Facebook (stealing our work?)

No one reads the full terms and conditions to every single site theyve signed up for or use.

Maybe not, but perhaps they should. They ticked the box to say they were happy with the terms and conditions after all.

I didn't bother reading the t&c's for this site, so can I come on and insult and abuse everyone, post a load of porn, and generally be a *censored* and then use that excuse?

Didn't think so.

You're missing the point.

Reading the T&Cs I think they do limit use to on or in connection with the Facebook site which is a common terms with most sites such as this. In effect you are giving them permission to display your images online and also to use them in promotional/advertising of Facebook. Without the first part you could upload some images and then sue them for displaying them online. The second part is a bit of a rights grab but I don't think it's that cheeky given that FB is free to use

Remember, websites have to have this wording in their TOS/T&Cs in order to actually display your image in other peoples browsers. This is where reproducing, displaying, broadcasting etc comes into play.

If they didn't have this in there...you could theoretically sue them for displaying the photos you uploaded....

Of course, them having the freedom to use your images however they please is another matter entirely (commercial gain etc).

Dont worry its fine to rant (in my world anyway) but as always with forums you cant say boo these days without someone jumping down your neck to have a go and as for those inevitable DAFT commenyts like "if you dont agree with the terms and conditions...bla bla" :bang:

if you dont like what the op writes then dont read it or dont comment hows about that :D

The thing is, in his rant he was actually incorrect. So he wasn't actually educating anyone and those who responded were simply correcting him.

I dont think FB are going to want my school reunion pictures, or pics of the neighbours kids.

Any pics I post on there now will be watermarked, not to protect them, cos thats just not possible, but for free advertsing :D My status update regularly has my website in there.

I think some people are getting really worried over nothing really :)

Making people aware that don't always read the TOS.

And if anyone suggests that I should have read the Terms and Conditions before doing so....don't......;) No one reads the full terms and conditions to every single site theyve signed up for or use.

Not everything, though I do take a cursory glance at ones whereby I might be at risk of such things.

Fair enough don't read the terms to something like Facebook if you just wanna send a few pokes to a mate, but when you start uploading your own intellectual property to such a site, you really ought to check something like that beforehand.

Ignorance is no excuse for these things.

I am wondering if the reason for the Ts & Cs is also to do with the fact that, the sites you post images to are public access site. You load your images and they are, by default, publicly displayed.
In todays litigous climate, there is the outside possibilty that an image uploader could sue the publicly accessible site for displaying the uploaders images with out payment/direct consent for usage, hence the term 'royalty free' in said Ts & Cs.
