Yes
For Christmas this year, I decided to shun electronic presents (DS games etc) and treat my eldest daughter (she's 8) to a pile of classic games and board games.

My wife thinks I'm daft, and maybe I'm just regressing to my own childhood, but I think there's something about a good board game that every child should experience.

On the 25th, she'll be opening Connect 4, Twister, Guess Who, and my personal favourite, Mouse Trap!!

Anyone have a stand out favourite?!

Out of that lot I wouldn't have bothered with guess who, but replaced it with Kerplunk!

I used to love Game of Life

Certainly never grew up having family feuds over board games though. Always used to have fun playing on a Sunday night with my Mum & Dad

Ours were

Monopoly
Game of Life
Mousetrap
Trivial Pursuit
Hungry Hippos - just for the pure giggles

And others bar game types like
Shut the Box
Pass the Pigs
Mankala
Cribbage
Bagatelle
Push Ha'Penny

I used to love games night as it meant sitting having fun with my family instead of sitting in silence watching the tv and not interacting with each other so I think what you're doing is a great idea Damien

........Push Ha'Penny
............

Blimey. It was called Shove Ha'penny where I hail from originally, but I'd forgotten all about that! Great Grandma used to make us play it at christmas. That, and Tippit.

You weren't playing them propoerly then. Its not a proper game until someone ends up in a barny with someone else over the rules!

You are allowed to talk when the telly is on you know kelly!

Probably is called Shove Ha'Penny here as well

No, we were playing them properly just never argued over the rules, the idea was to bond, not argue. Same as watching the tv, if you want to have a conversation, what's the point of having the television on as well?

Haunted House! (Now called Ghost Castle.)

A couple of more traditional ones that I often saw as a kid were Sorry!, Frustration and of course Ludo.

Our house was like that, except we didn't really have a regular games night

 I remember playing Haunted House too.

Remember wondering if you'd get through the shortcut, or if the flappy thing on the wall would get you? And there was nothing worse than nearly making it up the stairs only to be knocked back down by the randomness of the ball-thing from the chimney. Ah, exciting times!

I can't remember the shortcut bit, but I remember being knocked down the stairs

Wasn't there also a thing that trapped your finger? Or was it Vampire teeth.....

I don't remember a trapped finger thing. Are you sure that wasn't a "rule" made up by older friends/siblings (possibly involving the cat)? :D

Ha ha, no don't think so - might have been another game then, I thought it was that one

umm, it was a joke.

I'm so glad I wasn't imagining it

Ha i remember most of the games listed, great fun!!

Also goona add 'Risk' to the list had great fun with that one. :)

Twister is a great shout. She'll appreciate it more and more as she gets older, and alcohol begins appearing at parties ;)

When I was a lad, I used to love Tank Command, Electronic Battleships and Downfall.

Best game I have played in recent years is Rapidough (kind of like pictionary, but you have to make stuff from playdough instead of drawing it).

hungry hippos and connect 4 get my vote.

I was playing 'Operation' and 'Connect Four' at the weekend. 'Frustration' is a favourite too.

We have 'Mousetrap' but it does my head in.

Cranium is the best 'modern day' board game for family arguments I reckon.

I'd forgotten Backgammon - a great game.

Another excellent, though it is a card game, for two is Bezique.

Dave

I can second a number of games already mentioned like risk, Pictionary, backgammon and even Chess. Still play the later 2 occasionally.

But what about a couple of packets of playing cards, I see Bezique has already been mentioned not one I played but did play whist, German whist, cribbage, canasta and different forms of patience. Think that comes of having a Granddad that was very keen on cards, also remember play nap for pennies when visiting him. A few years ago my niece tried to teach me slam or something like that a fast and furious card game, she was an expert at cheat as well.

We also had Christmas games as town, country, county where you had a number of subjects and you picked a letter at random and scored points depending on who else had put it down.

umm, it was a joke.

999 - " I'd like to report some banter " :police:

----

That aside on the OP - Front Porch Classics - I particularly like the dredd pirate game (which is a bit like waddingtons 'buccaneer' but fancier )

I think that might go and get Monopoly, sad to say at the age of 27 I've never played the game :shake:

I've lead an unfulfilled life clearly

you need several freinds , a lot of beer and several free hours - also don't forget to secrete a couple of £500 notes up your sleeve before the game starts - its not cheating, its leaveraging a competitive advantage
