Facebook (and Twitter) can be places for fascinating and edifying discussion, sharing interests, communicating with absent loved ones, planning "real world" events, and reading the perspectives of interesting people.
Or it can be full of inane drivel, cat pictures, xenophobia, political stupidity and nonsense "inspirational" platitudes scrawled across clichéd images.
