Faceberk Down.

Facebook is also used to sign in to many other apps and services, leading to unexpected domino effects such as people not being able to log into shopping websites or sign into their smart TVs, thermostats and other internet-connected devices.

This time, Facebook said late Monday, the culprit was changes to its underlying internet infrastructure that coordinates the traffic between its data centers. That interrupted communications and cascaded to other data centers, “bringing our services to a halt,” the company said.

Am I being sold on Talkphotography then? Must be, I suppose.
Its in the owners Charter, we will NEVER EVER give or sell personal details to anyone whatsoever.
And from the private policy in part

By default your email address is not visible to other members, and at the moment there is no option to override this.
Your contact details (including email address) will never be sold to a third party.

I stumbled upon the above. People keep putting all their private info into faceberk, and daily too. Surely TP is not like that, is it?
As above on TP, but I see you answered your own question on FB
Facebook is also used to sign in to many other apps and services, leading to unexpected domino effects
I've noticed increasingly, being asked / offered to sign in, in various places, via FB...
Errrr no thanks!

That's something else we've never had. I can't see that changing. :)

If you build a business on a social media platform, you have to rely on them always honouring your pages. They could take them off you at anytime, if they wish.
.... The trick is to behave and not give them reason to take you down. You obviously have no experience of how it works. Do you do everything thinking negatively and living in fear of the worst case scenario happening for you?

In my daughter's case which I gave as a prime example of building success via using Instagram, she has her own independent website (which I also linked). Oh, but that could go down permanently as well, I hear you say - Try to Think Positive!

Some people just can't see it, most who use social media really do think they are customers.
.... That's simply not true! Social media users know they are users - It's that simple.

I had a long conversation with my wife too. Seems like a nice lady.

It’s not the adverts on FB that they make their money from its selling your data to other companies that’s profitable.

They mine your contacts and even if you block them on that they still get them because they mine your contact’s contacts :(.

i hardly use FB but each time I go there they have suggestions of ”people you may know” and more often than not they are correct, though I don’t take up their suggestions.
.... So what! Some people are paranoic about their perceived privacy. If people don't like Facebook etc then they don't have to use it and they can get on with the rest of their life without bitching about what they don't appreciate.

Besides, you don't even have to see the ads if you use blockers and even if/when you do see any ads (on YouTube for example which are difficult to block unless you pay) you are not forced to act. Everyone is quite capable of deciding for themselves what they do or don't want to do online.

Thanks to Facebook recently I was able to contact a very good school friend from 60 years ago. We met up and had a great day together on a Heritage Steam Railway. I have made lots of very useful contacts and friends via Facebook and, to a lesser degree, Instagram as well < Even this morning on a local beach while I was photographing surfer friends! How did I get the shout that surf was up? < Facebook Messenger! It's easier than phone texting.

I kind of envy you, you can't miss that, which you never had.
I watch very little TV.
There is far more on there that is not worth watching, than anything worth watching.

wow so much hate
i love FB and especially wotsapp its a great and easy funny way to keep in touch with all my friends that just couldnt happen over the telephone
i find myself stuck on "sites" for days where i cannot make a telephone voice call without suspicion, but can use my phone for wotsapp and facebook pretty liberally.
what a load of old fogies some of you all are.

A couple of years ago I spent four 14-hr sessions in a row on my own in a hide in the middle of a forest in Finland to photograph Bears and other wildlife. Others in our small party of wildlife photographers were in their own hides too. WhatsApp was invaluable! "A Wolverine has just passed me and is heading towards your righthand side" etc etc.

FFS why all the hate!?

I won't even bother to reply to a certain person on here, others have already put him straight. :)

.... Very much so but the progs which are worth watching are often excellent watching - Documentaries, dramas, films, and more.

Agree with Robin WhatsApp is brilliant
So handy for friends and family and you can send snaps to people easily and for free

.... If you are referring to me as I suspect you are (please correct me if I am wrong), then what you call "putting straight" is not necessarily what others in the wider world think is "straight". By using this term you are implying that your mind is both closed and intolerant of other's different points of view and opinions. That's a shame, but so be it.

Facebook and Instagram etc have their bad points and also their good points. Just like people, eh? :)

TBH I've not seen a decent film on TV for a very long time, mostly, it seems, they have been replaced by reality TV
Skating on ice in the jungle, naked, while having a bake off ( is that a euphemism  ) and other exciting programs :)

NOW TV or NETFLIX are my go to, IF I'm in the mood for a film (y)

Yes I detest all that sort of rubbish as well we also watch films on Netflix
To be honest I wouldn’t miss telly if it disappeared, my wife went away for a week and I didn’t even turn the telly on was nice not to have it on

my wife went away for a week and I didn’t even turn the telly on
I never do that either, same goes for the phone ..
Well maybe once a day just to make sure the sky hasn't fallen in...

1. As I’ve said it not the ads on FB!

2. Not liking FB is to do with the power it has and the way it has worked to maximise eg Trump, anti-vaxxers and so on.

3. Yes, I too some years back found someone I had lost contact with, so I don’t deny it can be useful but I am against monopolies of any kind whether Business, Unions, or Political :(. From what you’ve written about yourself on TP, I’m surprise that you can’t see that!

I've seriously considered changing my FB name to "benefits"
So when people add me, they truly become ""friends with benefits"

:D

As I mentioned earlier FB have been slipping spammy messages into the chat ‘stream’ on WhatsApp but it seems only on my iPad (in a browser) not on my iphone.! They look like this:

1633437242880.jpeg

They disappear after some hours. They seem to me to be a tryout for slipping ads into the stream ;(.

They are still promising to bring out a tablet version so it could be related to that. They’ve been promising for years, I guess they are short of resources :).

I guess they are short of resources :).
Well obviously, as someone forgot to put a couple of bob in the meter, hence the outage yesterday.

what a load of old fogies some of you all are.

What you're describing is the personal benefit sides of social media platform, and most of that can be done without FB or in private groups. That isn't what people hate on at all .... it's the bitching, gossip, attention seeking and often bullying they witness on there daily. I don't see anything 'old fogie' about that, is it not only old fogies who even use that expression? :ROFLMAO:

can use my phone for wotsapp
I use WhatsApp video calling/messaging all the time but FaceTime is better quality (mostly Apple stuff only) and would use other apps (Signal, Spike Email, etc) if I could persuade stick-in-the-mud folk like you to branch out :(.

It doesn’t blind me to FB faults!

.... Fair enough but none of the ads nor the power bothers me.

I am very open about myself and I don't care what other people think of me - I like me! :D

Everything and everybody has their faults, including Facebook. There's no such thing as a perfect camera nor lens so just exploit and enjoy what you have.

I discovered I have an instagram account I never knew about, put a couple of phone pics on it, too much hassle
Seems I had quite a few followers when there weren't any pictures, perhaps they will all leave now :)

.... Fair enough but none of the ads nor the power bothers me.

Again, it’s not the ads on FB! The problem is mainly that how their algorithms work to maximise value for selling the data to advertisers has an adverse effect on society because the ancillary effect is of promoting untrue posts.
I am very open about myself and I don't care what other people think of me - I like me! :D

You may as well say (insert your favourite villain/dictator here) had his faults but … . :(.

The problem with Facebook is their hegemonistic position. Compare the state of social media to email: email was developed as an open standard that anyone could implement so we now have lots of email providers, a choice of email client software, apps, etc. Social media could be like that, there could be an open, interchangable standard so you could use Facebook and I could use Twitter and we could interact without having multiple log-ins etc. but these companies actively work tp prevent that kind of standardisation.

The same with WhatsApp/Signal/Telegram

It’s true about Facebook but WhatsApp and the other message apps have been widely used by opponents of those dictators too. People are responsible for all too by blindly accepting the one (or a few) app :( when there is lots of choice, not to mention email.
It beats me,too, why people just can't use Email and for face to face Zoom. Job done.

I'd say there was a big difference between opponents of a brutal dictatorship using the platforms to organise demos and the regime using it to ID opponents by requiring the companies to install 'security software but I take your point that both sides can use the platforms.

Thoughts and prayers going out to Mark Zuckerberg tonight.
God knows how many Millions £££ he's losing through farmed info.
Stay strong Mark.

:D
I heard a figure of $7billion..surely not ?

I just checked. “Last year’s ad revenue (for Facebook’s sites) was $84.2bn. So, for every minute it’s down, they’re losing around $160,000. Or, $2,670 per second,”

2020 profit. $29.14 billion

In the fourth quarter of 2020, Facebook net income increased by 43 percent from the previous quarter, reaching the record-high amount for the evaluated period of 11.2 billion U.S. dollars. Facebook's most recent annual net income amounted to $29.14 billion.

It beats me,too, why people just can't use Email and for face to face Zoom. Job done.
- Email is best for letter writing and takes time to be seen, read, and replied to.

- Zoom is good for group conference. Facetime is the same but is usually more one-to-one than group.

- Texting is for short messaging when expecting either instant or fast replies and has much less content than email.

- Instagram DMs are similar to texts but aren't so easily referred to and don't thread their exchanges so well.

- Facebook Messenger offers a combination of all of the above and now also offers the option of video calls like Facetime.

A factor which influences your choice is whether for business or pleasure purposes.

So, it's Horses-for-Courses and depends on what you want to communicate and the type of response you want or need in each case. Facebook Messenger fits into my lifestyle the best. Facebook having an outage for 6 hours last night wasn't a problem - It's only ever a matter of a few hours until it always gets fixed. It's just like a domestic power cut. Facebook Messenger also going down was more inconvenient in my case but again, it always bounces back soon enough.

t***ter is much more political and attracts more ranting and circulation of questionable truths than other social media. In fact I would not describe it as social interaction at all but as more networking information. Unfortunately mostly negative rather than positive networking of information. Just like newspapers, none of it is necessarily the truth it is made out to be.

The ’Chat’ type of interface is very nice for ‘conversations and easier to follow than with email — though you can do it in email in Spike which I use

and really like though it’s principally a paid service with free version and you can do group “Chats” in it and video calls I think. WhatsApp/FaceTime/Signal/Telegram are all good for informal group messaging so I have one with various relatives in eg Sheffield, Kent, Perth WA, Melbourne VIC in it which works in a way that email doesn’t. Though I’m basically an ‘email person’.

As @sirch says, there’s nothing wrong in principle with FB except it‘s hegemony :(,

I won't quote from those who can't see what's wrong with Facebook and its lack of ethics as there are a few who have posted to that effect but I assume they will no doubt read this post.I suggest they make some effort to find out what evidence is being given by the whistleblower. There's a lot more to FB and its associate platforms than meets the eye and it's pretty ugly.

This afternoon I watched the whistleblower ex FB employee/product manager Frances Haugen (MBA-Harvard) giving evidence to Congress. Each one of those questioning her thanked her for her bravery. She said she's done it even though she knows that quote "Facebook could destroy me" She left with copies of tens of thousands of documents proving her allegations. She's done this because other staff members have raised their concerns to no avail. The mantra is. 'Growth at all costs' She opened her evidence saying..

“I’m here today because I believe Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division and weaken our democracy. The company’s leadership knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer, but won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their astronomical profits before people.” She added that Facebook was “buying its profits with our safety”

Mark Zuckerberg made himself available to the media and Congress.as mentioned in my previous post, over the Cambridge Analytica scandal but this time he's out sailing in the Pacific with his wife and child. The modus operandi of FB when in trouble is to sit back, with a few comments thrown out now and then and wait for the issue to blow over. It's not going to happen this time, there's no way this will blow over because it's not about adults, politicians and targetting voters or Trump and January 6th it's about children and their safety. Senator Richard Blumenthal sent MZ a list of questions and now knows he received misleading answers. Bluenthal ,as Attorney General for Connecticut, prosecuted the tobacco industry and he said that this is Facebook's 'tobacco moment'

These are some of the issues she spoke about. I expect a full transcript will become available at some point.

No-one under 13 is allowed to sign up yet they're aware that kids will give false ages but they have a system of backtracking which can establish an age and it intentionally targets teenagers and children under 13. At present it's in the process of studying 8 year olds for targeting re their 'Messenger Kids' app. A current employee ( the Global Safety officer,I think) had been asked at a previous hearing how they get details of young kids and she said that they get permission from parents. Facebook's own researchers came back to them with evidence of the harm that the algorithms were doing yet the Global Safety office, when giving evidence to a previous hearing, minimised the findings. Teenagers are allowed to set up secret accounts unbeknown to their parents. Seems the longer a user is actively on the platform the more money FB makes. Quite how,I have no idea. Comes back to adds and viewing time,I assume.

1.5 billion user details are being sold on a hacker's forum. Frances Haugen said that Facebook knew it steered young users towards damaging content...especially anorexia-related forums and that its Instagram app was like cigarettes for under-18s.and that the company did not have enough staff to keep the platform safe and was literally fanning ethnic violence in developing countries. In 2018 they were told about the effect that algorithms containing hate information were having in relation to the murderous campaign against the Rohingya of Myanmar and FB did nothing and it's happening all over again but this time in Ethiopia.

This statistic is awful.13% of UK youngsters and 6% of US youngsters can directly trace their desire to commit suicide back to FB and it's other platforms. Another issue was bullying which takes place at school and whereas in pre social media days kids got home and were isolated from it, it's now with them at home and worse, they're so-called friends post nasty comments. This sort of contact has lead to suicide.

The algorithms even target house sales adverts in certain locations to white's only..ie not to black or Hispanic people. They don't have the same spread for non-whites as they do for white people. She gave an example of how dangerous some ads are and she showed three on a screen advertising quote 'A party like no other' and the background to the lettering were prescription drugs,so the party was about abuse of prescription drugs. Another.. 'Find a love partner' and it was aimed at 13-17 year olds. Another promoting anerexia-related forums.Haugen said that most likely a human hadn't seen these ads..all done by AI tailored to age, gender and location.

She was asked what FB would fear most from the authorities and said...oversight of the algorithms. She said that FB will not change unless forced to. Also, amending, not nullifying, legislation that makes them liable for the consequences of their content because ,at present, section 230 of a 1996 Act protects social media companies from the consequences of their content. They'd do that to negate the protection of the First Amendment re free speech and to avoid the lawyers of FB citing that to negate any action.

Whilst Haugen was giving evidence FB was putting out ,in real time, information to the effect that she couldn't know about some of the evidence she was giving as she didn't and hadn't worked in the relevant departments. However, amongst all the material she has she has covered that aspect, probably knowing FB would say that..

During the hearing Senator Bloomenthal looked at the camera and said "Mark Zuckerberg..if you're watching this we're coming for you and you either work with us or without us..your choice" He described FB as "a monster'. Senator Ed Markey said “Here’s my message for Mark Zuckerberg: your time of invading our privacy, promoting toxic content in preying on children and teens is over. Congress will be taking action. We will not allow your company to harm our children and our families and our democracy, any longer.”

I thought of you when I read a piece in the NYT today giving a definition of some of FB‘ techniques such as Engagement-based ranking. Oh, It seems they were thinking of you too:

Facebook and other social media platforms use engagement-based ranking to determine which content they believe is most relevant to Robin’s interests. After taking into account Robin’s likes, shares and comments, as well as Robin’s past interactions with similar content, the algorithms powering Robin’s Facebook’s news feed will place posts in front of Robin. This is in contrast to a chronological ranking that simply is based on when content was posted or sent.

;) :)

Yes, I’ve just been reading the NYT report of the hearing, she was very well received and the NYTsaid that Senators, for once, asked relevant questions and seemed to have overcome their earlier shameful ignorance of how FB works.

As @sirch says, there’s nothing wrong in principle with FB except it‘s hegemony :(,
As you can guess, Richard..many people, including Sirch, after hearing or being made aware of the evidence given by the whistleblower, Frances Haugen, might conclude that there is, in fact, a lot more of a problem with FB and it's associate platforms other than just hegemony.

.... If this refers to advertisements content, I don't see any at all because I only view Facebook on my desktop Mac, not iPhone or iPad, and I use very effective adblocking software in my Apple Safari browser. I don't see any newsfeeds, only notifications of replies to posts I am contributing to.

But as said earlier, I don't care who knows my online activities or what they do with that information.

No, it doesn’t refer to ads at all but to everything else. Not sure why you are so hung up on ads in FB because none of this is about those, if they even exist — I don't use it enough to be sure :(.
