F1 season 2016

My thoughts go out to James Allison on the sudden loss of his wife, very sad.

Just been reading Sky have won the sole rights to all the live coverage from 2019.

Not on free terrestrial TV - apart from the British GP, whether we'll get highlights on C4, ITV etc ???

So much for Bernie wanting it to remain free to watch !!!

Still free to air on RTL for every race. To watch it in the UK all you need is a cheap satellite kit from Maplins/B&Q/etc. Although I believe their current rights deal runs to the end of the 2017 season.

Highlights will do me. Most of the "races" these days are fairly processional with the start being where the majority of position changes occur. After that, it's tea time until the pit stops happen then more tea until the finish.

I've gradually been losing interest in F1, so by 2019 I may not be bothered watching it all.

Maybe by then their massive business brains will have worked out why the TV audiences reducing.

Ooh might have a look at that - wonder if I can get it with freesat dish ?

Any dish should do it, but it needs to be pointed at a different satellite to the UK channels. You can do it with a multi-angled LNB holder, but I just put up a second dish - it was easier. I ditched the cheap Sky box I was using, added a DiSEqC switch to run a cable from both satellites to the cheap box that came with the dish and watch all channels from the cheap box. The German channels aren't just for the F1, we watch regular German TV as many nights as we watch UK.

You can either watch RTL coverage with Radio 5 for the commentary, or let's be honest.. F1 commentary isn't particularly intellectual or difficult to follow in any language..

Could not agree more!!

Indeed I am starting to feel this way too!

As I wouldn't give Murdoch the drippings from my nose that'll be the end of me watching F1 and I've only missed 1 race in 16 years.

LOL Yup!

Good way of watching it, its only SD though? am I correct in this?

I can live without it. Certainly wont be spending extra money to watch it. It has become boring over the last few years.

Haven't a clue, I know some of the channels are HD. But as I watch on a 12 year old LCD with 720p at best, it's a moot point.

SD or HD doesn't make any difference to the content/enjoyment for me.

Not a criticism just interested in what you receive free gratis! sounds good to me, if its legal. Just had a quick google on it all and seems the equipment is cheap enough and no decoder card needed? How or should I say why. do the Germans get it for free?

Because RTL bids for the contract in the same way that BBC/Ch4 have done, it's a commercial station so there are adverts.

RTL provide:
  • Full coverage of qualifying, every race
  • Full coverage of the race, every race
  • They usually have full practice session coverage for Hockenheim but I'm less certain for 2016 season (possibly Spielberg as well but I'm less sure - if not ORF1 should have full coverage of all/most sessions for this race)

Sky Germany has the full practice session, qualifying and race coverage in HD on pay tv. That's the premium package. It may be that RTL taking an SD feed is the penalty for free to air.

But if you look worldwide (http://www.totalsportek.com/f1/formula-1-tv-channels-broadcasting/) free coverage is becoming very rare.

Presumably Ecclestone looked at the likes of the Premier League, saw that going to pay TV doesn't appear to have done its popularity any harm (maybe it has - I'm not a footie fan) and thought he could easily add a few more million to his bank account.

48" on his first night...

Will have a look at it ...

Back to F1
Musical chairs a definate for Bahrain
Both Bernie and jean toddt voted for it to stay 13 votes against 5 if force india went against the flow
http://www.pitpass.com/55730/No-change-to-Bahrain-qualifying-format

This is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport - they try something, which doesn't work, have an emergency meeting, agree it didn't work, broadcast that they got it wrong and are going to revert back to the original format - now a few days later, oh wait a minute, no not going to revert back now, going to try it again - it gets more farcical...

Musical chairs could. but not by any means certain, be tweeked
They are talking about Q1 Q2 remaining and Q3 being like 2015 Q3
But they must sort out the 90 sec bit or its a dumb idea
Apparently not until after Bahrain as they missed the deadline for change, or did they. who knows with these clowns

"Dear Bernie. Entirely due to the poorly thought out qualifying that you have seen fit to retain despite the fairly unanimous desire of the teams, I shall be cancelling my subscription to your Sky Sports channel as of today. The reason you have had so few complaints from the public is that there are so few viewers remaining due to your interference. Yours, Nod."

Of course, the senile old fart doesn't know that I have never subscribed to his channel but if enough people who do start to cancel and hit him in his wallet, he might see sense. Unlikely but possible!

I honestly don't think it is a big deal to subscribe to sky to watch f1, with Internet and all the other channels for £50ish a month is much cheaper than going to see each race, never mind 21 races (almost half the weekends in a year). 2019 will be no different to me as I've been watching it on sky since it started anyway. I would've preferred it to go to BT though, I would've got moto GP and WRC but nvm, I'm not interested enough to pay extra for them but I would have switched for f1

Whilst it will not be a problem for those that wish to pay for sky but with tv audiences shrinking globaly it will probably be a problem for sponsers and then manufacturers in the long run with those that dont
Who in there right mind will pay millions to reach a few people and likewise with manufacturers
Would there be an attraction to buy a merc because it won an obscure race in outer mongolia that few people watched
If F1 isnt out there its lost, just like wrestling massive in the 1970's you knew the names of the wrestlers, never missed Saturday afternoon on world of sport, then they really started faking it ITV droped it and now most people would have to google it to find it

Facts From Previous Race

Nico Rosberg scored his fourth consecutive victory in Australia, extending his best-ever winning streak in Formula One.

At Bahrain he has a chance to win a fifth race in a row which would be a rare achievement. Two years ago Lewis Hamilton became only the seventh driver in F1 history to do it.

However if Mercedes take another one-two in the next round, that would be a unique achievement. No team has ever had more than five consecutive one-twos in world championship rounds. Ferrari have had five-in-a-row twice, in 1952 and 2002, and Mercedes did the same in 2014. The silver cars also had four consecutive one-twos prior to withdrawing from Formula One at the end of 1955.

Rosberg’s win was the 15th of his career which means he has now won as many races as Jenson Button. His season-opening victory means someone other than Hamilton is leading the drivers’ championship for the first time since the 2014 Italian Grand Prix, when Rosberg headed the table.

Hamilton had dominated proceedings in Melbourne prior to the start of the race, leading all three practice sessions and all three phases of qualifying, yet he didn’t lead a single lap of the grand prix.

His first pole position since last year’s Italian Grand Prix was the 50th of his career, making him the third driver to reach a half-century after Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. With 20 more races to go, Senna’s tally of 65 pole positions and Schumacher’s all-time record of 68 could fall to Hamilton before the end of the season.

The fastest lap fell to Daniel Ricciardo. This was the fifth of his career, putting him level with Giueppe Farina, Carlos Pace, Jody Scheckter, Didier Pironi, John Watson and Michele Alboreto.

Ricciardo equalled the best result for an Australian driver in their home race with fourth place, where Mark Webber also finished in 2012. In the 20th anniversary of Melbourne’s first race as Australia’s round of the world championship, the country is still waiting to see one of its drivers score an official podium finish.

Webber unofficially went up onto the podium in 2002 after taking a shock fifth place for Minardi on his debut. And Ricciardo, of course, was on the podium two years ago before being disqualified from second position for a technical infringement.

The race ended the long-running practice of drivers only having two dry-weather tyre compounds available. Surprisingly as many as nine drivers used all three types during the race: Rosberg, Massa, Sainz Jnr, Verstappen, Palmer, Button, Nasr, Wehrlein and Ericsson.

None of the three rookies in the field scored points, but Rio Haryanto became the first Indonesian driver to contest a round of the world championship. With almost 250 million inhabitants, Indonesia is the fourth-largest country in the world by population. It is the largest of those to have an F1 driver after Alexander Rossi of the USA (population 320 million) lost his seat to, ironically, Haryanto.

But the most important milestone of the race was undoubtedly newcomers Haas scoring points on their debut. The significance of this should not be understated. No completely new teams have even tried to come into F1 in the previous five seasons. The three which arrived in 2010 were all a long way off the pace and two of them disappeared without ever scoring a point.

Sixth place was the best result for a completely new team (as opposed to a team with a new identity such as Brawn in 2009) since Toyota 14 years ago. To put that into perspective, Toyota was and remains one of the world’s largest car manufacturers and came into F1 with a budget vast enough for it to spend an entire year testing.

Well, I just hope the race is better than the qualifying 'show' was. No cars on track as the flag dropped again......

Mild spoilers... The race was on free TV, if you haven't seen it don't read on....

Exciting race! It's a bad sign when £50 million doesn't get a point but your newbie replacement can manage for a lot less... I'm sure Ron will be thinking about next years savings. Unlucky for a merc driver and even more unlucky for a Ferrari driver but nvm, there are 19 more to go. Williams were clutching at straws and another good job for Haas, maybe it will give way to lots more new teams.
