weekly Drodd's Photo52 for 2011 - Week 51, 52 and bonus: Light, Glass, Nature (post 1545)

What a great and original idea for week 5 Dawn. Well done!

great idea Dawn! Works really well and I like the way you have done something a bit different from the norm (just the way I like it!!)

I really like how the images fit together in a topical point of view, but colourwise they dont really seem to fit...my mind screams "I want something red!!" in the centre image (if that makes sense).

Plus....and this is just me and really is not meant to offend...but the xray just reminds me of Jackass The Movie. If no one reading this has seen it, just ignore my comment, you don't need to know....

 great stuff Dawn :) look forward to next week!

Hiya Paul,

Thanks for your comments and feedback, much appreciated.

I know what you mean about the images fitting together as a topic, and I too would have like to have added some colour. Infact I actually made some ice cubes with coloured water (i.e., water+cordial), and took some pics of those, but didn't think it worked as well as the plain water. Perhaps if I add that image rather, it may work - I will have a look. Otherwise, no red marbles, and when I applied a colour to the x-ray, it didn't look right either.

I've not seen the movie you mentioned, so not sure how it relates. Maybe I should google it to find out :D

Now I am eagerly waiting for the next theme ;)

Cheers

Dawn :)

Dawn, I like the creativity if your week 5 and I love the story behind the lightbulb pic however I don't think it works with the other two images.
I wish I had your creativity...I don't know how you think these up but they are brilliant!

Hiya Cris,

Thanks for the comments and compliments. My brother will never live this story down, I was actually with him when he swallowed the lightbulb. He must have been about 6 or 7 years old when it happened, he was sucking on the glass bit and I told him to stop doing that because he might swallow it and the next thing ..... whooooops and it was gone. Fortunately it came out in one piece, slightly corroded by the stomach acid though :D

Indeed it wouldn't naturally work with the image, but in this case I thought it might .... as I was thinking along the lines of swallowing the hard objects either side of the x-ray. They all have a common thread too, i.e., hard objects, glass-like, smooth contours, translucent (to a degree) etc.

As for the creativity, I believe it is something one can develop, besideds, I think you have creativity with your own images, from what I have seen.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks for the comments and compliment, much appreciated.

Hiya Dawn, a cracking image set there, I quite like it in colour, but I must say I do like the black and white conversion on your flickr, also I think the photograph of the Ice Cubes on its own is great. Very well done indeed.

Hiya Dawn!

Just saw your entry for this week theme! I like the story and creativity you have shown again! My critique is only towards the last picture. Compared with the other two it is too colorful and appears a bit lighter than the other two. I mean the first two have this dim lighting effect on them, whilst the last is clearer. I am not sure if you will understand what I mean! :(

Anyway, love the idea and I am happy to hear that you didn't struggle for inspiration.

Rayna

Again with the striking creativity, good work!

Prefer the black and white version personally, removes the dominance from the last image and makes the triptych come together for me :).

Hiya Rayna,

Thanks for the feedback and comments. I can see what you mean about the third image being more colourful. Tis was a hard task trying to balance the images, and at the late hour of putting the image together, my eyes were starting to go wonky  I know what you mean though.

I think this is a subject I will put into a better perspective for an image, but for this theme I wanted to include the x-ray pic as I thought it was quite apt.

However, I do have a collection of images that would make for an interesting pic for this theme.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hiya Callum,

Thanks for your compliments and comments.

I was a bit unsure about the b&w version, but after taking all other comments I suppose the b&w option is the answer to the colour combination issues.

Thanks

Dawn :)

Well, you're done a stunner there.

I suspect very few people would have thought about cheating and sneaking three into one...:D

#2, made me cringe!

Cheers.

Hiya Dawn,
Great works and still time left to relax before the next theme (apart from of course your 365 and the contributions you make on here- so no time really). This is a really novel idea and the triptych really works with these images. I appreciate you and others have felt the x-ray needed colour but thats not really the case in my opinion. Its an x-ray- they are monochrome- its part of your hard to swallow set, so, by definition it fits and works and if anything provides contrast.
I looked at the larger clearer components of this on your flickr which gave me a greater appreciation of the triptych when I returned, as the smaller format on here does not show the greater detail. I like the strict rows of the marbles and the colours too were better appreciated after seeing them larger.

Really nice set Dawn:clap:

(btw which part did you have in mind that related to my zip shot, was it Hard Balls or the whole Hard to Swallow, lol)

Martin :)

Hiya Andy,

Thanks for the compliment.

As for the cheating..... moi? NEVER! I like to think of it as a touch of creative ingenuity :D

Indeed, #2 makes me cringe too, especially as I was there when it happened, I couldn't believe it, and it was touch and go through the whole digestive process to make sure that it came out in one piece, failing which would have resulted in some major surgical procedure, but thankfully that wasn't required. Bearing in mind I am 12 years older than my youngest brother, I felt a sense of responsibilty, so when the pooop finally appear with the bulb, I was so relieved (for want of a better word):lol:

My brother has had a good laugh at the fact that I have used this image for the theme (and I thank him for his consent to use this said image too).

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hiya Dawn,

I think all could stand alone, so I'll "crit" them individually;

Marbles (are they mine at all? probably not but I seem to have lost mine a while ago)
You've got the good, glassy texture but for me all the reflections are a bit distracting, I find it hard to look at any area without then looking at the reflections. Just had a look at the exif and you were shooting at iso800 stopped down to f36. With a shot like that it might have been better to open up a bit and go for a long exposure and a tripod in a room with very subdued lighting. For iso800 though its looks very clean and the focus is spot on.

X-Ray
Looks a bit overexposed to me........................ (sorry :coat: )
As an image between the other two, a very good choice and a great story. If you had given him some lemon juice to drink it might have actually lit up as well.

Ice
Out of all 3 this is my favourite, I really like the refraction within the ice and the surface detail with the cracks etc and the purpley-turquise underneath really gives a good highlight and atmosphere. Did you know that if you flicker a flame at ice it goes uber clear like a crystal? I don't think it was needed for this shot but if you ever do it again just something to try.

Looking forward to next week. Going well Dawn

Hiya Martin,

Was wondering when you would notice my new post, especially as you seemed so eager to see same.

Thank you for your comments, although not sure about 'relax' what is that .... some reference to Frankie Goes To Hollywood

I like the way you see the x-ray pic ..... hence why I didn't want to play about with the colour. Indeed, an x-ray is monochrome and that is the way I wanted to leave it, and why I put it in the middle with the ice and marbles on either side.

You have made my day in understanding the reason why I chose the composition and positioning.

The reason I mentioned about the individual images, is because I thought that the detail was lost in the triptych, so thank you for taking the time to look at the individual images to get the full picture. It is a pity that we are limited re image size, otherwise I could have posted a full blown image to give all the detail.

I'm also impressed that you noticed the strict rows of marbles .... something that nobody has commented on yet ... and something that I paid careful attention to when composing and taking the image, so thank you, my effort has paid off ;)

To answer your latter question ...... Your 'zip' photo was quite inspirational to the motivation for this theme ..... i.e., all three images have a correlation, to spell it out in user-friendly terms:

Hard Water (ice) :naughty:
Hard to Believe (fits the jeans) ;)
Hard Balls .... welll ...... another :naughty: (hopefully a result from the first )

Hey, I have posted this after the watershed, so hopefully won't get reprimanded for same :D Afterall this is my Photo52, my learning experience, and I should be able to express same :p

You are all making this so much fun, and I appreciate all comments and feedback.

Big cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Dawn,
I like your logic :naughty: and it is nice to know that one of my images was inspirational. ;)

Martin

Good  so hopefully I will see more of your inspirational images? I need them to keep me going :p

D ;)

Hi Dawn

yet another stunning image....oh to have half your creativity & ability .
3 great ideas on the theme ,the x-ray works well as it is & love the colors in the marbles  Not seen the full B&W set but imagine it may work as well if not better .
You certainly set a high target in this challenge . Your shots are very inspirational & I look forward each week to seeing what you've come up with

ps : I've just put a query up regarding "how to do" a tryptic & then I spotted your latest shot:bang: It's something I really want to try for a particular shot but have no idea how to create it

Hiya Caleb,

Wow! Thank you so much for your comments and taking the time to critique the individual images.

You ask if the marbles are yours, well .... at the end of this 52 I think they may represent all of us who are taking part, mine included  You mention about the reflections ... but actually when I was composing the image that was the one thing that stood out the most for me, i.e., it is a very busy image with all the colours so thought the light reflections would draw the attention to the eye, perhaps it hasn't worked as I intended it to. Glad you looked at the Exif, indeed I used a high ISO as I was trying to create as much detail as possible, marbles can be quite a soft and boring subject as far as detail and contour are concerned. You are right though about the fx, but then I shot these on A-Dep mode and even though the focus seemed to be spot on, perhaps the other settings weren't quite right. I am still trying to figure out how to adjust other settings in this mode and it seems a bit 'hit and miss' at times. Although I did try a few in manual mode too. Another reason I went for the higher ISO was because I was shooting in poor lighing from above, but then was also playing with my alternative lighting, i.e., 20W halogen lamps, x2, one on either side from various positions, below, above and from the side. So a very experimental shot.

X-Ray: I can see what you mean about the +OE, but then again I was working with a 20+ year old x-ray with all the age signs associated with such a film. This was quite a toughy, as the lightbulb is already over-exposed on the image .... perhaps because it was a brand new lightbulb at the time (one my mum & dad were supposed to install to replace the old one .... so now wonder it was looking so shiny and new ) As for the lemon juice, I think we are a few years too far gone now for that one  (but I appreciate the idea).

Ice: I have to agree, I really like this one too. It was Reuben's birthday on Monday, and one of his presents was wrapped in this really groovy, sparkley paper and I thought, yes! I will keep that for a background and it paid off. So the colours you see are actually the reflections from the wrapping paper. Thanks for the tip about the flame, I didn't know that and will defo apply that on my next experiment. You see we all learn something from each other .....OMG I am learning so much from this 52 and thanks to you and all I have already made a note of all the tips and tricks. I have tried to share a few too, but some of these that I get are brilliant!!!

Cheers guys and gals for making this so much fun and a true learning experience for me.

Luvs you all

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hiya Lynne,

Thank you so much for your encouraging words. Believe me creativity is not a gift, but rather a talent that one can nurture and develop if you open your mind to it. I have seen such progress in your images that you have produced for your project, so you are on the right track

I take each theme as a new challenge and learning experience, and just let my mind play with that ... one of the most amazing experience. The thing is not to push it, but rather just let if flow ....... the mind is one of the most amazing things, let it free and it will surprise you :)

Cheers

Dawn :)

P.S. about the triptych, I use Picnik to do the triptych as it has templates that one can use to arrange the images. But I think other softwar may have a similar option/formatting. Hope that helps.

blimey, just had to read back over a few weeks to catch up

Creativity is both a gift and talent, some have it naturally, some have to practice, which ever way, you certainly have it dawn.

I appreciate how difficult the project is, I wouldn't keep up

kudos for keeping up with it so far, brilliant photo's so far and week 5 is no exception, well done

Hiya Emily,

Thanks for popping by to catch up on my progress, and your comments and compliments are very much appreciated and encouraging :)

Now I have my work cut out for tonight, as I have my 365 photos to catch up on, i.e., process and upload.

Cheers

Hi Dawn,
Another good take on the weekly topic. Looking at the larger pictures on your Flickr page you get a better appreciation to the work you have undertaken and especially the colours in the images.

Like others i like the marbles picture on its own but in the smaller triptych it looks a little too colourful because the ice has lost some of it's colour in the conversion versionto this size triptych.

For this file size i think i would go with the b&w version of the tryptich.

Keep up with all your hard work, i for one look forward to your contributions to the weekly 52 project
Best Wishes

Hiya Ceri,

Thank you for you kind words and comments. I agree about the images looking better as individuals, and am happy that you can appreciate same.

I agree about the colours in the triptych, perhaps something I have to practice more. I have loads of images that I want to use a similar style for. Agree about the b&w the better option for this one.

I will keep up the hard work as I want to make a success of this Photo52 and am enjoying every moment creating the images and supporting other 52'ers.

Hope I can keep impressing you with the images.

Look forward to seeing your weekly photos too.

Cheers

Hi Dawn, another unusual and imaginative take on the theme - you have a very creative imagination.

Individually they are all great images which have a lot of interest, but for me they don't go well together. The marbles pic especially seems to jar a bit with the other two.

The ice shot is very appealing and I would love to see that on it's own. Just looked at it on your flickr and I think it's a very beautiful image on it's own. In fact it's one of my favourites this week.

I love the story about your brother - I assume he suffered no lasting harm.

Cheers, Patrick

PS for the triptychs - would a narrower border work better?

Hiya Dawn,
How old was your brother? about 7/8??
Love that combi.
How did you photograph the Radiograph (technical term for 'an x-ray' - x-ray is just the radiation used, so ner)
Nice and straight x-ray good positioning, got the symph on, no marker and hips seem to be too out-turned, but other then that, the radiographer should be pleased!

Bang on exposure too, especially being as this was about 20 years ago with real film, and no AEC (Kind of auto setting)
Was this all that was on the radiograph, or was there more abdo?

I've never seen glass come across so clearly as the lightbulb glass on that shot...

(really sorry, taking them things is my job!!!)

rest of the shots, I also really like...
:))

Hiya Patrick,

Thank you for your compliments and comments. I had fun with this one .... even though I would not have normally put all the images together as an image from a professional point of view, but for the fun on this project I had to do so.

Hence why I created them as individual images, and mentioned same in my OP as they are all one on their own.

Thanks for your comments about the 'ice' pic, indeed that is the one I like the most too (from this project).

Fortunately my brother suffered no lasting harm, the bulb came out in one piece, although worse for wear . The only thing he has to contend with now is te embarrasement, especially as through this project it has all come to life again. :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hiya Dan,

I have just checked the date on the x-rays, 31-10-1985 (so as he is 30 this year, that would put him at 4/5 years old when this happened)

OMG these film prints are well preserved..... with minimum fading. The way I photographed them was ...... thread some string to the room dividers I have as background drops (cool things for pinning other colours etc to them), then used clothes pegs to attach the x-rays. Using halogen table lamps I then positioned the lighting accordingly, kind of creating a 'light box' effect.

I must say I was quite impressed with the level of the print as I didn't have to do much straightening .... although there was a number '2' in the very region which I had to clone out (although I was going to leave it in for a joke but wasn't sure if everyone would get that )

As for the hips being too out-turned, I think that may be condusive to the age he was at the time (hence what prompted me to check the date on the film).

In South Africa, which some consider a 3rd world contry, (where this x-ray was taken) they don't waste time and they have some of the best technology and equipment (even back then in the 80's). Over there you don't have to wait weeks for a test or x-ray (it is done on the same day), which makes me wonder about the system here (and sadly I work for same institution  ).

Regards the expo, thanks I tried to capture the truest repro of the x-ray, and what you see is pretty much the same as the original, bar from the crop to the focal point. So yes the x-ray was more than the abdo, infact it extended right up to the chin and is such a cool image, as one can see all the ribs etc. BTW I even cloned out some of the 'garbage in the stomach area'

This was quite a challenge but I thoroughly enjoyed putting it together.

Cheers

Dawn :)

just re-read the post and spent more of the time critiquing the 20ys old x-ray then your shots!!!

sorry...
in my defence, i had just recently come home from work spending all day taking that kind of thing!!!!
love the ice shot...

Hi Dawn

Can't really add much more than has already been said - a different approach to what many have found to be a difficult theme, but finding a different angle and producing a stunning image is what I am beginning to expect of you - keep up the good work, I look forward to your next one.

Hiya Dan,

No probs, I have just replied to your post (before reading this).

I think seeing the x-ray of the glass is a very unique thing, not many will see same as I don't think it is an every day occurance that someone swallows a lightbulb

Although having worked in MIU myself, it don't surprise me the things some people present with. :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

we'd never get away with taking an x-ray of the whole patient like that nowadays...
can't believe i was so far out on the age of him, though!
I really do like the ideas of three in one images, may have to try one myself...
can't wait to seeing your clutter!

(perhaps you could just post the same image without the... bowel contents cropped out!!!!)

and I have to say, your hand made light box is probably better then some of the ones we still have cluttering the hospital nowadays!

and speaking as a radiographer, you don't want to know the kinds of things we see...

(have in the past placed a bet with one of the SAU nurses about what coin a patient swallowed (and won, it was a £2.00 coin, and the two metals were just about distinguishable!!))

Thank you, your compliments and comments are much appreciated.

Now I wait in anticipation for the next theme.

Hi Dawn

I love the idea of the triptych and must commend whoever is responsible for keeping the x-ray

I love the ice shot! I also love the skill of the marble shot. I think all three are hard shots so...guess you got the theme ;)

Hiya Tina,

Thanks for your feedback. I will pass you commends onto my mum, as she is the one who has kept all our records in such prestine condition. When I turned 18, she presented me with a folder of all my vital info (birth cert, immigration cert, innoculation record etc, etc) and she has done the same for all 4 kids, so a fab mum she is! Love her to bits

I'm glad you likey the ice shot, as I am pretty impressed with that one too. As too the marble shot (actually I had to do a retake on that one because a hair got in the way messing the whole thing up - the bains of having long hair)

Now I can't wait to find out what the next theme is going to be.

Cheers

Dawn :)

It's already been announced as 'Clutter'

Hiya Dan,

After reading all your replies, I thought you might appreciate this unedited version of the x-ray:

5419641282_4cd312bb6a_b.jpg

Don't worry about being out with the age, after all you were looking at a cropped version and going on my guestimate of the age at the time.

If you wish to share same image with your colleagues I am sure my bro wouldn't have a prob with that, considering it happened so many years ago.

Cheers

Dawn :)

P.S. my son swolled a 5p 3 years ago, and they told me that there was no point in taking an x-ray as it wouldn't show up. Which leaves me thinking ...... if one can see a lightbulb, surely one can see a 5p.

Last edited:
ahh, that's an abdo:D

had a vision of an x-ray of... all of him!

I really like that film, better then I can find in our archives (I deal with careers fairs, high school visits, etc so have searched them throughout!)

and trust me, a 5p will show on an x-ray.

It has photographed very well. Looking at that image it has certainly kept well. Amazing what kids swallow, thankfully my daughter has not done anything like that. (hope I haven't spoke to soon there!)

Hiya Michael,

Thanks, yes I am quite surprised at how it has photographed too. My mum seemed a bit reluctant at first to let me have the x-rays, but she obviously has some confidence in my photography ability  and loaned me the x-rays. The good thing now is that they are now 'digital' images, so she doesn't have to worry about them fading (although the originals seem to be quite well preserved).

Indeed, it is amazing what kids can swallow, as I have already mentioned my son (who is now 6) gobbled a 5p a few years ago, although it seems he has learned his lesson well now :D

Cheers

Dawn :)
