Do you use flash? Its something Fracster pointed in a recent thread where I was moaning (me moaning? :D)

So now this interests me. When would you use flash to photograph wildlife?

Thanks in advance

Kind regards

Sarah

I do sometimes, not that often though, maybe just a bit of fill in here and there

I use flash nearly all the time for macro insect photography and results improved dramatically when I started. Even just using pop up flash with a clip on diffuser can improve the chance of getting a keeper. I now use a small speedlite (with sto fen diffuser). It isn't much more powerful than pop up but recycles quicker and doesn't drain the camera battery. Of course some people go for the rolls Royce solution of twin macro flash but this can cost a fortune and personally I like the portability of a small speedlite.

Kirk Flash X-Tender works quite well, gives you a bit more range http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-kirk-flash-x-tender-1b/p1013209

I've used it a few times, and would do more if I did more wildlife ;) I think a few folks on here use one for a dash of fill-in - lifts the image when it's dull, adds a bit of sharpness when the shutter speed is marginal, adds gloss the feathers etc.

Never used it but have thought about it, might get one but would need to find out how to use it correctly as i don'thave a dan do about flash

I think its hard to get pictures of wildlife looking natural using flash and you have to be really good at it to get great images imho

I nearly always use the ring flash for macro work and occasionally use the speedlight for fill flash when photographing mammals.

Blimey if Iused flash on my lot I would never see them again, :D or they would arrive in sungalsses  I am pretty sure the Kites and Buzzards have radar anyway.

I never use flash on my wildlife stuff.

Not a flash user myself.

Yup, quite often use flash and a Better Beamer for birds in flight. Adds a touch of light to the underwing and if done well can look natural IMO

Worth reading what Art Morris has to say about it. He's a big flash user. Here's a shot with flash of a kite that I took last year.

Thank you all for your help and advice. I'll have to look into your suggestion Paul, thanks. :)

Thats a cracking shot Paul.

have you guys considered using a rifle, then you can do this stuff in the studio :p

nb this is a joke random sense of humour failure people

I sometimes use flash - and a kirk flash x-tender (much like the better beamer paul mentioned).

Helps lift the harsh shadows in the summer, also used it to get the shutter speed up when I was photographing puffins in flight on farne in marginal weather last year.

It has it's place, but not all the time.
