weekly Fazer’s 2012 52 - Dun and Dusted

Age
During the Industrial age between the 18th and early 20th centuries the local River Wandle provided power for milling flour, and production of snuff, copper, iron, and leather.. This watermill was used to grind various plants and wood for dyes used in calico cloth printing. The mill and surrounding area is associated with the Huguenot’s, William Morris and Liberty’s, famous for the cloth, textile and fabrics industry.

And.... I had to choose the wettest day of the week to get this shot.

Hi John


that river seems to have a bit of pace about it...was gonna say could you not have got an angle from behind the wheel so that bush didn't get in the way....then saw the river....:eek: So . ignoring the bush & that horrible fencing ( what is wrong with life that makes people put up such ugly fencing!)
I like the idea behind the shot...sure fits the theme & the newer buildings in the back ground create a good contrast twixt old & new :thumbs:
 
Thankyou Lynne and DK for your appraisal. Lynne, you are right about the best angle for this shot, and did look at straight on but did'nt seem to have the same impact. There are a few buildings in this area that depict age but have been modernised and turned into craft and food outlets. Add to the mix big spot lighting and CCTV attached to walls, advertising and general waste from these businesses and it is difficult to focus on the old versus new.
 
And so to week 43......

Was lucky enough to spend a couple of hours at TP meet Borough Market. So ..... Peppers spread out on market stall.

Hi John, sorry I've not checked in before...

Age, it sure shows age and fits the bill in that respect... I agree with Lynne though, a shame about that fence...

Spread, that's a large spread of peppers, fits the theme nicely. I'm not sure about the wheel in the background... I find myself drawn to it, and the peppers don't have as much draw.. (hope that makes sense)
 
age - good idea :) also the moss on the wheel and roof add to the age theme

spread - lovely spread lol, great colours and a very nice image :clap:
 
Age - As others have said it's a shame about the fence but you've done well to depict the theme in the image.

Spread - Nice saturation of colours in this one. I thought about cropping in but then it might have taken away the feeling of a spread.
 
Thankyou all for your continued support in appraising my enteries. I just wish I could find more time to get around all the threads. Did an early submission this week then got caught up with more family problems.

Welcome John. Promise I'll look in on your thread ASAP. I took other views of the peppers but felt inclusion of the wheel just seemed to add to the market feel.

Change - good comp and choice. Good diagonals giving feel of movement. Agree with lynne that it looks a bit bright to me.

Natural - spot on theme - some lovely colours captured, partic the shaft of light part way up.

Age - on theme and cannot ad to what others have said

Spread - fast work :thumbs:
Very good idea and good depth of colour, with variation in the colours too. Wheel looks ok but pity about box top left. Is it a a bit wonky or is it me?

I like the shot of the peppers but feel it could be a tighter crop of maybe just all the peppers

Age, I agree with everyone about the fence, but hey ho. I'd possibly crop a little off the top and lose the sky that looks a tad bright to me.

Spread, nice pepper spread with lovely colours throughout. The thing top left bothers me a little, I looked at trying to crop it out but it chopped the wheel off which didn't work :bonk:

Spread - I feel that cropping the picture to remove the wheel would take away the market feel. Shot was available light, no flash. Lighting was overhead spots.
 
#1 for me too. Very much a feeling of being together - quite warm and comforting.
#2 is obviously mother/daughter and therefore together but the fact that they are looking away from each other and the mother looks abit tired detracts from the feeling - altho I am sure that was just a fleeting moment.
 
Appreciate you looking in on my thread and your continued c&c. Still having problems finding time to visit and comment on others.
The 1st shot is actual size and taken in a busy part of London so not much chance of framing etc before someone steps in front of camera/subject.
The second shot was indeed a fleeting moment on the South Bank. With all the hype about photo's of children and a day with bolshy security everywhere, I tend to avoid kids faces at these times.
 
Hi John, I also would go for #1 - the tight crop leads yur eye towards the hands which shout together!

Working in a school I also find it very difficult to take pics of children especially when putting them online, so I understand where you are coming from when you showed the back of the childs head!
 
Thankyou Sarah. Whilst I appreciate the need to protect the young, many a good shot is lost when considering it’s potential for online viewing. London’s South Bank provides great material for street photography but I have witnessed over-zealous security guards, locals and foreign visitors attack togs verbally and physically. There are however times when you are urged to take a shot of both adults and children. Tis a fine line we tread.

A great example of an advert/promo shot. I feel the DoF is just right between the main subject and the background box and cartridges. Well done.

together - I like em both but no.1 swings it just because the jeans pockets are very similar bringing the image more 'together' :)

pack - very good shot, stick it on Getty :lol:
 
Appreciate all the brilliant reports. May ask Epsom if I can have a lifetime supply of cartridges given the investment made in their products :lol:

another vote for #1 of your Together images , spot on for the theme ,the slightly close lhs dosn't bother me at all :) #2 is a nice shot & still on theme but would have prefered he child's face in view but can fully understand why you didn't hand around to get that shot.

Pack.....lovely product shot, sharp, good use of DOF....nice work mister:thumbs:

Flow; I like 1 and 3 best. Nicely done with a subject I can't get right!

Friendship; as you say, not a brilliant shot, but it works well for the theme.

Change I like. It'd be perfect with the exposure reduced just a touch I think.

Natural, lovely photo, but I can't work out whether I'd prefer it without the tree stump. I think I would, as it breaks up the lines a bit. Very nice regardless though.

Age is nice, but I'd have liked the sky brought down a touch; it's a bit blown. Bang on theme though :)

Spread I like a lot; can't really fault it!

Together; number 1 definitely. As you say the different elements bring it together nicely, and who can object to a nice female bum eh? ;)

Pack's not doing a lot for me I'm afraid. Well taken shot, but lacking anything very artistic I'd say.

Sorry it has taken a while for me to comment but here are a few thoughts on these:

Spread - Good DoF, nice colours on the peppers

Together - I prefer the first image which I think works really well. great opportunity and well captured bang on theme.

Pack - Well captured, again good use of DoF with the box being in focus and cartridges being a little OOF, works well for me and bang on theme.
