Euro 2024

Wow ! England so passive and lacking in confidence against Slovakia, well against everyone so far. For goodness sake take the' handbrake ' off, Give 100% effort to win the match and if you lose, so be it.

Once again Southgate leaves substitutes to the end. He/they just got lucky with that corner. Not saying Bellingham got lucky,it was skilful....but...
I think Switzerland will knock them out. They're in great form with Granit Xhaka man of the tournament, so far... I think.

I wonder if Arteta regrets selling him ? By all accounts Xhaka wanted to leave, though. He's done well since joining Bayer Leverkusen.... winning a league and cup double.

Xhaka wanted to leave the previous season but Arteta did a deal where he signs a new contract and then he could go the following year (last year). Xhaka's wife is German and she wanted to bring up their children in the German education system. He got his move, Arsenal got a bit more money for him, a typical gentlemens agreement from the club. It also allowed Arsenal to raise the money for his replacement (Declan Rice).

As for England, they look lost and lacking in confidence. Until the goal Bellingham showed very little of the hype, but big players turn up in big games. From an observers point of view, there seems to be very little movement up front which is causing the midfield to move the ball sideways. There will be some changes for the next game due to the yellow cards picked up yesterday.

Southgate is an utter disgrace. No changes at HT despite ANOTHER woeful performance. How Foden is in the team still is beyond me! So passive and lacking in confidence throughout.

What was the point in Toney sub at 94 mins when losing 1-0? No sense whatsoever! He was lucky Bellingham is world class and got us to ET.

We have done as well as we have in recent years DESPITE Southgate - had we had anyone half decent then we would have won something by now. Far too negative and too loyal to players playing badly.

Is it not over yet? Only know that Scotland are out because neighbour is home from Germany.

Well I was mightily impressed with Georgia. They were great to watch and I've been routing for the lesser known euro teams. Germany are looking pretty hot at the moment. France and Spain both haven't got into gear yet and are not performing the way I thought they would. England are been terrible. I'm amazed they're this far into the tournament! What frustrates me the most with them is the hype they get with the press and commentators and how they get bigged up with poor performances and excuses are given when results don't come in, which is why Southgate probably has been the manager so long. The commentator said during a match about the poor pitch when Kane I think it was completely missed the target, yet the replay showed he totally scuffed the ball.
I think when they play Switzerland they really need to find some form from somewhere and step it up, push forward, make more runs and come out more dynamic.

On a flipside, as a Gooner, I'm awaiting some transfer news ready for the new season, maybe this year could be our year, it's been a while!

Have you read the press? They have been slated this tournament.

And Spain have arguably looked like one of the best sides.

Yes. This time they have been slated from what I've seen online, not sure about the papers, haven't read one in a while!
It's just all the other past games they have played over all the years I'm talking about.

Spain looked better in their last game but like France, early on they didn't seem to gel and get into gear.

France v Portugal I'm looking forward to, just watch Pepe at the back doesn't get caught out again!

Southgate should have been sacked long ago.

I had the match on but hardly watched as I just get so bored with England constantly passing the ball from one player to another across the pitch and back again and then possibly involving the goal keeper in the attack. They're so slow going forward that when they do get up the pitch they're facing 11 defenders which they find hard to break down and then they seem to have no plan B be except to panic.

Oh and putting Trippier on the left is just idiotic. Anyone from the championship would be an improvement on that.

I'd honestly rather watch Middlesbrough play.

I agree. Several times we had corners, and free kicks in promising positions, and somehow managed to get the ball all the way back to Pickford in one or two passes.

It's great that we win, but boy this sport is no longer entertaining. I guess the result is everything in the modern world.

I took had the match on, but watched very little of it. That said, I shall of course tune in again on Wednesday in the forlorn hope that we will both win and entertain.

In my Football Bingo game there is only phrase all that gets even close to a win. Loads of attacking, then a slight stall and a little pass a little bit backwards.. then

"Keeper's Bal!"

I'm not clever or a footballer, but if you are well into the opponents half, have them all looking around nervously, how does it make sense to pass back to the keeper to then try and get you (back into) the opponents half? That's where you are now!

That was a bit diffeent to the earlier games, but still had the negative elements from defence and midfield. Saka was absolutely brilliant, Pickford, Foden, Mainoo, Walker, Palmer and Bellingham had good games. It is time to get rid of Kane, he did absolutely nothing, so I would start with the above players and subsitute Kane for Watkins or Toney. Subsitutions need to be made at half time or 60 minutes at the latest.

I have no idea why Southgate is so scared to make early changes. Kane was poor again. We have great players on the bench, foden should have been off earlier.

After the Netherlands scored their second goal against Turkey they did what England do in that position..sit back.

As already mentioned...late substitutes again. Why doesn't Southgate learn ? In the Netherlands game against Turkey,Ronald Koeman sent on Weghorst at the start of the second half and it worked. ..as did his off -the-bench appearance against Poland .Weghorst is 31,infact 32 next month (I checked).. so not a good idea to start him. I said in an earlier post that Southgate looks permanently stressed, full of anxiety and anxiety stops right decision-making and, more importantly, at the right time....in any walk of life. Apart from anything else..ie poor strategy, it's not fair on those brought on giving them so little time to make a difference but each time Ivan Toney was brought on he did make a difference. Against Slovakia it was the 94th minute. Southgate left it until one minute before time to bring him on against Switzerland and only for penalties. He's a great player and I'd like to see him or Ollie Watkins, another favourite of mine, replace Kane who looks tired and lethargic . Maybe that fall into the plastic boxes on the side was a blessing...for England not Kane..lol. Anyway, taking into consideration Southgate's disposition I think he'll go half-way and start Kane, if he's ok after the incident, but replace him with either Toney or Watkins at half-time or 5 minutes after the start. When a player needs replacing at half-time it's seems usual to do it five minutes into the second half..maybe it looks better for the one being replaced. Surely he'll make a change, if it's needed, before almost the end of normal time ?

Both teams seem to play in a similar fashion, especially when it comes to sitting back after scoring. England need to keep a close eye of Gakpo..(it's great watching him play) could be player of the tournament, infact, he's top scorer with three golas so could win the Golden Boot. Having said that a few are on two goals including Bellingham and Kane so, all to play for..or score for..lol. Virgil Van Djik is a legend and Depay is in great form and Ake is playing well..an 89% passing success rate . He stays ahead of Spurs Van de Ven for that left-back place .It's not going to be easy and this one could go to penalties, too. I think we have the better team re quality but ,as ever, its how Southgate uses them. I won't be holding my breath.

I'm not quite sure why we have a better quality team. If we have then they do their damndest to hide it. We have been abysmal for 90% of the tournament and that's not taking into account the lower level teams we have played who have actually equaled us or bettered us the majority of the time. Even if we win it southgate has to go.

Win or lose I think he'll go. From some of what he has said recently he sounds fed up with the critism, and he can either go out on a high, or go on failure.

My bold:

I meant re individual players.I should have made that clearer.

I think one reason, for what can be considered to be underperformance considering the talent, is that these tournaments come soon after the end of what is, arguably, a longer, harder and more intense domestic season than any other country and so our players can seem tired reflected in the slow pace of the game ..bar short periods of 'liveliness' and not at their best. We see them play so much better for their own Premiere League clubs. Another issue is how much time, compared to the England team, do the teams of other nations get to play together before a tournament ? Having said all this, Gapko and Van Djik play for Liverpool ,Ake Manchester City and Van de Ven,Spurs. Depay plays for Atheltico Madrid and De Vrij-Inter Milan.

I have to agree with this sentiment. We have, probably, the most challenging league in Europe. It's quite possible for almost any side to beat another, in Spain they have 3 or 4 elite teams, Germany has maybe 3, Italy 2 or 3, Portugal 2. The games in the EPL are far more intense on a regular basis than in any other league. Some of the sides in the top divisions of football in France, Spain & Italy would struggle in the Championship.

The reason we have one of the best leagues in the world is because we have some of the worlds best (non English) players and pay by far the best salaries apart from the likes of Saudi and china. The press constantly tell us we are the best only to constantly knock us when we believe our own publicity and constantly fail.
Premier league players from France Spain Italy Belgium Germany don't whinge about tough seasons.
Saying that I still hope we win. We just don't deserve on form to have got this far.

Don't they? I know that some of the Man City & Chelsea foreign players have stated that the EPL is "hard work". For many of the top European sidea, 80% of their games are almost like a training match compared to a truly competitive game, that's one reason why they do so well in European competitions.

I'm talking about the pl players that play for other nations in the euros. They don't keep going on about how tired they are or how long the season is or even how they haven't got over missing kalvin Phillips

So am I, and a couple from City have stated that the EPL is harder work than Spain or Germany (De Bryune was one of them).

We all have opinions..... I've given mine..... you believe it's wrong. That's fine. Mine is if people want to keep making excuses for our overworked prima Donna's they are perfectly entitled to.,,,,,

Maybe the extra stress of not being able to spend their millions as they are playing football
All the time :ROFLMAO:;)

It is purely down to Southgate and lack of tactics - we are playing too scared. Most of our players are used to playing attacking football - possibly only the Palace boys are not. But the tactics are stifling us and Kane needs to be dropped.

We are talking about a bunch of full-time professional footballers who play the game week in and week out. They really shouldn’t need someone to tell them what to do. Once they are on the pitch the manager has very little control over their performance.

Not really. The players are supposed to impose the tactics of the manager. They can't just make it up as they go.

. A few weeks ago Spurs midfielder, Bissoumna, was mugged in France. When I was buying a Tissot watch recently.. just a few hundred pounds, I saw watches at £4000-£8000 (online )and some didn't look much smarter than mine BUT Spurs midfielder, Bissouma, had his watch stolen from his wrist, in a mugging after he was sprayed with teargas, in France, at the beginning on June, where he was on holiday..value ? £260,000  https://www.spurs-web.com/spurs-new...r-mugged-on-holiday-with-260000-watch-stolen/

Bissouma gets £55,000 a week..£2.8 million 2022/23. I don't know if that included any sponsorship deals.

In the same few days, Marcus Rashford was fined for exceeding the 70mph limit on the M60 in Manchester in his £560,000 Rolls Royce Cullinan, just one of several Rolls Royce cars he has. He had a crash last year involving another of his cars which was valued at £700,000 .He also owns a £390,000 McLaren 765 Long Tail and a Lamborghini Urus Performante at £350,000. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ust-months-700-000-edition-wrecked-crash.html

He's on £300,000 a week and last year got £10.4 million. I hesitate to say 'earned'... Once again, I don't know if it included any sponsorship deals.

Does anyone know how many of them actually play in the position they do for their clubs ?

Agree with everything that's been said. Kane I've always said is over rated and looks poor. I get frustrated and bored watching the tactics of passing it around the back 4 and when the mids gets the ball, more often than not, rather than put a ball in the box, it gets passed back to the back 4 again. If not that then it's the same as I've already said but it goes out to the wingers. I find the tactics boring and predictable and wish every now and then, someone would bang a long ball into the box for someone to try and get their head on, mix it up a little. I appreciate though this is easy to say as an armchair manager but I can say hand on heart that they're not exciting to watch and predictable.
