F1 season 2015

Real motor racing fans then watch the Nascar 600 after the Indy! :-)

Real racing fans dont bother with any of that F1 pish or Americans going predominantly round in circles.

Real racing fans watch 6 ton behemoths tearing up the track and each other or V8 supercars ride bumper to bumper

Joking aside i lost interest in F1 years ago, i personally find it as dull as dishwater.
Not withstanding my passion for BTCC the only other forms of motorsport that i watch is the ETRC

And the Aussie V8's

Very true, f1 is a struggle to watch sometimes.

I've been getting into Formula E over the last few races, the racing is really good.

Indycars is fantastic, I would highly recommend watching the 2015 season if you don't already. A lot more to it than the ovals.

For years now ovals have been the minority. I've watched Indy Cars since the 90s. Trouble with the series these days is that the DW12 is so bloody ugly to look at!

The DW12 is ugly (although I like the super speedway kit) but the racing is superb and I like the fact you don't really know who'll win.

This year there will be the new aero kits from Honda and Chevy so the cars might end up looking better.

Looks like Malaysia could be an early morning race (UK time) this year.

http://www.espn.co.uk/malaysia/motorsport/story/188873.html

The 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix could start earlier than originally scheduled because of Jules Bianchi's serious crash in Japan last year.

Bianchi suffered a serious brain injury when he crashed under yellow flags in heavy rain and fading light in Japan last October - a race which had started under the safety car due to torrential weather. The FIA set up an accident panel in the wake of his crash which suggested a new four-hour rule, which would ensure a day race would not start within four hours of dusk or sunset.

The late afternoon start has caused the Malaysia race to be hit with heavy downpours before, notably the 2009 race which had to be red flagged before 75% race distance, leading to half points being awarded. Malaysia is currently scheduled to start at 1600 local time this year but circuit boss Razlan Razali says Bernie Ecclestone is happy to make a change even though the four-hour recommendation is not written into the regulations.

Typical! Malaysia seems to be a shared (live) race so the repeat will be a highlights show, probably after 10pm. Of course, I might be awake at 0mygodit'searly am anyway but I won't be setting an alarm for it!

Honda dosnt get 32 tokens to play with
Here is how it works
The situation seemed difficult to sustain, and experts agreeing that Honda could easily win the case in court. It didn't come that far however, as the BBC reports a letter by Charlie Whiting now allows Honda some freedom to develop its engine.

"If the three 2014 manufacturers have eight, seven and five unused tokens respectively at the start of the season, then the new manufacturer will be allowed to use six during the season (the average rounded down to the nearest whole number),” reads a letter sent by FIA race director Charlie Whiting.

With a bit of skill the FIA could have made this difficult for the man in the street to understand
F1 is fast becoming a sport that has that many weird rules only the dedicated will watch Some one just dropping in to watch will only see cars going round and round with no idea who is in the lead or why someone is being penalised, this includes many of the commentators

Regarding the engine development tokens, I may have got this wrong and as I consider myself a bit of a F1 fan would guess the casual observer will be completely confused by now, especially with the way it's being reported by the media.

The way I read it it is as follows, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Each engine manufacturer has the option to use the 'tokens' to perform engine upgrades before they homologate their engines for the season, after which the engine development will be frozen again.
The loophole everyone is reporting relates to there being no set date for the 2015 season for the homologation of the engines and therefore it's being reported that the manufacturer's can develop their 2015 engines throughout the season, which I see as being essentially correct but I think there may be a pertinent point missing. Don't the rules also state that teams must run with a homologated engine? In that case the new 2015 engines can only be run during a qualifying session or race once they have been homologated and therefore while the 2015 engines are being developed wouldn't any team running that manufacturer's engine need to run the 2014 homologated version. Or am I missing something somewhere?

Maybe the Toto Wolff line relates to a team running an engine that has not been homologated being used. Lets face it, at the moment Mercedes had enough of an advantage at the end of 2014 to run the old spec engine for the first few races to see where the opposition have gained before unleashing their own upgraded engine.

All true but it appears they can homologate after each token/tokens spent, Beats me Its because in 2014 engines had to be homologated by febuary of that year Due to the FIA not stating an homologation by date for 2015 they can homologate when they want
Merc were going to run 2014 engine and use 32 tokens over the season BUT with Honda now getting the average of tokens left by the top three teams on the first race Merc are running there 2015 motor (as with the others ) so that honda dosnt have that many tokens to spend

To race the engine must be homologated so quite what he was saying about the Honda motor is a mystery

Force India as well.

Force India unveiled a striking new colour scheme as it launched the VJM08 on Wednesday, which it hopes can challenge for podiums with regularity in 2015.

The car was officially unveiled by Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg at an event in Mexico City as the team released promotional pictures to the media. The new colour scheme is predominantly silver and black, with shades of orange, making it the second year Force India has chosen a dark livery.

During the launch the team said new features included a revised rear suspension lay-out and modified sculpting of the sidepods. Of note was the VJM08's wider nose, a contrast to the images of the Williams FW28, released earlier on Wednesday.

The new car will not debut until the second winter test, with Force India set to run its 2014 car at the Jerez test which begins on February 1. Team boss Vijay Mallya said he hopes the VJM08 can build on the success of 2014 and help Force India fight with the teams at the front of the grid this season.

At least the Force India has lost it's gentlemans sausage, the wings look different too.

The force india is reported to be only the livery and the VMJ08 will be revealed later
It will be interesting to see if all teams go for the thumb up front

Rumours circulating that force india is up for sale
More rumours than normal
Of the two people that run it ones in jail with bail set at 1.5billion
The other is being chased by the indian authorities and his airline hasnt flown for long enough well in debt

And laying some of the blame on Hamilton for the 2007 implosion at McLaren

There was a time when I was full of respect for Ron Dennis, nowadays just hearing his name makes me think 'meh'

New mclaren looks pretty ugly too, should've gone white
they are nearly all going to be like this swoopy nose tight waist with the exceptions of the thumb noses
Its all underneath that the differances will be as they condition the air right and left from the front wing via the nose
Strange that they have gone silver (merc) instead of white (honda)

Why? It seems to be in line with the rules that everyone is following.

From the link
Engine manufacturers are allowed to change up to 48 per cent of their power unit for this season, with modifications allowed at any point over the campaign.

Renault says for the first race it has used the majority of the 32 development tokens that it has available, but will save some for updates later in the campaign.

But the engine freeze was introduced to reduce costs and changing (IIRC) 48% of the power plant can't have been cheap!

I'll laugh if/when the changes turn out to have been detrimental and they have to use up the rest of their tokens to get back to where they were at the end of the '14 season.

There wasnt an engine freeze they could alter 48% of the unit hence the token system
The whole PU has 66 tokens (pieces given diffrent tokens depending on there performance value)
This reduces year on year 2015 32 tokens = 48% can be changed 2016 25 tokens 2017 20 tokens 2018 15 tokens = 23% 2019 3 tokens 2020 3 tokens = to 4.5%
Just another FIA simple rule

Most teams are using nearly all there tokens by race one
The spectre of Honda looms and the more tokens the other teams save the greater the average for Honda to use over the season
Honda could well be a rocket or a dud its the joker that has the other teams worried

Bernie may be dead by then and F1 will vanish up its own fundament!

IMO, the regs should address safety while allowing maximum development in terms of power and efficiency. Currently they seem to lay down most of the spec of the power train while allowing a few relatively minor differences in the implementations.

Give 'em all a fixed amount of fuel to cover 200 miles and 3 sets of whatever tyres they want to use to cover the same distance - first past the finish line gets the points.

Problem there is it will stifle the small teams.

The manufacturers could spend 400 million just on the engine and then lap the little teams in the first 10 laps who can't afford 40 million for the entire team for the season.

But aren't Ferrari the biggest spenders? Cash =/= results. If the small teams can't handle the heat, they're playing in the wrong league - why should the big boys have to "pull their punches" to accommodate those who can't afford to play?

And we are back to 4 /5 teams playing that is until they decide its an economic downturn and of they go elsewhere and thats when you want the small dedicated teams to race

If that what happens, that's what happens. The smaller teams can still race but if they can't compete with the big boys they need to do it in other series. It works for other sports.

Does the overall length change or just the proportions? It is surprising how big they are.

Looking at new McLaren it looks like the length is the same but almost all the other dimensions have changed.
