F1 season 2016

Great race let down by that stupid qualifying It even ruined the fantastic lap by Lewis beating the lap record, faster than the V10's
Now the knobs are talking aggregate laps for qually , thats right they have to have there fastest 2 laps added together and divided by 2
Its time the men in white coats arrived and carted off the numpties
When the racing was being critisised in 2015 the qualifying was at least exciting so cant they just leave it alone

I can't remember the first qualifying ever being as exciting as in Australia or indeed, this time.

However the final qualifying is a total waste of space!

Well if they get there way it will be in the format of 2015 so the knock out will be out

Hass way into F1 will be blocked by the teams as they were moaning before they scored points so I dont hold out much hope if someone else tries this way

Quali is rubbish - go back to the previous version - it worked.
Haas are great.
Nico is on fire
Lewis did really well today considering.
Felt sorry for Seb and JB.

Decent race in the end, lots of battles throughout the field. Felt sorry for Lewis and losing Seb before the start was a pity.
As for the qually, yes, it's crap but I fear it may stay for a bit. They keep having meetings and the only options on the table for the teams to vote for are more ridiculous than this knockout farce. At least one team will veto the current option of aggregate qually. Not sure if going back to 2015 qually will ever be on the table as an option to vote for.

Liked the chat with Toto Wolff before the start! Thought Susie was good value too. Interesting that the loss of endplates seemed to make next to sod all difference to them.

I thought she improved Steve Jones as well
They tried the aggregate thing in qually 11 years ago (although I cant remember it) and it was a failure then
Had it been applied at Bahrain even though Lewis broke the lap record with the fastest lap he would have been third on the grid
Seb reckons driving with one eye closed is better than this (his words) Sh1t so we might get it dumped on us
All working up to a big bust up on April 30th when bernie tries his best to get an independant engine in the mix again

Ex drivers are even worse than current ones, especially when they went on to team ownership and beyond...

Just seen on an advert... Quest channel has live rally cross.
Might be an alternative to f1

Ferrari sneaking a cheat in or what ?

Hmm, Ferrari International Assistance at work?

Under normal circumstances the message would not be one the FIA would allow, but Autosport can confirm Ferrari has provided the FIA with an entirely satisfactory explanation.

Maybe something on the lines of "we'll give a bigger donation to the FIA/Ecclestone Christmas funds this year" :p

Oh you of little faith
Wait until the 30th of this month and they will all be hating each other again

Hallelujah, and about time.

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council has today officially today approved, via e-vote, the decision to revert to last season’s qualification format for the remainder of the 2016 season.

The format, whereby the slowest six cars are eliminated at the end of the first two qualifying sessions before a final ten-car shootout for pole in Q3, will return for this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.

Now April 30th is the next row
Teams dont want more downforce as this will limit overtaking
Pirelli arnt sure about wider tyres and need a 2015 car with 2017 down force to test their product, estimated cost 10 million the question is who pays
Again the fia / ecclestone are not listening to the engineers, fans, drivers and probably no one else
Do they want more down force on health and safety grounds? less overtaking less chance of accidents I can see very little reason why they are trying to introduce something that will limit track excitement / a race

Ground effect/massive downforce is great, right up to the point where it's lost, at which point the car becomes a projectile.

Facts From Previous Race

Win number 16 for Nico Rosberg means he has now taken as many grand prix victories as Stirling Moss. In terms of race wins, the pair are the most successful drivers of all time never to have won a world championship. Both scored their first wins with Mercedes but while that was Moss’s only victory for the team all of Rosberg’s victories have come for the three-pointed star.

Rosberg marked the tenth anniversary of his F1 debut by winning the Bahrain Grand Prix for the first time in his career. This was Rosberg’s fifth consecutive victory, making him only their eighth driver in world championship history to do so.

Just three years ago this was a feat only five drivers had achieved (Mansell, Clark, Schumacher, Brabham, Ascari). Since then Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and now Rosberg have joined the five-in-a-row club.

With Lewis Hamilton slipping to third place Mercedes missed out on their chance to become the first team to score six consecutive one-two finishes. However they did lock out the front row of the grid for the eighth race running and take their fourth consecutive Bahrain Grand Prix pole position.

Hamilton’s 51st career pole position means he is still has a chance of reaching Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 68 before the end of the season. This was his second Bahrain pole.

His 1’29.493 lap was the fastest ever seen in Bahrain, breaking Mark Webber’s 2005 record by 34 thousandths of a second. Webber set the time during fourth practice for the 2005 race in a Williams FW27 with a V10 BMW engine.

Starts remain a problem for Hamilton, however. He has given away 11 places on lap one in the first two races of the year combined – just one less than he lost in all 19 of his starts last year. His 2016 record so far reads two pole positions, one lap led and zero wins – something which will surely change soon.

Kimi Raikkonen split the Mercedes drivers on the podium, finishing second for the fourth time in the last five Bahrain Grands Prix. He has now taken eight podiums in his 11 Bahrain Grand Prix appearances without winning the race. That matches Fernando Alonso’s feat of taking eight podiums in Brazil without a victory.

Stoffel Vandoorne became the 75th driver to score a point on his debut after being drafted in to replace Fernando Alonso. Note that there were other drivers who scored top ten finishes on their debut but did not score points due to the different systems used in the past.

Vandoorne is the 21st Belgian driver to start an F1 race and the first since Jerome D’Ambrosio in the 2012 Italian Grand Prix. This was only the second time a Belgian driver has raced for McLaren in F1. The sole previous occasion was the 1973 German Grand Prix when Jacky Ickx finished third for them at the Nurburgring when his regular team Ferrari chose not to attend the German Grand Prix. Belgians therefore have a 100% points-scoring rate for McLaren.

Vandoorne’s race number 47 had never previously been used in a world championship race run to F1 rules. Chuck Weyant raced as number 47 in the 1959 Indianapolis 500, which did count towards the championship, but this was not a Formula One race. Coincidentally, Weyant’s 93rd birthday was on race day.

Like Rosberg, Toro Rosso also marked the tenth anniversary of their F1 debut with a Bahrain breakthrough. Max Verstappen’s sixth place was their first ever points finish in Bahrain.

Finally, Haas incredibly went one better than their debut as Romain Grosjean took fifth place. That moves him up to fifth in the drivers championship (tied on points with Raikkonen who is fourth by dint of having a higher best finishing position). This is the highest place Grosjean has ever occupied: his previous best was seventh in 2012 and 2013 while with Lotus.

The best race if you ignore the winner was just a boring drive and got little TV coverage. (not Nico's fault he drove superbly all weekend.) If the winning car is only going to be one of two then we need them both near the front end for a fight to win. As you say though from second on down it was very entertaining.

Irrespective of how good mercs downforce/engine power package is the pack is closing in
Where did red bull come from with there Reno engine they where certainly improved
Ferrari are showing strong and probably would have been stronger if it wasnt for the seb sandwich
there is always more to F1 than winning

Red Bull and Ferrari look capable of challenging at certain circuits/conditions this year. Interesting to see Seb moaning about the red bull, thought it was a perfectly good gap to put his car into and worked well to get him onto the podium ultimately.

Umm ros was half a minute ahead of second place..

Umm ros was half a minute ahead of second place..

56 laps to get less than 1/3rd of a lap in front? The only challengers (Vettel) were in the pits a few times, or started at the back and had to have 6 pit stops (Hamilton) plus all the nose changes, I think Sochi will be good if everyone stops crashing into Lewis and Seb gets a clear shot as well...

Lewis has been so unlucky these last few races and he is only 36 points behind, if rosberg gets a dnf and Lewis wins, there's only 11 points in it but they said that every driver who has won the first 3 races has won the championship, I'm sure rosberg will love to have the honour of being the driver with the most wins and no championship as well as being the only driver to win the first 3 races and not the championship!! Haha, we'll see... 18 races left yet

Haas were nowhere this race too, maybe their upgrades didn't work

Lewis didnt do to shabby credited with 5 pit stops a smashed front wing damaged undertray and set off from the back of the grid was only beaten by the top cars and massa in the williams
says a lot for the driver and car

Troubles brewing in the camp
Pirelli have won there way to in season testing of the 2017 wider tyres only after threatening to walk at the end of this season BUT its going to be interesting to see how and who is going to pay for the experiments
The tyres have to be be harder and more durable to withstand the extra downforce with a greater footprint so no doubt thats higher pressures as well
The majority of teams are pushing (exceptions mcLaren and Red Bull) for the 2017 rules to be scrapped as more downforce, bigger front wings will lead to less overtaking, they have cited the last three races as an example of how the gaps are closing up and racing is becoming exciting
The major manufacturers are also, according to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport pushing for the head of Bernie as they are fed up of his toxic statements
April 30th last ditch stand unless they move it on again
Will Bernie ride it out again or at 84 just roll over

Facts From Previous Race

With his six consecutive grand prix victory, Nico Rosberg joined a small and very special group of F1 drivers.

In the 66-year history of the sport, just three other drivers have managed to win six in a row: Vettel, Schumacher and Ascari.

Rosberg has now won more races than any other non-championship-winning driver. This was his 17th career victory moving him ahead of Stirling Moss. However other drivers before him have held this record but gone on to become champions, something he is now in a strong position to do so.

This is the first time since 2004 that the same driver has won the first three races of the season. Having done so, Rosberg would make history if he went on to miss out on the title: Every other driver who began a season with three wins in a row became champion in that season.

Those drivers were Schumacher in 2004, 2000 and 1994, Damon Hill in 1996, Nigel Mansell in 1992 and Ayrton Senna in 1991.

However as this is the longest calendar ever in F1 history, Rosberg’s three wins represent a smaller percentage of the total points available than ever before. He is 36 ahead but there is 450 still to win.

It was a weekend to forget for Hamilton. Once his gearbox change penalty was announced his chances of extending his pole positions streak were doomed, and his power unit problem consigned him to a back-of-the-grid start. His eight-race streak of podium finishes, which began at Suzuka last year, came to an end.

Unusually there was only one Mercedes driver on the podium, earning the team its 100th podium appearance. They are the ninth team to reach a century of podiums, joining Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Lotus, Brabham, Red Bull, Benetton and Renault – the latter also on 100.

That opened the door for Daniel Ricciardo to take his fourth front row start, though he is still looking for his first pole position. Rosberg took his 23rd, moving him ahead of Fernando Alonso and leaving him just one shy of the top ten. As with Hamilton in the first two races, Rosberg failed to hold the lead at the start of lap one having started from pole.

Mercedes’ run of eight consecutive front row lock-outs came to an end. However Ferrari occupied the second row of the grid for the third race running.

Daniil Kvyat reached the podium for the second time in his career, finishing third for the first time. It was a timely third podium finish for a Russian driver in F1 ahead of the country’s round of the championship.

Daniel Ricciardo became the fifth different driver to lead a race so far this year. He only led for two laps, but that’s one more than Hamilton has managed all season. Rosberg has been in the lead for 133 of the 170 laps raced so far (78.2%).

For the first time since the V6 hybrid turbo regulations were introduced in 2014, all of the cars which started the race saw the chequered flag.

This was the second-largest field to have a 100% finishing rate in an F1 race. All 22 drivers were classified, but at the European Grand Prix five years ago 24 cars started and finished.

So even a broken Mercedes is faster than the competition;).

Mercedes say they still do not understand the 'miracle' by which Lewis Hamilton was able to get to the chequered flag in Russia, after revealing he had 'zero' water pressure for the last 16 laps of the Grand Prix.

With zero - yes, zero! - water pressure remaining for the last 16 laps, the job he did to nurse the car home and still retain second place was truly remarkable...
Mercedes on Hamilton's run to the flag in Russia
In an open letter on their website addressed to fans, the team also outlined how Nico Rosberg's lead was also jeopardised by 'alarming' read-outs from the MGU-K, which forced the German to complete the race in a 'safe' mode. Mercedes conceded that both incidents highlighted how they have 'not met your own expectations' in terms of reliability in 2016.

"We were baffled and gutted by the repeat MGU-H failure on Lewis' car in qualifying," Mercedes explained in reference to the Briton's issues on Saturday, "but we kept calm, gathered our thoughts and sprung into action.

"It took a monumental effort from a significant number of people back in the UK and in Russia to fly spare parts out to the track, fit them to the spare Power Unit by working through the night and make sure Lewis could start from P10 on Sunday without having broken parc ferme.

"[In the Grand Prix] we started to see the water pressure falling on Lewis' car. At the time, he was pushing hard to catch Nico and pull away from Kimi - posting several purple lap times in the process.

"We needed to await confirmation from the FIA of what we could tell him via the radio. After several calls asking him to take it easy, the all-clear came to let him know that he was losing water pressure.

"With zero - yes, zero! - water pressure remaining for the last 16 laps, the job he did to nurse the car home and still retain second place was truly remarkable. He had to keep the car as cool as possible to avoid damaging the engine whilst also keeping Kimi at a safe distance, which was no mean feat.

"We genuinely aren't sure by what miracle the car limped across the line - but we're certainly not going to complain."

Enjoy the racing
Ecclestone wants all engines to be equal
Whiting wants the cars to look dangerous but in reality not so
Manufacturers are working on artificial noise
It sounds so exciting I dont think

Engines will run with no water for a while, and race engines more so because they tend to have much better oil cooling provision than road car enignes. I remember a NASCAR race (at Watkins Glen, as I recall, so a conventional circuit rather than an oval) where the leading car had a blocked radiator grille and the water boiled, then started venting like a geyser from the overflow pipe - driver reported the water temperature gauge was pegged in the red. Then it stopped because all the water had gone and the gauge went to zero about four laps from the end. He still won, the cooling provided by the oil was enough to last the remaining few laps. Don't think there was much life left in the engine by the finish though!
