FILM Photographer of the year

If i wasn't so busy til September, I'd have a crack at this as I quite like the look of that Leica :p

Aye, I was tempted anyway, but I saw that and just had to have a bash... no doubt I'll score less than last year, but I'm gonna give it a try

OK, so the prize of an M2 has got my attention. Just went to sign up and I've been a member since 2010 apparently. Well I never...

Wait, am I missing something? I thought you simply submitted each month's entry via email, do you need to sign up ahead of time as well?

No we don't need to sign up, I assume Cariadus tried to sign up to the forum but found out he was a member already.

For exporting to send in. I know there's a max length in pixels, but would something like 300 dpi be appropriate for submission, or would lower be acceptable without losing too much detail?

OK, not sure I understand this. If you're starting from a print at an appropriate size, then scanning at 300 dpi would give a digital image that would print (on many printers) the same size as the original print. (Aaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh that sentence contains print as both noun and verb...) Max submission is 1600 pixels largest dimension, suggested 1200 pixels, so we're talking a print somewhere between 4" and 5.3"? Higher dpi would imply a smaller starting print to get the same end result.

I've been starting from film rather than print. For a 35mm negative/slide, even a low cost 1200 dpi scan off the frame gives over the max dimension allowed. I tend to get a 1800 dpi-2000 dpi (medium res) scan from a commercial processor (eg Photo Express does a reasonable 2000 dpi scan), or scan at 2400 dpi myself (3600 dpi if I want to crop a lot). These scan sizes are because I might want to make prints myself. Then I do whatever PP I need to (if allowed) in Aperture, and export resized max 1200 pixels. I have been wondering if exporting slightly larger might give images more impact on the judges' screens... but will probably stick with the advice!

Forget the prints altogether Chris, I'm scanning a 35mm negative, but when I plonk it in photoshop to do the dust removal, one of the resize options is a dpi. So I set the dpi to 300, then tweak the size in pixels so its within the rules.
I was wondering if that'd produce a better picture, detail wise, than doing the same at, say, 72dpi like the save for web option has been doing.

That makes a damn sight more sense than last time I tried to explain it

OK, I clearly don't understand Photoshop, and I have NO idea what a dpi could possibly mean at the point where you import a digital image into Photoshop! But however it works, I guess the approach should be to keep it at the highest quality available until the last minute before exporting, and resize then to the pixel dimensions you're looking for. I know how to do that in Aperture, does it make any sense with Photoshop?

I scan the negative in at my usual setting of 3000 dpi and then open it in photoshop....do dust removal and any other adjustments allowed (depending on whether PP month or not).

The final stage I do is to resize to 1600 px @ 300 dpi

Well, there we go, my first months entry banged in with little or no hope of being noticed...:D

Well, I got the email this morning saying my first films since last November have been received at Genie! I've paid for e-send so I'm hoping I'll get something back tomorrow. Then we'll have to see if the wild punts I've taken were close enough for entry.

BTW if I submit a 120 pic by mistake, disqualify me as they were taken last year ;) !

well ive submitted for this month. I will try and get lots of months in just to build up the film numbers :) we need to show those boy racers whats what.

Don't worry Chris, I'm sure they don't read the exif....oh ! hang on..

Whoops, just reread the rules.... Style/Theme is either or!! Oh well some nice natural macro shots with the RB67 this morning. Should make things easier the rest of the year.

I know I asked a question about this a few weeks ago, but am I correct in thinking that this month's entry can be either nature or macro?

(Obviously it could be a macro view of a natural subject).

Steve.

Yes! It can be either or both.

Still waiting for my shots back from Genie...

Tax return submitted earlier this week, lengthy phone call with the tax office this arvo about me ticking one box and forgetting to fill in the next box (d'uh!), and now... paid! Sigh of relief.

Steve.
I'd already shot a natural macro before I got that clarified but yeah as I understand it you can do either a shot with the given style or of with the listed subject.

O.K. then. I have a possible shot ready to go... unless I produce something stunning this weekend!

Steve.

It has hopefully worked, just gotta get it developed tomorrow

I'm just about to do mine (my wife is watching that awful programme with Miranda Hart in so I thought I would escape).

I'm not being too hopeful so I will probably send my backup shot later.

Steve.

I have two very different possible backups on one of the rolls that came back from Genie today... which means I haven't yet taken a shot I REALLY want to submit! I do have a plan though... will need a little bit of morning sun and a scramble to get it processed by Friday evening, though.

BTW I'm putting up my last year's POTY shots (all film) on this thread for critique, since the object was to improve my photography rather than to win. That's 4 so far at the rate of one per day. I'd be happy if anyone would give me some crit there. Thanks!

Oh shut up, the lot of you!:p Still no opportunity to shoot the one that's in my head. :( However I have just printed out my two backups, and stuck them on my wall as per @TheBigYin's recommendation. Maybe one of them will grow on me. 23:50 on Friday looks a likely submission time, right now!

Good idea, I'm looking at mine and i don't like any of them. I've got a roll coming back from The Darkroom hopefully tomorrow or Friday, it's going right to the wire as usual

I wouldn't be too jealous, you not seen mine yet. I've been sitting on it all month but not really had time to shoot any thing else. February and March now, I think I may have March in a back but need to wait to finish the roll.

Mine is in. Lets hope for a good filmie turnout :)

Still dithering. Preferred shot isn't going to happen, so choosing between two very different backups. aaaaaarrrggghhhh.:eek::rolleyes::cautious::crying::chicken::grumpy::nailbiting::rage::confused:;)

Been trying to decide if a) I cba driving up past Perth to find some snow b) the light will be worth the drive, c) is there any where I know that would be safe enough to drive/hike too if the weather has been less than clement. Doesn't look like the Pentlands are going to play along and I can't quite get the alt shot in my head down on film.

Well I managed to enter, not the shot I'd hoped for but at least I managed to get one in the mix.

I got a shot in, its completely naff, but I'd rather submit naff than nuffin.... Augusts shot is sorted, now I just gotta not show it to anyone in the meantime
