Anyone played this game on PS3? I know there are reviews on Amazon, but I wanted to get some experiences/opinions off here too. I got a PS3 320gb for Christmas today so am buying new games for it. I love what Skyrim is based around, RPG, scrolls, weapons, armour, little side quests etc...

So any opinions greatly appreciated.

Kind regards and a happy Christmas to you :D

Just started playing this today, chrissy present. Looks pretty good, though I'm not a massive fan of RPG games.

I'm only about an hour in and spent about half that time customising my character, you can change just about every facial feature, hairstyle and colour, male or female (if you want to)

So far I've been attacked by a dragon, a thief and a couple of wolves, pretty much like real life round here ;)
I think I've convinced my son though that anyone over 40 shouldn't be playing these games as we're to slow in mind and finger coordination apparently

I'll keep an eye on this thread for some tips.

I've been playing this on the PC (clocked up about 80 hours playtime since having it)

It is THE game of the year for me. There is just soooo much to do in this and the quality is really good in all the details.

+1 I've been playing it since it came out, it really is surprising just how big the game is, there is always something new to discover an do!

Definately a game worth giving a go

I love it

Yep been playing it on PC since it came out as I've played all the elder scrolls games and it is probably the best of the series (though i have a very big soft spot for morrowind)... Get it you wont be disappointed (though I have been lured away by SWTOR atm)

Just be aware that the game is rife with bugs. Two of my questlines are completely unfinishable due to game-breaking bugs that they've not bothered fixing.

Love the gameplay and the world but my god, the bugs seriously ruin the game.

My son played it non stop until he took an arrow to the knee :(

They've said quest bugs will be fixed in the new year as they wanted to focus on other issues first. (like the PS3 lag)

You should save often and on different slots so if you notice something odd you can revert to an earlier save.

200 plus hours on my main save (xbox 360) says this is the best game i've played in a long time.

Thankyou all - have now bought it following your recommendations and research into the bugs issue.

Thanks everyone!

I just hope the fixes will come soon. I've actually shelved the game out of rage after encountering the second bug, because it's too frustrating. It's particularly disheartening after spending so much time with it - I'm level 47, so I've really dedicated a lot of time to it, which makes the bugs that much harder to tolerate when they come along and ruin your questlines :<

I must admit though, that even though I've enjoyed it, I do think that it's a bit overrated. At the end of the day, the vast majority of quests involve nothing more than go-there-and-click-on-that-thing-and-kill-everyone-else. Sure, you're occasionally presented with moral choices, but a bit of puzzle solving would have been nice. I think the best thing about the game is actually the world of Skyrim itself - they really managed to give it a spontaneous, organic feel, so for me, the world is really the star of the show, and I do enjoy just exploring it.

Which quests are bugged for you?

Unless they're major story ones I really don't understand the rage. The world is more important than most of the quests after all.

People need to understand that with games as large and varied as the elder scrolls it's near impossible to eliminate all bugs pre release as they can be caused by almost any choice you make.. & there's an insane amount of choices to make.

My main game is 200 plus hours and I'm not even close to finished with it. The order I've played is unique and could have caused a number of unexpected events. A bug can only be fixed when they can replicate it.

Have you informed bethsoft of the issues you've had?

For reference I've got 2 bugged quests (1 of which I could've fixed myself if I'd noticed at the time as a quest item got driven under a rock during a fight so I can't pick it up) which I would like fixed but it's not a really big deal to me as there's so much else to do. ( & none of the quest rewards are as epic as the armour & weapons I've made for myself)

SPOILERS

My Thieves Guild quest is borked at the Trinity Restored stage, as Karliah is currently stuck like a dumb moron in the cellar of an inn in Winterhold, instead of being at the Nightingale stone. And my Liberation of Skyrim quest is stuck at the Battle of Solitude stage because the game won't recognise that I finished the previous, necessary quest, despite giving me the next one. Both of these have been reported countless times by people all over the web since shortly after the game came out. Small issues here and there are forgivable, but game-breaking stuff like this is totally unacceptable. I'm particularly ****ed about the Thieves Guild one, because it's my favourite part of the game.

I've even told two friends of mine who work at Bethesda, but nothing has been done. It's ridiculous. Testing a game is an absolutely essential part of game development, and while I appreciate the fact that Skyrim is huge and its gameplay style variation can lead to many unusual scenarios, it's nevertheless a duty of the developer to ensure that a game is not fundamentally broken when releasing it. Just googling "skyrim bug" gives you more results than you can cope with - even the popular game wikis on the net have a long list of bugs for each quest - this is completely unacceptable, and it's appalling that Bethesda are dragging their heels to fix the issues that people have been reporting since the game came out. It's not like they don't have the resources or budget to address them.

Googling any game + bugs will throw up a ridiculous amount of results. By no means does it also mean that a game is fundamentally broken.

With a game as large as skyrim, its to be expected that there are going to be more bugs than in some other games such as generic "follow this route, kill these people, get to here and you're done". As games become more and more complex, its inevitable that the chances of bugs getting through the testing net is going to increase and that it will become more and more difficult to fix them without affecting anything else.

Bugs may well get fixed in due time, but they have to be extra careful releasing patches so as not to cause more problems, or more bugs elsewhere, or they will get people complaining about them.

How can big game developers win?

Release a patch slowly to fix as many bugs as possible without repercussions, they get blamed for not caring and taking their sweet time. Or release hotfixes that can cause more problems and get blamed for doing a shoddy job.

Enjoy a game for what is it, with or without bugs, if you cant then you shouldnt be playing them.

Why are you defending them? It's as if you're trying to deny me the right to be angry that I bought a game that should clearly have stayed in testing for six months longer than it did. And no, googling any game will not necessarily throw up hundreds of thousands of results - I play a lot of games, one or two new games a month on average, sometimes more, and I've never, ever encountered a game as full of bugs as this. Ever. And I've been playing games since I got my first computer in 1985, so I've played a lot. Skyrim's bugs are nothing short of appalling.

If Bethesda wanted to go and make a huge game with a huge world and an open style of gameplay, then they should have also embarked on a suitably extensive testing campaign too. If I recall correctly, there wasn't even a public beta before release, a monumentally myopic move on Bethesda's part, especially considering their already notorious reputation for buggy releases. Fallout 3, anyone?

A game is fundamentally broken when thousands of players are unable to complete parts of it. How you can sit there and deny that is a complete mystery to me.

You clearly love the game. Fine. I love it too. But loving something shouldn't blind you to its inexcusable faults. And considering the sheer number of bugs this game has produced, it is is inexcusable.

You have obviously only read part of my post, so I wont get drawn into a debate when Ive been in a relatively good mood all evening.

Just a difference of opinions, have a good night

Bethesda port badly to PS3 - look at Oblivion and Fallout series. The game runs fine with no bugs more or less that PC/XBox but once the save file gets to big it introduces major lag whenever loading or saving (including autosaves when moving into a new cell)

As to bugs - get the PC version then you have the console/editor options available to bug fix things yourself, or other can - there's already hundreds of mods available at skyrimnexus.com

Given another 6 months to test the open ended, massively interactive style of the game prove almost useless to be honest - the only useful testing is the bug reports from players, yes it is annoying but all RPGs of note have had the same situation - if it is big enough to be fully immersive it is too big to exhaustively test

Stuff....

Ahhh, I now understand the rage. Those are very unfortunate issues.

The thing is I've (and many others) had none of those issues.

How many game testers should they hire? & how long should they test for? To fix a bug it needs to be found and it's inevitable that when your player base increases to millions new bugs & issues will be found that just never turned up in testing.

Not that it helps you now but most of these issues can be avoided by reverting to an older save and doing something slightly differently.

The one unforgivable fault IMO is the PS3 Lag due to the split ram. There's no way that should have been missed.

Just this morning I restarted my level 41 redguard as a result of a frozen loading screen and rage on my part leading to me having to reformat my hard drive and lose all saved data. Very annoying but pretty much my fault. I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy doing the same quests twice though! It's a cracking game I must say.

It's one of the buggiest messed up games, but at least it was caused by the ambition of the devs rather than their laziness.

I did read your whole post. You and I disagree on when the problems should be addressed - you say by releasing patches slowly, while I say the game shouldn't have been released without more testing, including an open beta.

I'm on XBox. Go over to this Skyrim wiki, and you'll find thousands of bugs on all three platforms :(

As I mentioned earlier, an open beta would have helped immensely. Game testing is a critical part of development, and all developers have testing teams whose job it is to essentially find ways to break the game. Like I said before, I appreciate the fact that Skyrim is huge, but if Bethesda wanted to do a huge, open game, then they should have put more time into testing it, because they should have realised it had the potential for loads of problems.

(though I have been lured away by SWTOR atm)

What do you think of it so far? I haven't played a MMORPG since I quit EQ four years ago (being in a bleeding edge raid guild gets too much like having a second full time job after a while), but am quite tempted by SWTOR.

Easily one of my top 3 games of all time.
You've just got to accept there will be glitches in a game this vast.

I found that, similarly to oblivion, you need to invest a bit of time in it before it plays at it's best. Once you've started to get decent stuff to deal out significant damage and a house to put excess stuff in (doesn't take long if you have good ways of making money), the game becomes a lot more fun to me. Now I can take out a dragon without too much trouble, wandering around is less daunting and more amusing.

Playing this now, love it and still only level 7!

I love how you have to visit the town before you can fast travel. Feels like your really trekking and discovering places. (Think I need to get out more)

There's a horse and cart at each towns stables you can hire to fast travel to new towns that you haven't yet discovered.

I do enjoy the trekking bit, but last time I walked all the way to an objective I got side tracked by two dragons along the way and it ended up taking 45 minutes.
