weekly Fazer’s 2012 52 - Dun and Dusted

Thanks all for these good comments. :) I'm with Trevor on tight crop. Not too sure what happened with the jug, I was working on the floor with a black card on the carpet and think the weight caused a slight drop. :bonk: Will try table top next time.

As I've finished this week early will try and review other 52s if I get a chance

Hmm, like your take on sweet, makes me hungry.

Although personally I would quite like to see the custard on the pies but it's an unessecary thing really:P wouldn't add too much.

Hi John, Sorry for not spotting your 52 earlier:shrug: I think your 52 has started in a brilliant way. I love the edit on #1 and #2 was sublime:thumbs:. To be honest I didn't think Sweet was as good as the first two, but week 4 was back up to your excellent level. This is good enough to feature in an advert.

My idea of 'Sweet', a lovely apple pie and custard. Took a time to set up using flash, softbox and reflector then adjusting camera and lighting. Think this is as near as possible with single light but I may be wrong. Benefit of this subject was clearing up afterwards. Yum

 Like it. Instant custard though :nono:

Week 5 Secure
Decided to try and take an off beat subject for this challenge. Living in London and with the 2012 Olympics on the horizon public transport is often heaving. To keep travellers secure all trains, buses and trams have locked doors whilst moving. Tried to show a tube train full but don't think the picture comes across. Also slight OOF as not supposed to photograph on transport system. Believe me, passengers were tightly packed and it was difficult to raise the camera to get a shot. May try another picture from the platform on my next journey.

Liking the Industrial ones John, great job...My stomach is rumbling looking at the apples pies as well :)

Not too sure if this works as a photograph but meets the theme in an unusual way. I'll wait and see what others think.
I have another idea to try later on.

Thanks for looking in Martin. This fell into place easily to meet the theme.

Sigh is good but not sure I like the bottle floating but thats just me!

Nice sweet shot, a few composition possibilities there. Good use of a black background.

These challenges are giving me a good insight into backgrounds. Found the black easy to get right, still working on the exposures for white although have had success in studio work.

A big thanks to all for your recent comments. Not been able to partisipate in the forum lately due to care work commitments, but I'm managing to keep up with the challenges. I hope to visit some of the other 52's when time allows. I think the standard of work and ideas viewed are impressive.

Like the shot for 'Root', personally I would have liked to see the text a bit bigger but that would mean not having much of the book in shot, which for me makes the shot. So im unsure what my preference would actually be.
All in all though, a good sharp shot that fits the theme nicely.

Honestly? I'm not over-keen on these type of theme shots - just me

Hi John

Industry....#1 for me....shame you clipped the roof but other than that , yup , good idea & meets the theme  I also like the simplicity & symetry of the 1st Industry image & the DOF...nice shot :)

Secure....the bottom 2 images of the doors being open then closed works really well

Root....different take on the theme , great PP ...like it

Your thoughts on my ideas and photo execution is very welcome. Roots was not the easiest subject as Alex acknowledged, and I did not want to go for the obvious tree/plant etc.
I am really enjoying the challenges and hope to revisit some themes again, hey ho press on to the next.

Managed to spend a couple of hours in the centre of London yesterday and Handmade just seemed to fall into place.

1. I hope the pasty's are hand made in Cornwall

3. Two themes in one here. Handmade graffiti and video of the action.

Hope you like:)

Hi John.

Root; I'm not keen I'm afraid :( I think the call out box is too false, and would have preferred to see depth of field used to highlight the definition, or something similar.

Handmade on the other hand, is great! Number 2 for me; I think its a great shot, and I love the conversion.

Number 1 is a bit "snapshotty" (technical term!) for me, but bang on theme. Maybe needs a little straightening?

Number 4 is a nice candid shot!

I'm assuming graffiti is allowed on this wall?!!

Handmade.
1. Bang on theme but to me still doesn't evoke a handmade "feeling" if you see what I mean.

2 & 3 I really like, particularly like 3 with the inclusion of the tog.

However, while the B&W gives it a nice urban feeling I wonder what it's like in full colour given that most graffiti is so vivid?

That's why I like these! My thought process tends to begin with "what would be the obvious thing to do? OK, lets do the opposite!".

Yes indeed, I was taught similarly i.e. learnt the "rules" then that sometimes you can break them and still get that good shot.

However, it continued with "....but it won't always work"

:)

Yes you do have to be careful that you're not just being belligerent! In this case though I think resisting the obvious temptation to go full colour on a colourful subject was a good decision :)

Thank you Mark and Paul for your excellent appraisals of Handmade and the arguments for colour or BW. In this case it seemed more appropriate as the artist was drawing over previous work and no real picture was evident at this stage.

In answer to graffiti being allowed, I think this gives the answer. lol

For "handmade" I think #2 works the best, I like the idea of a "handmade" piece of art. The B&W works really well in this case, as it adds a journalistic feel to it. The inclusion of the tog in #3 takes something away from it. I don't really like #1, I think it's the potential falsness of the claims of some food chains. Still damn good work John.

I wonder how many times that van's been graffitied? :D:D:D

Cheers Rob, as a teacher I appreciate a tick for my work. A few more and I may be able to sit the exam.

I wonder how many times that van's been graffitied? :D:D:D

I'll ask them next time I see them. lol

Many thanks Gramps and Paul

Could'nt get enthusiastic about this theme, but hey ho. This subject was a reminder of three weeks on jury service listening about money. Also had to wait for the drying weather before hanging them out.
