Hi,
Please can someone give me instructions on the best way to reduce an image to a size acceptable to the critique forums?

Save at 72ppi (pixels per inch) and then 800pixels on the long edge, make constrain proportions is checked, save at quality 9 or 10, more than enough for forums.

As above, this will be sufficient to avoid being caught by the pixel police!

if your saving the image in the TP gallery, that also have a image size restriction

You may include images / photos in your posts.

To respect people that still access the internet via dial up or that are running small screen resolutions, images displayed in posts should be no larger than 800 pixels along their longest side, and if hosted by us in our free gallery, also have a maximum filesize of 200kb. There is no file size restriction on images hosted offsite, although we urge users to be sensible, we reserve the right to break links to images we feel may take too long to download.
Panoramic images are permitted up to a maximum of 1024 pixels along the longest edge. We consider an image panoramic if it contains 2 or more shots stitched together, and has a 2:1 size ratio or higher. This means that if an image is 1024 pixels long, then it must be maximum 512 pixels high.

What software do you have access to? We can then advise how to make the image smaller in the best way for you (steps)

Do a search on google for microsoft powertoys for windows and download the program image resizer. this gives an ideal option of 800x600 amongst others.

once downloaded and installed you just right click on the file to downsize, and select image resize then choose 800x600 and save as another file.

I use fotosizer, small and very easy to use. Freeware so costs nothing and resizes to the size you want maintaining the correct aspect ratio :)

800x600 is great for 4/3rds and compacts but many DSLRs use a different aspect ratio (3:2) so 800x600 will either compress the picture or cause it to be cropped.

gazedd asked a very good question about what software the OP's using, it's all very well us offering advice based on what we use but if he/she's using something else, it could be a completely different process.

Saving at 72ppi will not make a difference (unless you are resampling), it is only relevant when printing.

72PPI is irrelevant for web, it's only for printing. Reduce size to 800 pixels on the longest edge and if you are using TP to host then compress until the file is just below 200k.

Thanks for all the responses.
I have Photoshop CS2 and had a play with resizing by messing about with image size etc.
I was wondering if there was a particular way to go about it to get the best results.
I will also have a look at the other suggested software.
I know that Photoshop does way more than I am ever likely to use and am worried that resizing in PS may be a lot harder than the other suggested tools.
Therefore instruction on how to use PS would be much appreciated, maybe I am imagining that it is harder that it really is.

In PS I always go Image>Image Size and just make sure everything is ticked, seems to work...

As you have PS2 you could use the script writer scripts that I wrote for Talk Photography users. They will add borders (if you want them) but also automate re-sizing to 800px (or any size) but also there is an option to reduce the quality UNTIL it fits into a size specified by you so you can use this for resizing down to 200Kb in order to fit the TP limits. If you are hosting the pics yourself though then the 200Kb limit does not apply.

Excellent!
I will definitely have a try of your script cowasaki.
If it's as good as it looks I certainly think it's fair to send you some cash.
