DSLR Boot Camp Thread: discussion and posting

Well my first magazine arrived today, AFTER the deadline for entries.
GUTTED and not happy, you pay for a subscription to something such as this and you want your mags to be on time so you can actually do the homework

You can't upload pictures after the closing date, it says its not taking anymore submissions. As i've just tried after a few days being ill and missed the deadline DOH!

That's ridiculous then, as it clearly states on their website frequently asked questions that they keep the gallery open for uploads, but that you just wont be eligible for the prize draw. I think thay need to make their minds up.

Hey call up, and explain your situation and they will send you another issue foc to say sorry!!

Yeah they sure do, no matter anyway. I wouldn't of won the prize but its still good to follow the course.

That one will be late too lol

Hmmmm, they aint filling me with confidence as I am still trying to place my sibscription order and it has still not been done since Tue!!

What is the subscription cost, and where do I go to sign up

Arndts Photography, Lucas, Texas.

TBH i'm not impressed either, received an email this morning to say my subscription is nearly due for renewal. No date of when it ends but as i've only received 1 issue so far it better not end just yet. I won't renew the subscription i shall just pick up from the store.

Received the same email

Have only received 2 issues, so I better get my other 4, else there will be trouble :suspect:

Count yourself lucky!

I got my FIRST issue, YESTERDAY! About a month after i subsribed and after the deadline for submissions and no sign of my second. :shake:

I just called and asked to speak to the complaints department to which they said they didn't have one

Reidy, if you've learned something from it and moved from full Auto and understood what you were doing and why, then your picture is NOT crap. When you are a beginner, compare your pictures to your previous ones not your peer group. They may be leaps and bounds ahead of you in terms of knowledge, understanding and experience and that's not a fair comparison. Bootcamp is about YOUR personal journey. Enjoy X

I know, but i am very harsh on myself at times.
Yes i have learnt alot already, so glad i stumbled across this thread, actually having it shown in basic format and then going off and doing it yourself i think is great for us newbies.

Maybe mine will get in the mag, this is how it shouldn't be :lol:

I just called and asked to speak to the complaints department to which they said they didn't have one

I emailed three times which got me no-where.

I rang them and she said it had been sent out two days prior, so should be there any day.... 7 days later and no mag.

I rang back turns out she lied and it had never been sent out, so she got one special sent for me from head office, arrived four days later on the 15th. TWO days AFTER the deadline for homework entries.

I'm FUMING!! If they don't sort it by Tue I am going to make a formal complaint to someone and cancel my order (not that I am even on the system).

Logged on TP yesterday for the first time since joining last october (when I got my 1st DSLR which sadly has been used as a point and shoot on auto ever since) having finally decided to find the time to learn how to use it. I found this thread and bought the magazine and signed up for the course. I know I've missed the deadline for the first months homework but have still given it ago and found it really helpful.
I've also joined the flickr group (beckyboy101)

I just called and asked to speak to the complaints department to which they said they didn't have one

that reminds of the royal mail complaints phone line, they always say we are dealing with other calls and then just cut you off lol. I have never yet managed to get through to their complaints department...........

Last years course fad a total farce. Ok it's free I know so can't really complain but....

Started off with the wrong email address being given out to enrol which resulted in people not getting the emails and course info.
There was no deadline for images which I think was a bad thing that they have fixed this year.
There were uploading issues and people gave up being unable to submit homework.
The critique was almost non existent.

Read last years posts on the flickr group.

In addition they did a follow on editing skills course that had the same start.
I started the flickr sister group to the dslr skills one to cover it.
The mag said that the editing software used would be elements. The first two videos where lightroom and cs5 and posted with dead links.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the course and take it for what it is FREE. The mag is well worth the subs price of a tenner, I think it's one of the best tutorial type out there.

My 2p

Guess what came in the post yesterday? A second copy of the first magazine!
So now I have two copies of the first mag, both arriving AFTER the deadline for submissions, and no sign yet of the second mag.
I'm fuming!

The May issue isn't yet due. According to their site it will be in the shops from the 20th April, so I guess it will be in the post Monday. Better watch out for the postman. . .

May be someone could post the homework for those having a problem... I know last months was.

Hello

Welcome to module 2 of the Digital SLR Skills Bootcamp - composition & focusing. This month's video sees us fighting the fog in North Yorkshire to show you how to use compositional devices effectively. Using compositional devices incorrectly is a common mistake for beginners, but one that's easily corrected.

Once again we have two learning videos to help you get more from your camera. Follow the links below to watch the videos.

Module 2 starts on page 35 in the May issue of Practical Photography, on sale from 20 April 2011.

PLEASE NOTE: The homework gallery for module 2 will not be open for uploads until Thursday 21 April.

If anyone was worried about deadlines i asked on the TP forum and this was the answer.

The galleries will be closed for a short period of time so we can pick images for the video critique and choose a winner of the Nikon training voucher. Once this has been completed the gallery will reopen for uploads, which we'll announce on the forum.

To pass the course you will only need to complete the final project at the end of the course. The monthly homework is so students can put new skills into practise, and potentially have their work critiqued. The monthly prizes will continue to be allocated randomly because this gives everyone the chance of winning, regardless of ability. Don't you think it would be unfair if only the best photographers had the chance of winning training vouchers on a course designed to help photographers at a range of ability levels? The final project will be judged on technical and creative merit like last year.

I hope this helps
James

Thanks.

Sent from my HTC Hero using TP Forums

Whoooo :)

Lets hope I finally sorted my subscription today toooo :)

btw can anyone get the video to work?

Received latest magazine today.

Seemingly I am now on the system and my magazine should be posted out today with a free gift within 7 days. Here's hoping... I would advise anyone having issues to call, as if I hadn't I would never had been put on the system!

My magazine arrived today too!

Landscapes.... hmmmm... not something I've ever done, will be different thats for sure!

It's here!! Was a little concerned. Last months was quite early so I thought it would be the same for this month.
I've also not really done landscapes. Taken a few pretty pics whilst out walking, though I feel this may require a bit more thought than that. There have been some stunning pics on here, such as those on 'your best landscape' thred. If only I could achieve something on par... hey ho

Pick up mag today.
Really looking forward to this one as I do alot a walking and take loads of landscape pics that always look like snapshots when I get home :shake:

It's just where to go, I've got the quantocks one way and exmoor the other or maybe Dunster Castle or perhaps the harbour or maybe the jurassic coastline or perhaps...........aaarrrggh

Oh well a good excuse to visit them all.

don't know what i'm going to do, I live in the middle of lots of houses, don't drive and don't have a tripod or live close to anywhere nice really :(

Haven't received my magazine yet... I am gathering the homework is landscape, but what exactly do you have to do??

Think I'm gonna need to get a tripod...!

Lots of stuff around me that I can go and photograph but no idea where to start. Things like leading lines are impossible to picture until you're out there looking at the potential shot. Will need to make sure and take time to do this one properly as it's not a 5 minute job. Interesting though!

Andy
