Farcebook - anyone else. . .

Facebook (and Twitter) can be places for fascinating and edifying discussion, sharing interests, communicating with absent loved ones, planning "real world" events, and reading the perspectives of interesting people.
Or it can be full of inane drivel, cat pictures, xenophobia, political stupidity and nonsense "inspirational" platitudes scrawled across clichéd images.
It really is up to how you use it. Use it or don't as you see fit but choosing to use it then complaining that it's "full rubbish" just reveals that your own ineptitude.

That's really interesting from a business perspective:):

Can you show me the data to back up the fact that no person with money and taste ever uses Facebook as it's only used by low lifes:suspect:.

Because proper data to back that up would be really useful to people who take their business seriously.

(Just my experience)

Please tell me that it's not some narrow minded kneejerk uninformed rant and that there's metrics to prove you do indeed have the secret to social media and business success:).

(Did not say I had proof I am talking about lots of people I know and my experience that I don't take bookings from face book period and enquiries are from people wanting a cheap deal, same goes for lots of people I know)..

The list of premium brands with a successful Facebook strategy suggests that there might just be a use for it.

Jaguar
Land Rover
Aston Martin
Gordon Ramsay
Heston Blumenthal
Hilton Hotels
Hasselblad
Phase One
Louis Vuitton
Paul Smith

(Simply to keep there name active amongst people and to keep up with their competition)

Then as a Social photographer you'll find
all the local schools, play groups, youth organisations, wedding venues, other suppliers.

( they participate because they feel they may miss out)..

they participate because they feel they may miss out

Yes, they might miss out on something useful and helpful.

You seem to have written off millions of people as having dull and boring lives based on what is apparently your own very limited experience. Nice one, the narrow minded award of the week is heading your way!

Should I get it engraved and put in a nice box?

I really admire people who can leverage Facebook effectively, but I'm not very good at it. Some people seem to spend so long on FB each day, it's like an addiction, I don't think it's healthy. Often it's hard to have a conversation with an acquaintance because they're constantly checking their page or others. But it's clearly a great way of staying in touch with distant friends and relatives.

I think the key is to try and strike a balance, and try and block out any nonsense or people who may be trouble. I've seen a lot of stuff which has put me off using it though, there's something about it which frightens me a little. I've seen a few photographers having to take down their business pages due to problem clients, threats etc. I don't think it's for everyone.

the day i finish with photography.. the first thing I am gonna do is nuke my facebook and twitter accounts.. until then they are a tool.... for finding stuff out.. when and where things are happening to photogrpah.. and to let people know where pictures are..

twitter is by far the better outlet for letting people know where my galleries of pictures are. massively better in my line of work.. can reach thousands more people than facebook can.. retweets are the key.

Social Media when used correctly boosts traffic and supports good SEO. I'm page one for certain local searches and being clever with my social media has supported this. Also of course with support from good people like Phil V to ensure my website has good content.

If you don't want or need this necessary evil then just say 'NO'!

I'm with Kipax though. If I ever get to the point where I don't need to use it, I'm nuking it all.

Facebook is what you make of it and what you want from it.
I have 60ish friends and post pics of my birdies and chat with friends and see what there up to, other people I know get wrapped up it and have 100s if not 1000s of people. I like FB and think its just a sand box to do with what you wish.

That just about sums it up for me.

Who the hell do you think you are? I have a right to my opinion and that's that! Narrow minded I'm not and my view is Facebook does not bring a lot of business for me, it only brings messers for me and that's my view.. It is a social website??? What does that mean? It means people can express there views ideas opinions and chat to keep in touch with each other! Yes there are lots of businesses advertising and creating posts to generate there sales but it is what it is! A social website. I speak to people every day who hate Facebook, it's ruining there lives, they pick up there phone and post utter crap and read gibberish from others. We in business then think we have to do the same so we post on Facebook to keep up with a trend just in case we miss out.
In my opinion smart a....e Facebook does not generate me sales it generates people who see my posts to comment and chat about it... You are utterly deluded if you think Facebook will create massive sales.

Rant away all you want, but if you have the right to say Facebook users lead dull lives and have too much time on their hands then I have the right to say you're narrow minded.

But you know, that's just my opinion.

Just deleted my personal FB account today as it was getting boring, full of ads and inane request from folk to play silly games. I believe some garbage (corny cartoons etc) was being posted in friends names without their knowledge.

I kept the fanpage going which we setup for our fishing club going, hopefully to promote the club. We got a few new members through it.

So your 'experience' is that Facebook is useless as a marketing tool, and any blue chip company using it is only doing so in the hope they don't miss out on something their competition might get?:lol::cuckoo:

Can I suggest that you haven't got the slightest clue what you're talking about?;)

That companies with marketing resources to spend wisely, and mechanisms to measure the success of those activities, might just have a better understanding of marketing than you? :suspect:

I appreciate that you haven't found the success you might have wanted to, and that your friends list might be a little less cultured than you'd like, but that's not a universal truth, it's simply your experience, based on your 'friends'.

Other people's experience is completely different, based on experience too!

That's fine you have your say and thoughts and I will have mine. Suppose that's democracy and free will. But frank is right every thing on face book is driving everyone mad. It's getting to the stage that no one will be able to speak, they will just end up on forums slagging views from other people :-)
It's now being proven in USA people are becoming illiterate due to social network, big companies you mention have to keep their name going so they have to be active, I wish I could ask the companies how much revenue comes through face book!! I no the answer, zilch....

I think I need to use twitter more, I too shoot football and think I would benefit from using twitter better.

No it isnt - people are becoming illiterate through poor education.

and on the point about revenue , i think you may have misunderstood the purpose of companies having FB accounts - its not a direct revenue generator, the idea is to keep their name in the public conciousness so as to influence buying decisions. - you might as well ask "how much revenue comes through TV advertising"

Pinster ought to be a good SM driver for photographers too - the key is to get your photos pinned from your website as widely as possible , as it has a much more direct click through routing to the parent site , and thus can drvive significant extra traffic.

If you're going to prattle on about literacy please fix your grammar and spelling.

Social media

A good social media site to drive custom to your website (or farcebook or wherever you put your images on line)

Its possibly of greater application to wedding photographers (brides love using pinster to organise wedding ideas IME) but could also work for other disciplines

I think I need to use twitter more, I too shoot football and think I would benefit from using twitter better.

You probably understand why.... for others..

I will shoot cricket this summer and probably cover 20+ different clubs.

Each club has a twitter account and I have followed them all and in return they have followed me. Each club has anyhting between 2 hundred and 2 thousand followers..

I can't get all those people to follow me.. but I dont need to.. I post that pictures from team A v team B are available... both those teams then repost (retweet) the information to there followers.

Thus every match I do.. every follower of every team gets to know where the pics are... facebook doesnt even compare to that type of coverage as facebook requires people to friend you to get your info..

Brilliant! :)

Thanks for that. Do you find that the football teams you shoot at has twitter accounts aswell?

Well I currently use my fb page and pass out business cards and try and get people to tag themselves and share the photos and/or photo album so the players/team know where the photos are. But yes twitter would work better if the teams I shoot at all have twitter accounts.

I hand out cards and putr info on FB but you cant reach as many people and i dont put the pics on as I would rather the first time they see them they can react and press the buy button.. wiht facebook they then have to go to your page to look at the pic a second time to buy.... not good..

the trick with twitter is finding them.. either the club or manager or main players.... find someone who will then retweet to the rest of team or followers... its rare nowerdays that a club doesnt have a presence one way or another..

I think that was a joke

My point wasn't a joke. He's on here slagging Facebook off for making people less literate and yet he can't even construct a sentence properly. He's one of these typical Internet keyboard warriors who blasts out his opinions without having the slightest concept of what he's actually talking about, then when his ignorance is questioned suddenly it's 'who the hell do you think you are?'

Bleo, come back when you have a vague idea of what you're talking about. Learn how to use punctuation as well, it helps make you look less hypocritical.

I realise your point wasnt a joke but I think Bleo's was - it looked to me like he deliberately mispelled "my" as a kind of joke to say his spelling was fine when in fact it wasn't.

At least that's how it came across to me

I wasn't talking about that little tiny throwaway post, I was talking about all his others!

I think he means Pinterest ;)

Ah yes I did wonder! Well I already spend far too much time on fb promoting myself, was about to start looking into twitter. No sure I can juggle three SM platforms!

I think we have confused each other here :suspect:

I only replied to your post that said

No it isn't.

in reply to him saying his spelling was fine. Saying I think that he was joking. i.e. post 68

I wasn't saying the rest of his posts are joking. In fact I don't think they are very sensible at all his other posts and he didn't reply to my question about me using fb to help our children grandparents get to know their grandchildren.

Ok, enough now, lets see if Bleo comes back to state his point more sensibly.

Same here, I do facebook for 'brand awareness' and another way of keeping in touch [in the mind of] with existing customers. I use twitter for both pleasure and I get business from it. I 'pin' as and when I remember [its a bit 'girly' btw, possibly not for sports snappers, but it maybe just that I have missed that bit], ditto linking on linked in... Whilst you should have some presence on at least some of these sites I think, its possibly better and less time consuming to do one or two of them really well, than try and do them all either poorly, or spend more time social media hunting than actually working. Just IMO of course ;)

I think we have confused each other here :suspect:

No, you've confused yourself. I'm not confused at all. At least not about this...

I don't know how much more simple this could be. Whether his comment was throwaway or not is irrelevant, my point is that he's blaming Facebook for making people less literate and yet his posts have had a profound lack of of punctuation right the way through this thread. Forget about how he spelled "mi", it has nothing to do with anything.

Yeah thats it. I think I will make a start on twitter and go from there.
