DSLR Boot Camp Thread: discussion and posting

Is there any way of removing my original entry as I feel I've done a better image now that I've practiced a bit.
Suppose that will learn me to not rush in too soon :)

Well I used a cream object a on grey background for my homework, and I really care that it's not 100% adherent to the guidelines. To me, this module is making you thing about exposing for subjects on contrasting backgrounds, taking plenty of test shots, then analysing what you end up with and how different affect the outcome. This the learning process.

I always thought that photography was about bend, shaping and breaking rules... and above all it should be fun. Some folk are taking this far too literally.

Can't you just delete it and then upload the new version?

Their rules won't allow it, you can only submit one image per assignment and that's it.
I may do the next one in two or three sessions, gives me time to look at what I would have submitted and improve on the mistakes I spot.

It's a learning curve :-)

Click on your photo then go to the 'actions' tag at the top left - you will find the 'delete' option at the bottom of the drop-down list.

EDIT: sorry - getting confused. This only works in Flickr, of course :bonk:.

In their own forum, people have asked about deleting and have been told no by the mod's so how can that be?

Oops, sorry, I hadn't seen that - in fact I hadn't even noticed their forum.

EDIT: maybe it's time I was put out to grass ... I had got in a complete muddle and was thinking of the Flickr group. I posted my assignment there yesterday but forgot all about uploading it it to the official Bootcamp site.

This months homework assignment just got more confusing !

Had another read of the original email that was sent with the links for the video & there's a section about reflectors & using desktop lamps to help with lighting your subject . Then it says " you'll find it useful / helpful for the homework assignment !

The instructions for the homework say " using natural light "

Contradiction there ??

Managed to find the time to do the homework over the weekend and I have uploaded my image, I felt that I learned a lot about the exposure compensation from messing around for an hour or so with the camera and a few objects and two pieces of card one black one white.

I took a lot of shots and picked my best ( in my opinion) to upload. I managed to watch the videos in reasonable speed too so my internet must be back to normal however the video wasn't all that relevant to the learning to me?

I have subscribed to a different offer but I wll need to buy the next mag as well...

Can u still sign up for this?

It says on the website that you still can. You can send your homework in later than the stated date for each module, but they advise you to try to keep up to date.

I should imagine though that you would need to purchase your magazine each month from the newsagent as otherwise you might have a delay in getting the issues in time for the 2nd part.

Do u have a link? Also is it expensive? I am interested as I have just got a Nikon D5000, but am not really sure how to use it

It is free but you need to buy the mags or read them in your lunch hour, you can subscribe for a good saving though.

You have until the 13th to post homework to keep on schedule so get down to WHSmith in the morning and get snapping.

There seems to have been a few issues with the first homework, emails and videos but I know I have learnt something from no 1. Still life is not easy.

Thanks, I have just signed up now and will pop to the supermarket on my dinner :)

What is the first homework?

What is the first homework?

Photography something against a white or black background, using exposure compensation to ensure that the background remains white or black and not grey.

You'll have to hurry, homework has to be submitted by tomorrow :gag:

If you read the FAQ on bootcamp http://www.photoanswers.co.uk/Bootcamp/FAQ/ you will see that it says that homework can be uploaded later but you just wont be in time for the prize for that month. So hurry by all means but don't get into a panic.

Just been to the supermarket and got myself a copy :)

I now need to find a white or black background hmmmmmm

What lens are you using for the photos? Tried taking some with my 35mm and 50mm at 1.8 but did not like any of the photos I took.

Trying to take a photo of 3 toy harmonic of different colours on a black background.

Should I use my 18-135 lens to get a picture as the harmonica are small or should the other lens be okay.

Thank you

I used my 50mm prime lens at f8, iso 100, used a tripod and got in as close as I could.

Reply to sep9001 - I would try your 18-135, but you'll also likely need to use an aperture greater than 1.8 to get sufficient depth of field. I had to use F16 with mine to get suitable depth of field.

Finally got around to uploading a photo for the homework module :D

Thank you will give another tomorrow.

Still not got my first magazine!! Despite three emails and a phone call to the company!

Phew just uploaded mine :)

I uploaded it at about 12:05, will I still be ok for the draw??

Could you put me on the doing list please.
Uploaded mine a day or two ago, easily recognisable as it's the crap one stick between the good ones 
It's called sweet success and is the one with a load of chewy sweets on a black cloth.
Good thing is, since doing it, understanding aperture settings and exposure makes so much sense, only 2 weeks ago I just used the auto settings

Reidy, if you've learned something from it and moved from full Auto and understood what you were doing and why, then your picture is NOT crap. When you are a beginner, compare your pictures to your previous ones not your peer group. They may be leaps and bounds ahead of you in terms of knowledge, understanding and experience and that's not a fair comparison. Bootcamp is about YOUR personal journey. Enjoy X

Yeah I think the main thing is that we have learnt something, my pic isn't the best, but I like him and it's better than what I used to take... I still can't understand apperature, but at least I understand exposure now :)

I agree Vikki. When I first started I kept every photo I took. Now when I look back at them I feel really pleased with my progress.

I think they offer critique on some. But that said, I've never been able to find it. Perhaps they choose a couple to critique and do so in the magazine?

Wow my pic could be famous

You can't upload pictures after the closing date, it says its not taking anymore submissions. As i've just tried after a few days being ill and missed the deadline DOH!
