Favourite game/board game....

you need several freinds , a lot of beer and several free hours - also don't forget to secrete a couple of £500 notes up your sleeve before the game starts - its not cheating, its leaveraging a competitive advantage

Beer
Lot's of Free Time
Friends...........oh crap knew this plan would falter somewhere :bang:

When I was a lad, I used to love Tank Command, Electronic Battleships and Downfall.

Best game I have played in recent years is Rapidough (kind of like pictionary, but you have to make stuff from playdough instead of drawing it).

:bat: I can't believe that it took to post #28 to mention Downfall.
I absolutely love that game - in fact I think I've still got it in the top of the wardrobe somewhere.

Checkers or draughts depending on where you live.

I used to love playing connect 4!!

We got the travel version when we went on holiday! The only time I ever got beat was by my brother when we were in the air!! :D

 it's great, although can be highly frustrating when you know you've only one piece left to drop an the other person has several but drops them all in one go and wins! grrrr.

Monopoly is great, although you need to be a wide-boy and do some wheeler dealing to get what you want.

I also used to like Drink Ludo although it's lethal and everyone playing will end up s***faced within half an hour!

How could I forget Go For Broke! Loved that game

oh downfall - i love playing that against my friends 7 yr old kid.... nothing like fully loading the last wheel so he is 8 or 9 to 5 ahead, and then spinning out the last 5 disks, before giving him the "top gear loser" hand gesture...

Competitive dad - moi? :bat::shrug:

Backgammon

Me too, although where I play most it's called Tavli and is played as a mini tournament up to 7 points and in (usually) 3 variations, http://www.bkgm.com/variants/Tavli.html . It's earned me a couple of ree meals and a few rather drunken evenings in Crete and a couple of local "champions" will no longer play against me due to my "luck" with the dice! My wife's a pretty good player too but only knows the Portes (much the same as the Western Backgammon) variant so doesn't get involved in the mini tournaments.

On the only long delay we've yet experienced on the way back, we spent about 6 hours playing and ended up with a small crowd watching! I also play against a friend for a penny a point, with stones in the home court being worth 1 point, the next 2, then 4 and finally 8. A backgammon doubles the stake. We don't use the doubling die though. After several years, I think there's about 10p difference in our winnings, with me the loser!

At home we have 3 full size boards, one rather nice one in assorted veneers, one cheaper "utility" set and an Athens Olympic commemorative set. We have a couple of smaller travel sets too, one very nice smooth veneered set and one rather tacky veneer and mother-of-pearl one (which was a gift from a beaten opponent). At the hotel we spend most time at in Crete, we have our own set - another cheepy utility example.

At almost every café over there, there's a continuous rattle of dice and clatter of stones, with several games going on, often with a cheering and jeering group of supporters. Usual stakes seem to be a pair of Greek coffees for the players but sometimes as high as a round for all involved in that game!

I love to play card games and monopoly on Christmas Day me and my nana use to watch my dad cheat and wait to catch him out and give him loads if stick but unfortunately she is not here this year so not going to be the same might be electronic for me from now on

Got the Big Bang theory board game that might be a lot of fun

How does that work?

If you roll a 6, shot. And because you get another roll of the dice if you throw a 6, there's every chance you can throw another, another shot. If you land on an opponent and send their piece home, they have to have a shot. If you get a piece back to base, shot. 4 of us went through a bottle and a half of aftershock in 30 minutes, then gave up without finishing the game :)

They have already been mentioned in this thread. Tavli, chess and monopoly. Sitting at a table with my Papu while he taught me to play Tavli is one of my fondest memories.

Oh! How could I forget Mastermind!? My father and I would spend hours playing it. I may go and see if I can find a set after work today and we can play after dinner on Tuesday!
