Place to discuss the tournament!

Great start so far, Scots getting spanked, some good games and England getting a good result against a tricky team.

Have to drop Foden though, he was poor and need Gordon or Palmer there instead, maybe even Eze. Bellingham outstanding again!

Well, I think Serbia deserved something from that game especially for their second half performance.
Apart from Bellingham, Saka and maybe your goalkeeper I thought the England were fairly underwhelming.
It was only the first game so things may improve.
Yes, we got spanked but from one of the favourites to win the competition not a second rate country ;)

I felt it was a fairly standard England tournament performance. Lots of 'Favourites' hype, followed by a hide behind the sofa performance in the 2nd half.

Why do we need a THREE and a HALF hour TV programme to broadcast a 90 minute football match?

Southgate's Achilles heel is knowing..or rather not knowing..when to bring on subs. They were lucky to get away with it last night. You'd think he'd have learnt from the 2020 Euros and the World Cup but evidently not. Having said that, maybe he brought on Gallagher and Bowen just to see out the game at 1-0.Foden is ineffective on the left, too.
The Serb manager did move quickly when he saw the need.

As a Spurs fan Mourhino had the same issues re subs. The new manager is much quicker to make a move when he sees things flagging.

Yes..it does go on a bit prior to the game. I won't watch three games in one day..2.00pm 4.00pm and 8.00pm. I like to tune in about twenty minutes before kick off to hear what the "expert" studio pundits have to say.

Martin Keown was the BBC commentator for the Netherlands v Poland game and has come in for some stick. Link below. He also kept referring to the Netherlands ..the official name in the Euros.. as Holland right through the first half. Second half it was the Netherlands so I wondered if someone back at the ranch had had a word with him but right near the end..or at the end he said 'Holland". All this was despite his excellent summariser,Robyn Cowen, who referred to 'the Netherlands' from start to finish. It is a bit confusing because both North and South Holland are provinces in the west of the Netherlands, with the former being where Amsterdam is located....Dunno.

Complaints re Keown's commentary performance.

Thats just pedantic - I use both terms, most normally Holland. Everyone knows what he is talking about

My bold I wasn't being pedantic. If someone is pedantic about something they insist on one particular version. As I wrote.."dunno"..it was clear it was up for comment. I tend to question things. All you needed to say was that you use both names.... and that's fine. That comment is one reason I seldom interact with you and why I left the Football thread.

To be fair, I think Kewon has a point, VVD was pretty ordinary, and slow.

Well that was like watching paint dry.

I went over to the lock up and fitted a modified brake master cylinder to the Escort and then had one hell of a job trying to get the clutch cable end back though and onto the clutch pedal. What a pain! Cuts and scratches and three hands needed....

Anyway, it was probably better than watching the football apparently..... :)

On tv news I am seeing regularly children who have clearly been taken with parents to watch the football in (Germany is it?). Shouldn't they be at school? If so, wouldn't you expect the parents to want to be more discreet because presumably they will be fined for taking them out of school for weeks or at least days (given England's likely performance). Isn't it rather shocking that parents would deem watching some live football more important than their child's education? It is to me.

Spain playing like we fans think England should be playing. :ROFLMAO:

Is it possible that they live in Germany?

Of course possible, but unlikely I suspect going by the interviews I've seen them in. Also, school is also compulsory in Germany and their summer school holidays haven't started yet either.

Well, there is so much they can learn. History, geography, language, culture, food, life skills… my kids would get more out of a trip to Germany than a week at school.

In any case, they would simply be “ill” that day. Did that when I took my son to West Indies b Afghanistan in World Cup one day cricket. Also when booking a holiday that’s crossed half term, being back a day late saved almost 1k

Well, I'm not a parent who has had to confront the issue, but I do think it's one thing to skip a day or two to save a huge amount on holiday costs (though I still think it wrong), but for a sports event? No, that's irresponsible. To then be so blatant about it by getting in front of tv cameras is taking the p. I hope they get found out and fined heavily..
I won't derail the thread further but it does get my goat.

OK, then feasibly the English kids are German residents and weren't skipping school. But I really doubt it. Anyway, I expressed my point, no one else seems to be bothered about it, so I'll retire gracefully and say no more.
FWIW when I was a resident in Germany in the mid-80's, and the Euros were on, I supported Germany as they were good enough to let me live and work there, but I realise that other expats are rather less integrated than I was.

At least now the misery is over. I could only watch the first half before I went to do something less depressing.

I think the manager needs to go as he was tactically poor. A few of the players seemed to have an idea but the rest played like headless chickens.

Oh well, there's still curling

Is it not time that the 4 home nations played together as a UK team in international matches.

Well, we are different countries.. and how many Scots, Welsh or Irish players would get into a UK 11? Really cannot think of any. Players we have not called up like Solanke, Grealish, Rashford would be first choice names for any of the others

It's interesting that if you look at the value of the teams then the results were almost predictable in Group A:
Germany €859.8m
Scotland €178.4m
Hungary €169.9m
Switzerland €299.1m

Now look at Group C:
Slovenia €169.6m
Denmark €418.9m
Serbia €314.2m
England €1,382.0m

Suggests England are underperforming.

Southgate should be sacked mid tournament as we won't win with him!

Players are confused and not playing as they do for their clubs and he is totally deluded. Performances have been rubbish and he is too slow with subs. Should have given the likes of Gordon or Eze proper runouts and stop playing Foden who is out of form. Kane too needs to be dropped.

The team looked scared to try anything to me, Scared to shoot, scared to play quick passes, scared to take a player on - until the subs came on I don't think a single player took on a Slovenian. I know this isn't the 1970s anymore and the passing game is "safer" but it must surely be worth a try to run at defences, especially when the alternative isn't working. There also seemed to be a lack of movement - players running off the ball were few and far between. Are they all exhausted after a long season? Still, if we can remain unbeaten who knows how far we'll go ;-)

Kane & Bellingham's teammates in Germany and Spain seem fine, likewise those that play in the PL are doing fine too like Silva at Portuagl (and many others).

Amended for the Scotland team's last game

A fantastic result tonight for Georgia. By all accounts Austria is doing very well, too The way things are going I can see one of 'lesser' teams getting to, at least, the semi-final. I think England will be knocked out by one of them. I look at Southgate and despair. He was talking positively after the last game and my wife, noting his demeanour, said he doesn't believe in what he was saying. I have no idea who could or should replace him but replace him is what needs to be done and before his contract runs out in December. He has a permanent look of anxiety about him. I do wonder if the team have lost confidence in him.

That's Italy ...the favourites out . A good solid performance by Switzerland and the winners of tomorrow's England v Slovakia game play them in the quarter finals. On the form of the up and coming teams I can see England..second favourite.. not making it past the quarter finals tbh...if they beat Slovakia tomorrow.

These teams get better at each tournament..Euros and World Cup as their youth come through. It seems the days of France, Italy, Belgium.Spain dominating might be over .Having said that, Spain is topping Group B..9pts. Italy was seconds with 4pts . Belgium are a great side...Group E.. but each team there has 4 points with with Romania at the top on GD (goals for being the difference) It's been a good watch,so far.
