council in their infinite ability to be organised, had pushed the beach back to where it was supposed to be :(

Damn them and their efficiency....:D

Pleasant walk in the hills this morning, lovely sunny day but even on the north facing slopes the snow is basically gone but I think I've got a decent shot barring equipment failure...

A week to go until Feb deadline.

I have a slightly disappointing backup ready to be entered but hoping to get something better over the weekend. Would just love a break in the clouds and some blue to show rather than just white sky. I tried using my deepest red filter, but if the sky is all white, it doesn't have much to go on.

Hope we get as many or maybe more film entrants again this month...good luck everyone.

Mines not in yet, not even on film yet. I've got an idea but can't try it til Sunday so it's gonna be all or nothing this month

Got mine, not submitted it yet I’ve got three I’m trying to decide on. The downside of using film for the completion; is that I don’t have time for reshoots so either I get the concept in my head in silver or I submit what I’ve got. I’m hoping to get March this weekend so as year goes on I’ll have a little more time to think on my results and maybe reshoot if I like a concept but need to produce a better version.

The no PP rule discussion on the other thread has me thinking. Scanning; its one thing getting your crop and horizons correct at the time of shooting but getting the film straight in the epson holders is much harder, how did others approach this last year?

I used a commercial process and scan for the no PP months (and some others)...

If you were able to scan a bit wider, you could straighten to the rebate and then crop to the rebate... or, just do your best. No need to make extra trouble.

Most wise on both counts. Might save up some pennies and get some Velvia scanned properly.

I scanned mine in and left the film border in place to prove it wasn't cropped:

Ugh about a week to go and still probably nothing to submit. I went out yesterday and took 2 so it looks like it will be one of those (if they come out once I have them developed in the next few days). As a last resort I might have one from a roll of 120 as an alternative, but nothing winter themed!

It's been a real challenge to find anything that shouts winter when everything is so ordinary and un-wintery.
