dear beloved TP members !

I've just sold my lovely Kiev 60 medium format film camera in 'bay after it's been there for just 7hours.
the buyer has positive feedback of around 300, no neg ones. buying lots of film stuff, even this month. looks like a good buyer,

but !! the problem comes from paypal (which is ebay owned I think)
-

"The money from your payments will be held temporarily for up to 21 days. After this time you'll be able to access the full amount and withdraw your money.
When will we release the payment?
You'll be able to access your money after 21 days, providing your buyer hasn't reported any problems. You may be able to access your money sooner if we can confirm that the item was delivered or, if this is an eBay item, your buyer leaves you positive feedback.
To help speed up the process, please ship this item as soon as possible and tell your buyer."

After this it looks like I won't use 'bay at all because of this. it's just too bad for sellers, the fees are too high + the risk.

What should I do - should I trust the new system and send the camera ?
Has anyone had experience with this new system. how long does it usually take to get the money in the paypal. it shows in my balance but with pending status.

regards,
D.

sounds like its a scam email - nothing to do paypal - soon as you confirm the delivery with tracking number, they know its left your possession and youve lost it all

stay clear, report it

The system of holding the funds has actually been around for over two years now. It's in place so that new sellers aren't fly by night merchants ready to b****r off with the money.

Assuming that the buyer is happy with the purchase you should be able to access the funds as soon as you have received positive feedback for the transaction.

Personally, I don't think the fees are too high and where else will you find the same exposure. There is a reason that ebay is the market leader.

Risk? What risk? Send via a trackable method like Special Delivery and not 1st class standard like you stated in the listing. Unless it weighs more than 2kg it will be £8.65 (on near).

It's not a scam or anythign to do with the buyer - Ebay has been doing this for a while now. Once the buyer has received the item and left positive feedback then you will get the money through pay pal.
It could be because you haven't sold a lot on Ebay or haven't sold anything for a while?

It happens on buy it now items, at least to me. I've never had it happen on an auction.

One of the reasons I tend not to use ebay.

Ive had a couple of scams like this - they send a fake email from paypal looking very very legit. Always seems to be on high value items (my 450D was the last to attract this)

just check and double check everyone so that its all above board - if it is then follow the advise from the people above and all should be well

It happens on what Ebay think are "high risk" items. I have sold an Xbox 360 and a 450D both had the funds held, I guess its due to people selling duff goods then running off with the cash. Its great if you get an honest buyer who won't abuse the system. The vast majority of Ebay users are honest and know the system.

Paypal has good customer service on the phone so give them a ring to set your mind at ease.

but as I've said - the money is showing in the account only with a pending status. and the email I recieved was from - service@paypal.co.uk and that is sort of the legit email .

should I still be worried ?

This happened to me when I bought a printer.

Once I left positive feedback for the seller all was well after that.

I had the same thing a while back when i sold something of high value (first time i had sold via ebay) as soon as they leave feedback you'll get your cash

o.k. thank you guys !

I'm thinking - should a drop an email about this to the buyer ?

you could contact Ebay dispute and see what they have to say

I'm just saying to check things 100% If its all legit then all is well.

Yes, the system of holding funds is normal.

I don't use Ebay much myself recently, due to their poor seller protection and willingness to always side with the buyer.

They held a number of payments made to me ranging from £2 to £10.
However, they did not put the £950 on hold when the iMac I had on there was sold at the same time!

Once you get +ve feedback it will be released within hours usually.

A polite note to the buyer, once delivery has been confirmed, would probably get the feedback sorted and the funds released.

Just as I do here I always leave feedback as soon as the buyer pays on Ebay.

I find only about 60% of people bother to leave it. And really..why should they? You don't go into Tesco and clap and cheer once you've bought your groceries.

I think the payment hold is pretty cheeky -especially as Ebay own Paypal and insist folks offer it. Must be raking up the interest on that..

Tis all seems very erratic. I don't think I have had any funds withheld awaiting positive feedback. I sold a collectable recently that made over £800 and I had the money available to me as soon as payment was made. Still not had feedback for that one!

Is there a possibility that buyer knows that the status is pending ? + could he have triggered that.
I have trust concerns in 'bay as the buyer can easily leave me neg feedback just because he thinks that the color is different in the picture.

No, as a buyer you have no idea a payment is being held.

I've had the same as you, just offer a £5 discount and ask them to pay by BT.

It's not a scam matey, had the same when i sold my old iMac, when you send the item, the seller can say they have it and your payment will be released earlier than the 21 days. It's a way of protecting the buyer as there have been problems, mainly due to sellers from China.

agree. it's 60% for me as well, maybe even lower. I've given away free rmsd etc and very cheap lenses, and even then I didn't get any + feedback .

ok. thanks guys ! I will try to talk to the buyer ! I only wish he was a TP member ! that would've been funny. Like it happened to Andy !

I used to get this with items I sold, it all went away after I had received 100 positive feedback ratings.

I looked at one of their points and yes, they mentioned that if your feedback is below 100 they might do that. but I have sold around 10 items that cost from 60-240 quid and never had a problem.

Pending just means that it is awaiting clearence, in this case clearence means +ve feedback or 21 days passing.

Don't worry about it.

It must have been me then, as everything I sold the payment was held

They obviously like you more

I got that very same email from paypal , funds will be released etc after 21days , but as soon as the buyer got the items and left pos feedback money was in my acc, but as for paypal fees and ebay fees they are a totall rip off , i wont use them again , plenty sites now offering free adds with pics .

:agree: . I'm not going to use them again. only for stuff that costs less than 10quid. it's just ridiculous. !

So what if the buyer never left feedback or send you poor or neturel feed back...would you still get your money ? I've now found that second hand camera shops are cheaper than ebay anyways.

yes. it's about 82 or so.

try contacting the buyer. Suggest you refund the paypal and get them to pay by BT.

Then put in a search for items costing 1p (with free post) finishing soonest and buy any old rubbish for 1p, ideally from Hong Kong, China etc. Pay for the item and get you positive feedback upto 100.

Not totally what feedback is supposed to be about ....................
