F1 season 2016

Yes, been reading that BBC have sold it off to Channel 4 (as they promised no advert breaks during live races - which I don't think ITV offered), unknown as to what happens to BBC commentary presently - would be nice if they kept Suzi, David etc, and got hopefully EJ won't come along...

Very much so. Even amateur sport is covered in ads these days - from the logos on boots/balls etc. to sponsors' names on boards all over the place.

well lets hope there sound equipment isnt the same and lets us hear the cars over ben Edwards or who ever instead of the other way round

Well I certainly remember John Player Special being F1 sponsors in the early 70's, so 44 years at least...|I remember having the JPS Lotus 77 as a scalextric car and the 6 Wheel Elf Tyrell.

Looks like advertising started around 1968 in F1.

A quick search shows the following examples:

Ferrari
Shell (1968–1972), Agip (1973–1994), FIAT (1976–1994), Goodyear, Pioneer(1993–1994), Marlboro (1984–1994)

Lotus
Gold leaf (1968-1971), John Player Special (1972-1978)

Even before that I'd guess, I was watching some videos on Youtube of Juan Manuel Fanngio at the Nurbergring in 1957 and there was advertising around the track though none on the cars, that I could see.

Entirely possible, I only looked for references to car advertising.

Yes I did too initially looking for adverising on cars and came up with a similar year, but must have been happening before then.

Cheaper! They used to manage many years ago.

The point being I think sponsorship on cars in F1 has being going on a lot longer than it hasn't, by quite some considerable margin. First F1 World Champ was 1950 with Giuseppe Farina, so 66 years next season, of which at least 48 years have seen advertising on the cars

On the cars them selves 1968
The iconic British Racing Green Lotus, with a revolutionary aluminum-sheet monocoque chassis instead of the traditional space-frame design, was the dominant car, and in 1968 the team broke new boundaries when they were the first to carry advertising on their cars.

Trackside has nearly always been there The cars were advertising the manufacturers Alpha, Masseratti, Ferrari, Lotus etc inthe early days

Channel 4 has a 25% stake in whisper films which was set up bu Sunil Patel (ex BBC sports producer) D Coulthard and J Humphries
Maybe Mr Coulthard will surviive to commentate on C4 F1

Is the current presenter team employed by the BBC, or are they an independent production company?

Coulthard joined the BBC in 2008 Jorden in 2009 Suzie Perry moved from moto gp (1997 - 2010 commenting for the BBC) joined F1 2012 for the 2013 season

That's why moto GP was watched on Eurosport and why I have to subscribe to sky f1... Hopefully channel 4 will have some sense and try to pay Jake more money than BT

Well, it does explain why the BBC's F1 website suddenly stopped updating news and gossip after the 9th Dec. I was starting to wonder but this sudden announcement to drop F1 now starts to make sense.

Cheaper F1? Get rid of ALL electronics and let the skill of the driver dictate who wins.
Traction control is already banned and was last year (and possibly previously). Now, while I like carbs and mechanical fuel injection, I'm not sure how you intend the cars to run without at least one electronic component, as even banning electronic ignition and going back to the more traditional points and condenser setup found on most road cars in the 1960s and 1970s would still require an actual condenser (which is a capacitor, an electronic component).

Could always ban the cars from having a battery and alternator to keep it charged (those have electronics as well) and make them use magneto igniton, or I suppose making them all use diesels would work, don't need any ignition for those.

Or did you not mean ALL electronics? Doesn't matter what the rules are, the teams will find a way to spend money to make the cars go faster.

Sorry for maybe not being clear - I meant electronic driver aids such as TCS, ABS and all those KERS things etc which in my opinion make it more Play Station/XBOX than real racing.

Assuming TCS is traction control, it and ABS are already banned. KERS and other energy recovery systems are there to improve efficiency (in a nod towards green issues, although the environmental impact of the circus travelling between circuits far outweighs on track fuel usage).

These engines are nothing short of phenomenal they are better than the v8 and V10 ones before equal in power but using 90% less fuel

As for the noise, this falls into 2 categories TV and track side
TV if they got there fingers out and got proper track side sound instead of a muted effect so Ben Edwards can be heard it would surprise a lot of people
Track side , yes they arnt as loud but a lot of fans are enjoying the squeal of tyres and the cars harvesting plus planks grating without perminant ear damage (next year a new sound should be added when the waste gate exits bypassing the turbo)
The main limiting factor is tyres, you cant race balls out on tyres that only last 5 laps unless you look after them (hence the new allotment system to encourage more pit stops so they can race faster between them)
Wear out fast tyres were Bernies idea of spicing things up, worked well hasnt it
Electronics will never be banned as this is the way forward To see exciting racing they should bring back racing cars with the engine in front of the driver and the driver sits up high in shirt sleeves and a leather helmet or is that just looking for the death part of motor racing That should spice it up
Mercedes dominance is nothing compared to yesteryears Ferrari, Williams Mclaren Red Bull
Read and be amazed

In my opinion, and I've held it for quite a few years, the best way to improve the racing is to ensure the cars can follow each other closely without ruining their tyres. Ground effect aero would help.

Agreed but the tyres are ruined by the wake disrupting the downforce of the following car making the tyres spin with loss of grip More mechanical grip is needed and less aero grip then cars may just be able to pass each other without the artifical aids and wear faster tyres
Ground effect was a hot topic some months back but isnt mentioned as much now where as wider tyres are
Lets see what the teams come up with by the 15 th January and what Bernie and the invisible man come up with by the 30th probably water canons and flourescent jackets

Put a clutch and gearstick in the cars and let them 'drive' and earn their money :)
They have a clutch...two in fact! and the flappy paddy gear sticks in the wheel seem to make much more sense than an old fashioned stick...and requires just the same skills.

They do have a cluch and a gear shifter just that they are all operated together
Just like my city go auto, flick the lever and the computer changes up or down as is my preference

I know they have a dual clutch and paddles, but the old way is better :)

Yes and what is really annoying, is the constant criticism that Pirelli get for the tyres not lasting - they were asked to make tyres that didn't last !!!

And another thing is the bloody fuel saving they have to do / give the impression they have to.

This the state of F1 Pirelli get slated for making Bernies wear faster tyres so they go conservative and then get critisised for them not wearing out too fast giving not more than one pit stop in a race
It hasnt obviously stopped a dominanant team taking the title it hasnt spiced up the racing, yet we are still stuck with it My money says once the teams have the new allotment sorted there wont be many new suprises next year
The fuel saving is getting less of an issue now as the PU's are getting more efficent most of the non racing is to do with conserving useful tyre wear
But the way forward according to Bernie is make the cars look pretty and noisey on spectacular but impractical circuits in outer beyond and anyone that is rich enough can have a special engine thats diffrent to every body elses can play on a tilted playing field and no one will notice its all artifical

Yup! Maybe a few safety measures but bring back the likes of the Bugattis, Bentleys, Mercedes etc. of the '20s and '30s. Oh, wait a bit. Wasn't there some marque dominance back then as well? ;) FWIW, VSCC meetings are far more interesting and have better racing than F1 has had for years!

And another thing is the bloody fuel saving they have to do / give the impression they have to.

There has always and always will be fuel saving in F1, teams always fuel the car light for faster laps when they can then rely on safety car or fuel saving during less frantic stages of the race to make it to the end. I remember the old turbo days when they had to turn them down or run out of fuel, some failed to turn them down enough on occasions :)
